Hah, the only young'uns I live with aren't my own, so I get to enjoy all of the cuteness but bear none of the responsibility!
Wasn't there talk of letting people's kids play against each other some pages back?
Yeah, definitely...my 6 year old vs hydro's 7 year old I believe. I was about to create a new account for my son...probably call it SonOfGogDog or something...just b/c I'm worried that my son will login, go to the mechlab, and make some very poor choice decisions.
He is really liking the new training grounds though....he gets to practice moving, targeting, and destroying immobile objects. And...he doesn't become deadweight like before when pugging! (and thus ruining any rep that I could possibly achieve in the community with my username)
Ah, trolling the ELO system at such a young age!
Also, I demand we play 8mans with SonOfGogDog in a centurion, the rest of us chasing after him in identically colored Atlai, and the objective is to see how long we can keep him alive.

I’m here to give some details on the upcoming Controls change, which Bryan mentioned in the 2013 March Creative Director Update post. There are some goodies in here for both new and veteran players, so let’s get right to it.
GAME SETTINGS
First off, we’ve added two new Gameplay settings: Throttle Decay and Arm Lock.
The new settings are both enabled by default, but can be disabled to restore the original functionality.
IN-GAME OPTIONS
The options screen is now accessible in game and can be accessed by pressing ESC. Aside from changing the new gameplay settings, you can also do the usual stuff like change your game resolution or key-bindings.
CONTROLS UPDATE
We've fleshed out the binding options for finer control over aim, turn and throttle.
NEW FUNCTIONALITY
We’re adding two new bits of functionality to all Mechs: Toggle Arm Lock and Centre Legs.
JOYSTICK ANALOG TURN
Joystick users get Analog Turn. The speed at which your ‘Mech turns is now dictated by the distance that you move your controller from center. This was a key feature missing for pure joystick control.
DIRECT THROTTLE CONTROL
The NumPad can be used to set the throttle to certain levels without decay.
All these bindings can be modified through the options screen, and are scheduled to go live with the March 19th patch.
See you on the Battlefield!
What if it in jam mode, it also stopped your own mech from getting a missile lock on enemies? I feel like that would be pretty balanced. It would mean you could run ECM and tweak your mech to use more ballistics or lasers, or dumbfire missiles, but you lose stuff like STREAK and LRM if you are jamming and preventing others from locking on to stuff around you.

I don't like the "all or nothing" throttle being the default but meh, easily fixed. Looks nice otherwise!
And my HOTAS idea might work out yet (turn with pedals, throttle on...throttle, aim torso with stick, use a hat to aim the arms when needed)
Sounds fun I think I'm going to keep using mouse to aim my torso, and thumb-joystick to move and orient my legs. I'm using a Logitech G13 gameboard, have all the non-vision controls mapped to it (and all the vision controls mapped to my mouse) - it'll be even better with analog turning. Can't wait for that patch, personally!
Wait, what? When did that happen? Do you run a Stalker with a mix of missiles and whatnot?
SRMs and LLASs. It was on Frozen, we were top team. Our scouts leeroy'd straight into your team and died. Your scouts came up behind my team under ECM and gave me SRMs in the back.
By the time I started fighting you on the open field, I had 0 back armor, yellow center torso structure, was still being pecked at by your snipers back on top of Epsilon, and had accomplished precisely fuck all.
So, for the sake of something charitable and open source-ish, or just me not paying for a private repo on Git hub, the code behind the Mechlab is now in a public repository at https://github.com/Kusmeroglu/MWOOSK. The javascript logic is in a terrible state of disarray, and really needs some cleanup and commenting, and probably a good refactor or two. It's hard to write good code in between "Kablam! Kablam!", you see. Anyways, for people who like to look at messy code, there you go. If you find a bug or have a feature request, there's a ticket system here, or we keep up with the forum too..

Problem with this is if you are up against anyone else who doesn't also have ECM, you can just turn off-lock/fire-turn back on and they will generally not be able to also get a lock in that time period if they have streaks.
I think they should've only given it to the raven from the start, making it alot easier to balance ECM around *one* chassis instead of an atlas, two lights and a fast medium... they could've reduced the engine capacity of the raven, turning it into a pure EWAR platform and not a fast light scout/harasser or reduced its armament slightly or any number of things to balance out ECM.

I would love for chassis to show the number of tubes in a given missile slot.

As opposed to now, where you can always lock on when you are running your jamming ECM and they can never lock on
It's not perfect, but it's better than our current situation. At least in your scenario there is a chance that the person without ECM can lock on, heck if they have a Tag they can most likely lock on and fire during your own attempt to lock on unless you are also running tag. And even if you are there is still a chance they can get a volley off.
This only really matters in close range, at long range it is already set to where if you are jamming you are no longer immune to locks outside the jamming range.

“I am so proud of you”. I say to my son. His shattered form lies in my remaining left arm. The red laser light of the base cast my shadow over him.
“That was a good match, wasn’t it?” he whispers. Both arms are gone, along with his left leg. Deep in his center torso, the reactor is dead silent. The only noise from his body is the whine of the damaged actuator in his right leg.
“2 kills, 4 assists, 575 damages.” I read out the stats to him. “You won it for us by capping. You were amazing. The best Commando there ever was.” An oily fluid drips from my chin. We are mechs. We do not bleed or tear. It is only leaking hydraulic fluids, but somehow it seems appropriate.
“Scout from far. Stay at their backs. Use the streaks. Just like you taught me.” He smiles. Yes, just like we have done over and over at the testing ground. Never stop moving. Always use your ECM. Use the covers. He learned everything we taught him. Curious and joyful like his mother. Fierce and brave like me. And fast, so fast. Running circles around me since the moment he was born; faster than I can turn. Even though I know that mech procreation is the pure random mixing of personality programming of the parents, placed in a random chassis by The Server. Somehow he took the best from both of us, and more. Only tall as my knee but he seems to concentrated all the brightness of the world in his 25 ton body. 10 days I had him before this drop, his first. And I love him like I loved nothing else in the world since I lost his mother to indignant salvo of a splatcat.
“I hear they are starting production of Jagermech next week. Maybe I will get that next.” He is cheerful. Not just for my sake but with the carelessness of the young. Only his first drop and he is already done. If he stayed at my side, I could have shielded him from the last desperate rain of LRM, but we would have lost.
“Yeah, or a Dragon. You can still go fast.” I smile back. My own cheerfulness is forced. I have been through 12 drops. I know what happens when you die. You come back in another chassis, yes, with your personality intact. But the memories are gone. The Server has no need of your memories or the spare storage to waste, just the personality programming that makes you unique and different from every other mech out there.
“Nah, Jagermech. Dakka dakka dakka. We will blow them up together.” He sighs.
“Dakka dakka dakka.” I agree. But will you recognize me next to you. Will you know I am your father or am I just another 100 ton Atlas for you to protect or as a meat shield to hide behind? And will I recognize you, fighting shoulder to shoulder, my own determination mirror on your face. Or maybe I will round a corner and recognize the gleam in your eyes, as you aim your twin AC/20 at my center torso.
“See you again soon.” I whisper and close his eyes.

Had a match tonight where an enemy team had four Atlases, two of them DDCs with ECM, and a combined team weight of 630 tons against our one single Stalker and no ECM whatsoever for a combined team weight of 445 tons. The ELO isn't just poor, it flat-out doesn't fucking work. PGI needs to scrap the thing already, because balance is seriously worse than it ever has been; at least under the old system, we could've ended up with at least a couple of Atlases and definitely at least four assaults.
The problem is that pilots like the original poster in that MWO thread are mentally deficient. Lag armor, streaks, and ECM have trained them to think they're effectively invincible against anything but overwhelming firepower, so they run waaaay away from their team, find the enemy... and then get toasted fighting the enemy instead of scouting from reasonable places and coming back.
Funny thing though: This problem happens in WoT a LOT also. The catch is is that the "scout" tanks in WoT are fucking awful at basically everything that doesn't involve looking at people and going fast. And yet, people still will run far away from the team into the enemy line thinking that their super fast scout tanks will magically dodge all the bullets. If you call them on it they always countered with "well, at least you know where they are."
Yeah asshole, we know where they are, still in their fucking spawn because you go infinitely faster than everyone else and got to their base while they were still rolling out.
It was in WoT that I learned to properly scout (which never failed to blow the fucking minds of any pug team I was with) and thankfully those skills transferred beautifully over to MWO with the added bonus that now I can kill all the things once the main bit of scouting is done with.
scout doesn't need to be a kilometer away from the main allied force, it just needs to use its speed to find the enemy quick, tell friendlies, and run back to safety.
Pretty much. There is no reason to run straight into the enemy team. All you need to do is know where to run at the start of the map to be able to figure out what the enemy is up to and just zoom in and watch them. That's it. If you're feeling cheeky you can lock on and start relaying what they're running for builds but with that god awful "warning targeted" alert that can get risky. Once the battle is fully joined then you can either hunt lights, pop straggling snipers, or go run around and be a general nuisance. Until that point though you really shouldn't be shooting at a god damn thing.
They've removed that godawful design decision from the game.

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I really need to get around to setting up my joystick as a throttle in this game.
We've killed most of their dudes, and I'm stuck in my CN9-AL hiding behind a building in Frozen City as I'm missing my left leg, most of my right, both arms, and most of my torso armor. My pair of SRM6 + Artemis is still intact, as are my medium lasers, but I'm basically useless. A near pristine CN9-AL with just 3 large lasers runs out to try to finish me off for an easy kill, and I expected I would die within seconds.
Except I didn't. He just could not kill me, as I stood, near motionless, firing off my SRMs and lasers at him while he circle-strafed me with his lasers, while a distant ally shot at him with LRMs. He circled me a few times, alternately trying for the headshot, center torso, and my remaining leg. Had he focused just one alpha on any one of my 4 remaining components, he would have finished me off right then and there. Fortunately for me, he was an idiot, and I manage to remove his right torso, reducing him to just his single large laser in his CT. At this point, I'm red all around, and a single shot from his torso laser would have finished me right there. He somehow misses, takes all of my missiles in the CT, and promptly dies, finishing the game.
Savior Kills: Upon killing an enemy Mech. If that enemy had been attacking a teammate who has a critical component that is 50% health or lower within the last 10 seconds you will be awarded 7500CBills, and 150XP.
Defensive Kills: Upon killing an enemy Mech. If that enemy was currently capping a base, anyone who had attacked the capturing Mech within the last 10 seconds will be awarded 7500CBills, and 150XP.

Yeah, it's most likely a bug that it also grants the bonus on assists. A very welcome, though!
Raven 3Ls are still broken as hell. Seriously, everything else I can at least fight but Raven 3Ls are just stupid. I never seem to be able to actually do anything to them.
Raven 3Ls are still broken as hell. Seriously, everything else I can at least fight but Raven 3Ls are just stupid. I never seem to be able to actually do anything to them.
Actually, I'm having a much better time against Raven-3Ls with my laser mechs nowadays. (So much so that I took the "all ravens must die!" quote out of my sig ;-) ) If they circle me and I can get a good leg turning/torso tracking vibe going, I sometimes manage to hit them with a full, uninterrupted quadruple LLAS blast. More than one was intimidated and buggered off, or died on the spot. Whoever suggested that you should aim for their thighs deserves the highest of praise!
Also, I have a much better feel (and even less respect) for the 3L since I bought myself one. It really is a no-skill mech if run with Streaks. But I think we might see less and less of them: I've experienced more than once that teammates take potshots at my 3L at the start of a match, because their hate is so enormous... that must be quite discouraging to the weaker-willed
Yeah, I ran a 3L as well, back when ECM just came out. It really is an absurdly easy, no skill mech. The combination of ECM, streaks, speed, and a wonky hitbox just make it infuriating to play against.
I single handedly won a game today with it. 4 kills, 4 assists including 2 kills as the last guy on our team (the 4MG spider doesn't fucking count).
This mech is too much fun!
I keep telling people, but no one ever believes me! Playing that mech a lot is part of where my reservations about using damage done as a metric come from. It's so easy to apply pinpoint damage with it, you don't have to deal high damage to kill people.
So... with a 300XL, what do you do with the extra tonnage? Here's my build: The Quadapult, and a fun variation, the Quadapult with MGs. 18 or 19 DHS doesn't really make that much of a difference, after all... but I kept forgetting that I have MGs, so I took them out again
(Edited for slightly less epeen stroking. I'm sorry.)
