Anyone who grew up in the 80's know what children's book this is?

It's possible the book came from the 70's, too, our library had lots of old stuff. But basically it was an alphabet book about an explorer/professor/adventurer looking for a certain type of animal whose name began with the letter "Z". From what I remember, the explorer was an older man with a white beard and he dressed in sort of "safari-ish" clothing. The gist of the book is the explorer going around the world looking for this one animal and on every page he encounters a fantastic monster whose name begins with a different letter of the alphabet. At the end of the book, the explorer gives up and goes back to his home, where he falls asleep in his library. And while he's sleeping a bunch of the creatures he'd been looking for come out and start frolicking about, because it turns out they've been living there all along.
