Explosive! [a cat shit story]

So my cat is explosively shitting again. And he refuses to use the litter box. I've taken him to the vet, and am following up tomorrow, but, it seems both the high fiber food, the deworming pill, the antibiotics and the gut flora additives haven't worked.

What else could possibly be the problem? Any ideas? It doesn't appear to be any blood in the crap, but, it has taken a slightly different form after the finishing of the medication, ie, really squishy but more solid than before (where it was almost liquid), but really smelly (I'm assuming it's the high fiber food and gut flora that are the cause of this).

Is he likely to improve in the next few days? Is there anything else I should try? I've changed litters, foods, litterbox's shape/size/color, separating him from the other cats.

Sounds like he is sick, but besides that what type of food are you feeding him? Make sure it is grain free and preferably not a kibble Try feeding nothing but, say, canned Wellness Core and see if anything changes in a few days, assuming the vet can't find an illness.

honeslty all those will cause diarhea in their own right minus the probiotic. could be the new food. sounds like a lot of change in a little time

Gluten intolerance or other allergy perhaps? Try some gluten free cat food, for a few days. Hopefully your cat isn't finicky about changing food brand.

Nah we changed each one of those slowly. Think over the course of 2 months slowly.

He's eating non kibble food at the moment and still having the issue, food straight from the vet to be anti-gluten. Some sort of high fiber wet food, forgot the specific brand off the top of my head.

He seems to be a bit better now with going in the litterbox but specifically requires an upstairs litterbox now, whereas before we've been working fine for 2 years with a downstairs one.

But I don't like the smell of liter upstairs, agitates my sinuses while I'm sleeping and I wake up all congested and stuffed.

Multiple litter boxes are pretty much a must, sadly. The rule of thumb is one per cat plus one extra; same as water dishes.

  • bowenbowen Sup? Registered User regular
Yeah we have done that. Just don't like it upstairs. Just upset he's been fine for 11 years with this system then, nope, haha, fuck you.

    I hate cats.

Oh, 11? Yeah, inner things are probably winding down at 11. It's not like he's CHOOSING to rocket blast crap all over.

What's worse is he sniffs all over the place to find his litter box, but he goes downstairs to pee, but when he's got to shit, if there isn't one upstairs he shits on the floor in the corner.

I just can't think of why he's doing this.

I think "11" is the key number here.

Let's figure this out before Magic Pink regales us with a childhood story!

Still utterly baffling why he does it for pissing but not shitting. Like, I just can't fathom a concept that's not "I motherfucking hate you, clean up my shit."

I thought that too. He'll gladly sniff around the room, go up then downstairs again, look at the litter box, then go back upstairs and shit.

Naw, he's not doing it to be mean; I can guarantee that. He may have some mild blockage that causes pain or discomfort when he poops so he's associating that pain with the litter box.

  • bowenbowen Sup? Registered User regular
He is shitting in the box now so long as it's upstairs.

Maybe he associates the pain with downstairs only I guess. That would suck. Vet didn't feel anything, but she didn't want to do any imaging on him yet and tried the meds first.

Do you have a hooded litter box? That may help with your breathing. You may wanna look into some of the more expensive "dust free" litters or clumping litter if you aren't already.

  • bowenbowen Sup? Registered User regular
He won't use the hooded ones (he can't fit apparently). They're trying a second antibiotic and doing some sort of imaging (cat scan maybe? heh)

Hmm, we've been using Tidy Cats, and it's not very... tidy. Gonna try switching back to what you use, @bowen.

One of my favorite litters TBH. The tidy cats one is really messy. Best part about fresh step is when you vacuum it, it doesn't pelt your legs.

When my cat was younger she would always go in the same spot in our bedroom, just refused to use the litter box. I got tired of cleaning it up one day and just plopped the litter box down in that spot, and it hasn't been a problem since despite moving houses several times since. I think if it's always in the same place sometimes the cat is just trying to tell you that that spot is where they are happiest doing their business.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

I have had dozens of cats in my life and I have found the best litters are the ones with the finest particles. Unfortunately that same property makes them much more likely to get, and stay, airborne when pouring in fresh litter or scooping out used litter. You could always try putting an air purifier near the litter box. Even a cheap one right next to it should help suck up most of the litter dust and odors. If the cat has decided that is where he is going to shit you may be, well, shit out of luck trying to force him elsewhere and just make the most of the situation.

    Similar situation

We got a new kitten in August. Our older cat is 7 and she was eating fancy feast for years all wet food no problem.

We got him kitten food and he had really bad diarrhea for months(using the litter box at least but stinking up the house). Had him checked for worms, brought stool samples and he just had a sensitive stomach. We tried all kinds of different foods:

    Science Diet
    Blue Buffalo
    Fancy Feast
    Etc..

We tried various types of sensitive stomach foods of those brands as well. Finally through some googling we found out that some cats actually have incredibly sensitive stomachs in regards to grains. So we found grain free food from amazon.

Pinnacle is the brand we got: http://www.pinnaclepet.com/Feline/index.htm

A few days after eating that his bowl movements became more and more normal and now he's totally fine.

It's kind of expensive so we switched to a new brand this past week called Merrick - Before Grain (still expensive but cheaper at least)
    http://www.merrickpetcare.com/consumer/products/list.jsp?cat1=3&cat2=10&categories=Cat-Before-Grain

He can eat the wet and dry versions of grain free foods. We also switched our older cat to it as well and she likes it just fine. So far he has been fine on the new Merrick food as well.

    Good luck!

I had trouble with a number of cats and crap food. Once I tried Wellness Core http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/product-details.aspx?pet=cat&pid=23 , I didn't have those problems any more. I use that food by default now (the Indoor Health version is good for lap-cats).

It's not terribly expensive, but I'm open to something cheaper that anyone has had good success with.

Hey there fellow exploding cat ass owner! It may be worth looking into vitamin b12 injections (talk to your vet, etc). Issues processing vitamin b12 can lead to constant explodey poos. Lots of things can cause issues with vitamin b12 absorption, most of them related to general diseases and issues processing food, as your cat seems to have. I just started my cat on b12 injections after well over a year of spraying poop all over and making a giant mess for me to clean up every day and it certainly seems to have helped. I have seen some soft, but still turd shaped poo.

It's cheap... $30 for 100cc bottle, my cat gets 1/4 cc/week currently and the time between injections will increase.

All blood levels are normal, and extremely normal for a senior cat. He's on a new antibiotic for Giardia and other types of organisms (forget the list they rattled off), but he seems to be doing immensely better.

No idea how he got it, none of the other cats were affected and all share the same food and water. Plus I'm on city water.

Yeah, that is strange. I'd keep it in mind for the future in any case. What I've been reading lately says that cats can store enough b12 in their liver that tests will show proper levels for a long time. My cat also tested ok several times. Something is obviously wrong, though. She definitely has IBD, but the poo issue started after she had had that for awhile. We started the b12 injections because it's cheap, it doesn't hurt anything if it's not needed, and something more is clearly wrong and the b12 is known to help in a lot of cases.

If the antiobiotics are making an improvement for you, that may be all there is to it, though.

  • bowenbowen Sup? Registered User regular
Let's hope, because fuck that added expense right in it's smelly liquid poo.

They give metronidazole for diarrhea. Not just for giardia. It's just that flagyl basically wipes out all gut bacteria allowing normal flora to take over. Unless it's an outdoor cat, there is very little chance it was actually it

For the record, they make an unscented version of this particular litter now. It's the type I use after switching from Schweat Scoop. I have allergies myself, and it doesn't seem to bother me.
