As a fan, I'm the only person allowed to dictate how a series is made, especially a series that that was dead and never would have had another game made!

So I googled "Thief Reviews" and got excited because the reviews in the first metacritic results that were visible from google's results looked good... :'(

So, Thief pre-load is up (got my code from GMG this morning). The preload is 20fuckingGB. Good lord.

Well, can't fit that on my SSD and pre-load still only goes onto your C drive so I guess I'm loading late.

Could just uninstall BF4 though, probably should really.

You had me worried for a second, as my C drive is my SSD and I didn't want all that preload writing going on there. But I just checked, and it's definitely being written to my Steam drive which is G. A file in a folder within the Steam folder called depotcache.

  • Albino BunnyAlbino Bunny Jackie Registered User regular
Probably just goes into wherever you have Steam installed. Which is C drive for most people.

Most people probably don't have 7 available disk partitions, so yes.

Well it's a game featured on next-gen consoles as well, so I'm not too surprised by this. And I imagine it's capable of looking even prettier than what my Xbox One will make it look like.

Just to clarify I actually agree that the combat they've added to Thief seems out of character for a game about stealing. I just also get tired of the argument straying from 'here's why it doesn't work' to 'This game is my precious baby how dare people want something different from it to me'. It's just silly and not conductive to any discussion other than some massive circle jerk between people who own the originals.
Does it really need to be explained?

Were you mad that DICE didn't bother to release a doctoral dissertation about why Faith is so bad at kung fu when she is clearly Asian?

Fuck guys. You think we're entitled? You're already on your high horse, so ride the fuck off.

In other news, some of the stuff I'm reading online has me worried. I'm going to be waiting for some official reviews and/or hands on impressions from the PA folks before I plop down a $60 on this.

~33 bucks for this on GMG is a steal. Bought.

I loved the original Thief, but thankfully I don't live my life in a nostalgia haze and am open to new games and ideas. Even if I did, just because I enjoyed the original games does not give me the right to tell anyone how Thief should be or what people deserve to get.

Despite being personally against what this new Thief seems to be (still quite open to being wrong about it, will happily eat crow without complaint if I am) I am 100% in support of this stance. Personally, I'm not looking to enforce my values on other people. I just likes what I likes and one of those things is a good argument. Most of the people on the PA forums are smart people in my experience and I enjoy being challenged by people capable of doing so.

Like, for example, I bought Dishonored last night after all the fighting I did over it on this thread a few months back and all it took to find the game enjoyable was to change up my playstyle a little. Game's not Thief and trying to play it like it was hurt the experience. Still not my favorite game (characters and dialog are dreadful!) It's a fairly good game despite that, I must say.

For me, Thief falls far enough into the 'troubled development' zone that reviews are necessary.

A shame, as I'd sorely love a new Thief game, but money is tight enough at the moment that I can't afford to drop cash on a stinker.

There is such an absurd disconnect from those arguing they are the ones defending creative freedom and new ideas, in the defense of a game that literally attempts to make itself more streamlined, action based and like other games. Seriously you cannot keep arguing you want new games and ideas, while then claiming Thief shouldn't have stayed a unique different game with specific style/mechanics to it instead of being turned into Dishonored lite. It's a complete and absolute logical contradiction. I cannot see how you can claim with a straight face you are into new games and ideas, when this game is largely abandoning the elements that made Thief unique and makes itself more like other games that followed it.

You are defending exactly the opposite: You are defending everything being the same action orientated experience or it might as well not be made. That's not being open to new games or ideas, that's saying the only games people should make are the exact same things. Bear in mind that the way the game has ended up has only done so due to fans comments about how absurd things are like exp for headshots, being able to turn focus off (and in fact, many of the difficulty options that I am excited about were due to old fans giving feedback) and things like the QTEs disappearing from the gameplay.

Because given the development history, I wouldn't be surprised there was a very different feel to this game a year ago than what we have now.

Edit: And Dishonored is one of my favourite games of all time. I am not using comparisons to Dishonored as any kind of insult or slight against the game or how it plays. I am saying "Here is the game that already does what you want", there are no modern games quite like the original Thief.

Mods tools. Mod tools would fix everything. They should be included in every game.

Actually no ones saying anything of the sort but keep shouting at that strawman till you're blue in the face.

Also there's totally being a first person stealth game with wide open levels and a focus on non-lethal play released recently. I believe you've mentioned it a few times yourself.

Speaking of, there is always The Dark Mod if people want to try the original games general gameplay in a better engine. There are numerous missions made by modders to try, some of which are extremely good and sometimes have their own unique VA and such. I think it can be downloaded by itself for free these days too, so there isn't even any investment cost!

Pre-loaded and can't wait to play it! I must be the only person excited to play it. It looks like it does what it does well enough to be enjoyable. I'm beyond the "but it's not thief 1/2!" Phase and onto the "this could be a heck of a game by its own right". Damn shame I'm working the weekend it releases :(

So all this back and forth has made me want to play Thief 1 & 2 again. Is there a list of required/recommended mods to modern these up a bit? I heard about the Dark Mod but is that just new missions altogether or do they go back and improve the originals?

The Dark Mod isn't a mod for Thief 1/2, it's a Thief-like engine that's now built upon the open source release of the Doom3 engine with modding tools/assets to allow mod makers to create missions for it.

As far as playing Thief 1 and 2 again, you'll want to get the New Dark patch, which is an unofficial patch for the Thief 1/2 (and System Shock 2) executable that updates it to DirectX9 calls, as I recall, and makes a bunch of other changes to help the games run much better on modern machines. It has full supported resolution options, including native widescreen, and some extra customizable perks like bloom and such that can be tweaked.

You can use TFix for Thief 1 and Tafferpatcher for Thief 2 to patch the games. TFix includes a few other mods to improve Thief 1 a bit as well, not sure if Tafferpatcher includes anything other than updating to New Dark.

There's also a Thief 1/Gold high res texture pack that's been in the works for a while, it's fairly complete at the moment, though I haven't tried it myself yet.

  • MuddBuddMuddBudd Registered User regular
I actually have the high res pack, it's not terribly noticeable, or at the least, it's still fairly blocky/pixeled. It's been so long since my last play of Thief 1 however, that I am not sure I know the difference.

For fuck's sake, shut up about this long, drawn-out argument. While I think people can discuss how a game shouldn't be mercilessly judged solely on the past or how cynical it is for executives to slap a franchise name on a game series all willy nilly, those people must be adults and this thread clearly fails to meet that lofty requirement.

You can resume this insipid debate when the game is out and there's something to base arguments on.

This seems so non-specific outside of some points that anyone could have written it from previews. Nothing is said about the open city portion or how sidequests fit in etc.

Also he's full of shit combat can't be avoided. Two optional difficulty mod specifically prevents combat of any sort - so it has to be bullshit.

From your previous arguments I am wondering what it was that put you off. Probably be best to answer via PM and not in this thread as we are talking about a game that hasn't been officiayl released yet (and it won't be fair to those who do want a chance to do so without spoilers). I am curious what exactly put you off.

I am probably going to get the game still when it comes out here, but only because I have the safety net of the 7 day return from what I am hearing/seen.

I would very much like to hope this doesn't kill the franchise, but it really isn't looking good.

I personally thought the discussion would just be a classic "Older disgruntled fans" vs. "People looking at it without the context of the originals", but would otherwise be a good game. Now I know more, I don't even know if the game won't be terrible in the first place.
