I'm still on the fire-breathing duck thing. And I've just found a spot sometimes (but not often) produces the elusive Carpenterbug, which I need for so much stuff.
Yeah, Carpenterbugs are handy. Later on you get them in bulk, but by then you don't need them. I'd suggest the desert area for early Carpenterbugs.
I have never found Carpenterbugs in the desert. And believe me, I've looked.
I just have lousy luck when it comes to those little critters.
Let me know if you need some help online, at the moment I'm pugging with randoms until the cross region patch hits but I'll happily make a lower rank gunner set and help you out.
Heck, why not? I'm online right now. Though I've only got about an hour.

Couple of things about the dual swords. I noticed that a lot of the time you would run in, do a couple of hits then run back out to avoid attacks, but you tend to need to keep pressure on with the DS as they have a low base damage but they attack so fast that if you keep hitting the DPS ramps up like crazy. A lot of being able to stay in is knowing what monsters are going to do and when which you'll only really learn by fighting them more, but with DS if you hit enough while in demo mode (press R) thew gauge under your health and stam will fill up and your rolls will change into charge slides which seem to allow you to reposition easier. As usual SD gives a good tutorial on em:
I need to jump into some online with the Euro people today. Been focusing too much on single player. Did bust out HR3 with a couple of buddies but apart from that.

Throw bombs at him while he's spinning to make him all dizzy.
His humps are huge weak points.
edit: oh durr you said bombs ... or its possible to just attack his feet while hes spinning. Once his tail thingie is fully broken off he's just a big flopping idiot. The only notable thing about him is his overall health is pretty high so he's always going to be a longer fight.
Is there a good reason to keep upgrading the Bolt Axe? Seems that the Sparqlepeco would always do more damage, provided that the enemy isn't Thunder resistant.
And if it is, I won't be using either thunder axe.

Aah, I broke his horn (left one broken, right chipped) and figured that was as much as I could do there. I smashed his humps, they looked pretty totalled, and I cracked his tail. It looked like his tail could be beaten on some more and broken more, but I didn't do that.
Flashbombs when spinning? Check. Rolling under his tail when he's spinning is a little tricky for me. Managed a few times, but more often than not took a spinning wrecking ball to the whole body.
Jhen Mohran is unique but not as bad as I thought.
I could see the fight being tough for people to figure out who haven't at least watched a video of it before though.
Nice that we were able to kill him last night with 5 minutes remaining, despite missing the first Dragonator and me not having an optimal hit with the second. And only having 3 people. Wasn't too bad.

Looking at the weapon tree, that bolt axes ends up with the highest amount of white sharpness.
I would only go with the peco if you need 2 sockets to get an extra skill. Other than the 2 sockets the fully upgraded bolt wins hands down.
I always look at elemental damage in regards to how fast you attack. Like with dual swords, elemental or slime is really really good. But say with greatsword or hammer, not so much.
The phials are different on those however, so that might make a difference for you.

His tail breaks in 2 stages, one its all chipped and then it falls off. He literally becomes a giant walking tard after the tail is fully off. If you have trouble breaking it, sleep/para/shock him and use barrel bomb+'s on it.

Also, where can I find Blossom Crickets? I want the Magia Charm.

The final form of bolt is Power. It starts elemental.
I always look at the end form, because you could end up wasting your time if something about the end form is bad.
The brachi lance for example... its a piece of shit. I have its final form, because the only other lance slime weapon requires FreeElement. But the brachi lance is still shit on a sandwich. Then again my opinion on slime is that only certain weapons are good for it and others its just a huge waste of time.
Where can I get Blossom Crickets? A Google search says "use Hunters for Hire" but is that the only way? I have the 3DS version and nobody around me with the game. Are there codes you guys can give me to get your Guild Cards for use with that feature?

The only information I can find anywhere is Hunters for Hire. There are no codes. You will have to StreetPass with someone to exchange cards in order to do it, or else find somebody with a Wii U and beg them to borrow it and buy a LAN adapter and go online with the 3DS game with us and ask to exchange guild cards.

I'm curios why you think that. I've made every slime weapon other than the light and heavy bowguns and have the GS, Duals, Lance, and Hammer upgraded where they need g-rank parts. My slime application comparison is also before the upgrades since I used them in rotation before getting the Steel Uragaan and Black Diablos parts for the upgrades.
The Duals are easily the best for applying slime, probably the Brachy bow next, but the lance has been applying slime far, far more often than any other weapon after those two. The SnS would easily be after the lance, given how little slime it applies when I use it. Would probably place it above the hammer and GS. LS after hammer and GS oddly enough. Barely touched the hunting horn, but slime seemed on par with the hammer. Made the gun lance and switch axe but never used them.
Of note for me was the hammer, GS, LS, and SnS. The GS and hammer apply slime at a stupid high rate for me. Add that to Cha-Cha and Kayamba having slime element and it's explosion city for village quests. The SnS and LS never want to make it rain green jelly though, been very disappointed with them slime wise.
Is your issue with it applying slime or damage/sharpness? I'm only HR5 and fought one gold ceadus before calling it last night to help someone with an urgent, but slime seemed to apply just fine on him with the lance like it was a low rank or high rank monster. Damage and sharpness wise I know the Brachy weapons finally taper off when you can upgrade weapons with g-rank parts, so if that's your issue with it I get that.
Well I have to agree with Tycho's post on MH. A couple of friends had previously tried to get me to try mh2fu on vita and we played a little multi over adhoc party... But I wasn't impressed. I tried the demo of MH3U at their urging and finally got to fight something big, so I decided to jump in with both feet. I bought it for the 3ds and a circle pad pro and had a great time with it at PAX. Played with one of those friends but also a couple folks I met at PAX and now I finally get MH. There is a huge barrier to entry with so many systems explained (partially) all in steps in the beginning... If you can slog through it there really is something so amazing there. It's like Shadows Of The Colossus but with more combat. I love the meaningful battles - it makes 'grinding' fun. (Granted, with 4 players we can take down things rank 2 without any real concern but it's still a challenge to break off all the pieces) Discovering all the systems has been a real joy.
I'm HR3 in multi right now and happy to make some friends if you guys want to do some hunts. I have a regular group who has been hunting a lot but we have an open spot sometimes (and sometimes they're not online! *gasp*) Anyway, my ID is supagoat.
So the earliest awakened armor you can get is the big gold whale, yes?
That is ass.
I was under the impression the Gigginox+ gives awakened as well. I'll double check that.
Checked yeah it does as well, although Caedeus+ is just before that, Gigginox might be easier to get it on.
On a side note, for those who say they heard that the story isn't that good: You must have heard it from heartless people because the story for Moga village is very touching and it's probably one of the few games where I've actually felt some sort of attachment to a town as we struggled back from the brink and banded together against adversity. The are all pretty memorable characters with some good personality.

You want the big, white, whale-manatee-horned-snake-headed abomination for awakening, not the gold one.
G rank Ceadeus (Helios X for males, Selene X for females) has HG earplugs, Awaken, Partbreaker, Demonic Blessing (negative stat), and a few points in a handful of other skills.
G rank Gold Ceadeus (Helios Z males, Selene Z females) has HG Earplugs, Sharpness+1 (Blademaster)/Load Up (Gunner), Water Attack +1 or +2, and a handful of points in other skills.
You do need gold parts to make Helios X on top of the vanilla Ceadeus parts.
I have a question. I am seriously considering saving up for an upgrade to an XL because of my eyes getting older.
Is it as great an upgrade as people say for such things? or am I wasting my time and should just get used to being a geezer?

I'm confused at why Slime Lance isn't considered good. I was using it and that thing is an absolute monster. The benefits of a Lance are that you can have near-constant DPS on monsters. If they run far away, you either Shield Advance to close a small gap, or Charge to close a larger gap. If the monster attacks you, or roars, you just Counter and you have almost no break in your DPS at all. I fought a bunch of HR4 monsters last night with macho and the Slime Lance was doing some major work. Granted, having macho there with a Slime Great Sword was great because we'd both be applying the slime and lots of explosions were happening all over the place. Still, there were a few fights that I started right on top of a monster, while macho had to take some time to get to me, and I'd have the monster exploded at least once or twice before he ever got to me. This showed me that the Lance is a great Slime weapon by its own right. We took on the High Rank Duramboros and, I gotta tell you, he tried to do his Hammer-swing ballerina dance at least five or six times, he got it off maybe twice, because he'd start swinging his tail, I'd Shield Advance through it, poke at his feet a few times, do a Slime Explosion and bam, big palooka on the ground with his hump ripe for the hitting.
The Lance is tricky to use, but boy is it probably one of the best weapons you could ever have if you master it's intricacies.
