I thought the pepsi was a nice touch, even if it was in plain sight. I imagine a few more was hidden in his new round decorative papier-mâché head.

Personally I don't care about any reviews from the PA guys anymore. Penny Arcade is just too big. They make too much money, have too many employees, and have conventions on two continents. It's nothing personal, it's just that when a business reaches a certain size they are no longer your friends. Just because they wear t-shirts to work and play ping pong doesn't mean they aren't part of the corporate machine. I think Jerry and Mike want it both ways. They want to be "those two guys making something in their garage" but they also want all the money and luxuries that come with being a large business. It doesn't work that way, it's one or the other. Do I think Microsoft paid Mike for a positive review? Not really. Can I be 100% sure? Not of someone who owns a company that big. It's the same thing with Penny Arcade Presents. If Nintendo pays Mike and Jerry to write a comic for the new Mario game, will they pretend to like it a little bit more than they do in the hopes of getting a second check when the next Mario game comes out? Maybe they would. I can't be sure. And the thing is, would it even be morally wrong to lie to us? If Mike pretending to like something more than he does, means more money for his children, wouldn't lying to us be the morally RIGHT thing to do?

Personally, I do care about Penny Arcade, since a staggering amount of their revenue is spent on charity and fan-service.

Considering that their total full-time staff numbers less than 100 people, they are pretty much still a small company; they just have better behind-the-scenes support than Grandma Lula's Online Fruit Preserve Emporium and Gingham Skirt Extravaganza.

His money comes from people believing he's genuine. He would be foolish to jeopardize that. He's not foolish.

I had the pleasure of playing around with a surface pro around at work. I really think Microsoft has something, this time around. The windows 8 os and the available technology actually makes it a feasible to have a "desktop os" experience on a tablet. I don't think Mike was out of line with the review. He called it like he saw it and sometimes there are just good products out there.

I stopped listening to the PA guys on reviews years ago, long before they were Machiavellian Corporate Overlords (TM), simply because I realized they have terrible taste in games. :P

Also, remember when they tried to back that one Steam-like digital distribution system? Sold me on some game they loved there that was just an awful waste of money.

What is this I don't even.

You can improve that 37x figure rather dramatically by staying sober, actually having a motorcycle license, and not riding like a retard.

DUI in particular is far more common among motorcycle riders than car drivers, which skews the statistics a bit.

I love Gabe the character. Well, Mike's also pretty rad.

"What if those people meant nothing to me?" gave me a good laugh on this abysmal Monday morning. Erika's pepsi can is a nice touch too, shoulda been tapped to the back of the laptop or something, though.

Mike makes some pretty good points on twitter about that surface thing. He keeps posting about all this cool shit he can do on his surface, but none of that is conveyed in the commercials. It's all just people pop lockin' to dubstep(albeit awesomely) or a bunch of buisness people having a synchronized Wub Wub buisness meeting and sliding their tablets all over the place.

I guess it's easy to be rich when you don't have to pay for anything.

Having said that, I've been more than a little envious of the free crap they get to shill review.

That's pretty representative of the kinds of board meetings where I'd want to use a pro, though.

I understand the general desire to root for the underdog and to stick it to the man, as kids say these days, but that doesn't absolve you of the responsibility to apply simple logic to a situation before making accusations.
Do I think Microsoft paid Mike for a positive review? Not really. Can I be 100% sure? Not of someone who owns a company that big.

Well, Mike has said multiple times about this specific incident that Microsoft hasn't paid him for a positive review. So you have to ask yourself how much Mike would lose in future revenue / "street cred" if it came out that he lied about that. Then compare that to how much you don't really think they paid him. Then ask yourself if the risk would be worth the short term reward for him.

So, a couple of things :

    1. Mike is not in any danger of not being about to support his children. Even if the PA Megacorp went belly-up tomorrow, he and his children will be able to live in the manner to which they are accustomed for many many years.

    2. I don't think Mike and Jerry would give a falsely positive review for something in the hopes of getting future business. It would have the possibility of backfiring hugely on their credibility, and there's no guarantee it would even make a difference in getting new work. By now companies have a pretty good idea of what they're getting (and not getting) when they hire PA for a project.

That all being said, though, there's no reason to pay attention to their reviews of games / hardware. I haven't really put much stock in them myself for some time. My tastes differ from theirs in a few significant ways, but it's still interesting to read their opinions and compare them to my own. It's rare that I can't see where they're coming from on a product, which puts them miles ahead of some of the "reviewers" out there that I read. I just don't always agree. Usually it's worth a quick google of an unfamiliar product they mention to see if it's something I should check out, but oftentimes it isn't, and that's fine. I come here for the comic, after all. Anything else is gravy.

What I want to know is, if the falling down the stairs becaus eof a text thing is true. That is hilarious.

I was carrying two big heavy cases of paper down two flights of stairs once. Each set of stairs had the same number of steps. On each flight I fell after reaching the third from the bottom step... I don't know why. Probably because I couldn't see the steps. After the second fall, I just had to sit there and laugh for a good five minutes.

It probably depends on the policy, but yeah, it totally could

I liked the comic, but as the resident life insurance agent with a major national company can I say that I have never once seen a life insurance policy that had any clauses about motorcyle riding in any way. In fact, on my life insurance application I never ask anything about motorcycles for personal use. The only question that references motorcycles at all is the one that asks "In the last 3 years, have you engaged in any avocations such as mountain/rock climbing, vehicle racing, scuba/skin diving, sky diving, ballooning or hang gliding; or is such activity planned in the next 6 months?" but in this case it does include any kind of vehicle racing AND answering yes to this question does not necessarily preclude you from getting a policy either but may impact your ability to get preferred rates. Also, once you have the policy, any avocations you begin have no bearing on your current policy, only on future policies.
