Experimented with SRM4s in the training ground. They scatter a fair bit at the very end of their range and stay mostly clustered before that, but they bunch up ultra-tight right around the 130-135 meter range. So testing against a Commando, you can put virtually all the damage on the torso sections at that range.
Not always applicable, but extremely useful if you can move to the right range.
Kind of a sniping 9M, with large pulses to discourage approaching mediums/lights.
If you're running the 9M with less than a 385 XL, you're doin' it wrong. That thing's my favorite 'mech, and the one I tend to do best in--I use a 385 XL, 3 MLAS, 2 (standard) PPCs, and 23 DHS.
Also, if you're running lasers on the 8Q, 3 LLAS and 4 MLAS is about the best setup. Pair a LLAS with a MLAS in each double energy hardpoint; this combination will use exactly 3 critical slots and allow you to fit a 300 STD engine and 22 DHS. More than 3 LLAS means you have to start sacrificing heat sinks to free up criticals, which is usually not worthwhile in my experience.
The Awesome in general is all about cramming as many heat sinks as humanly possible onto the 'mech.

That really is some good advice @CycloneRanger - thanks! :-) I just bought a 9M yesterday and have been running it with 4 LLAS and a 385XL, because it seemed familiar that way. I'll definitely try your build though. I'm liking this chassis, just saving up for a couple more variants now
Any tips on Groups for that 8Q build?
I run 3 LLAS in group 1 (left mouse), 4 MLAS in group 2 (right mouse), and the LLAS/MLAS pair from the arm additionally in group 3 (spacebar in my case; I don't have a gaming mouse).
You could alternately have a group preset to chain fire the LLAS (note that if you're ever in a situation where you need to chain fire in the first place, use the LLAS instead of MLAS as larges are more heat efficient). I prefer having a group for arm-mounted weapons only, though; it helps when moving over hills. I have never found it necessary to chain fire with that setup; I tend to wait another two seconds or so and then fire all three LLAS at once. With 22 DHS you can afford to be pretty free with the LLAS. The 4 MLAS are mostly there for those times when you need an extra 20 points of alpha and the heat bar can go fuck itself, or for when you're just engaging and at low heat. If you're near max heat, rely on the larges.
Also, I forgot to mention it but I normally remove a ton of leg armor and add a BAP. It's not terrifically useful on that build (the one real use is faster targeting information when you pop around a corner and need to know where that Atlas' weak point is), but you really don't need max leg armor and without the BAP you top out at 79.5 tons.

The Hero Mech pricing is high, but on the other hand, I don't think PGI ever intended for us to be playing PokeMech with them. They strike me as a good investment for somebody who wants to make some extra money and XP but can't keep a premium account running all the time.

Problem is that they're selling Heavy Metal right now. If somebody was unhappy with purchasing Heavy Metal because it doesn't actually play heavy metal, then yeah, that's totally reasonable.
Also, matches are freezing at the end EVERY TIME. That's just great. Game doesn't lock up, you just can't type anything and the match won't conclude. The mech also stays locked into the last match for several minutes even after the match is over. Sigh.
Getting the same issue at ends of match and it is awful. This patch is really annoying me.
ON THE OTHER HAND, I just removed fog and depth of field from my game, turned off colorguard or some other cfg option, changed my fov to 80 (a great medium between default 75 and typical change to 85) and the game looks amazing!
I just used the provided PGI default Ultra_settings.cfg and removed DOF, the color option, and changed FOV. Super easy, and the game looks 10x better. Highly recommend this!
Mon. April 1st, 3050: Raving MechWarrior found in downtown Solaris VII hospital claims "Cloned space fascists" destroyed his lance, company. States they rode 'giant forest lupines' into combat.
Cloned space facists are, of course, clanners and giant forest lupines are Timber Wolves, the Clan name for the Mad Cat. The thing is that canonically the Clan invasion started in March 3050, so I don't know how they're going to try to stick with the timeline for community warfare if they're already off. Maybe they'll set back the clock, but it doesn't seem like it.
I was running around on testing grounds trying to see if the engine crit thing is true, and it doesn't look like it is. After stripping a 'Mech's center torso, a minute or so of machinegun fire didn't kill it.
As a side note, holy shit. I never noticed this before (probably because I've never been in a 'Mech where you could see the barrels before), but the UAC/5 barrels rotate when you fire. It's only one barrel position per shot, but it's a neat little touch. You really need to be in a Jager to be able to see it.
Edit: it's not just the UAC/5s, other autocannons recoil now when fired. Nifty.

But yeah, they're going to be way behind now unless they turn back the clock.
I built myself a 5xLLAS CTF-1X...and played some of the worst robot driving that I've managed in months. Holy crap. I blame my flu over the weekend, but that bad boy is gonna take a nice long garage vacation before I try that again.

I popped my 1k damage cherry last night running the DD. 4x MG, 2x AC.5, 2x LL. I have since dropped the MG and upgraded the AC to the UAC.
Don't all missiles lose their AOE effect today? The last hotfix didn't completely remove it did it?
I hope that's not the case. Missiles are in a pretty good spot right now, except for the usual silliness of streaks being dumb because they're way too good for requiring no aiming at all. SRMs still hurt, but they aren't the undisputed kill-everything weapons any more, and LRMs might even be a little underpowered.
SRMs are probably 'okay', but LRMs are pretty junky right now. You basically have to either sell out for LRMs to make them worthwhile (which means you're garbage at anything else) or you have to be huge and just accept the fact that you're going to eat lots of (better) sniper fire in return for using them.
If there's anything that needs to be looked at, the abundance of Jaegers has said maybe that+2xAC/20 is a hair strong, but eh.

I'm personally not super fond of brawling with the K2, the lack of jumpjets and the engine size you need to run to accomplish it is kind of offputting, but YMMV.
So holy shit is this patch buggy as fuck. I think a break until the next hotfix/patch is in order because god damn. My mech has been stuck in game after the match has been over for about five minutes now which is just icing on top of all the other visual glitches.
I just had a fan-fucking-tastic match on Alpine in my Dragon 1N. I didn't drop below yellow armor at all, I got an assist or a kill on every enemy but 1, had a ton of component destructions (especially from a Stalker who just kept walking away from my while I lasered his ass), ...
... and then the match ended and I didn't get any points or XP or Cbills and I couldn't get my Dragon back. Sadnessness!

I have never gotten this bug ever.
My minimap is a blank square with a fixed triangle inside, doesn't rotate with my torso either.
New overpriced hero mech that plays a sound clip too quietly and the sound clip itself isn't really as cool as it is in the lore.
New consumables are out and they do absolutely shit damage. They don't even do enough to dislodge a light.
Tons of new bugs, freezes, and crashes.
If so, I'm definitely going to be rolling a little of the ol' Karl Friedrich. There's no kill like a one-shot kill.
It was mentioned but it looked like the paperdoll bug to me. I don't know if we have had confirmation outside the sole report.
