ive made mistake of my life!

sillycowsillycow Registered User new member
ok, i was a complete idiot yesterday. i filled a suitcase full of clothes at work, intended to steal them and left the case by the exit- but as i clocked out i decided not to do it. i walked past the case made no effort to pick it up and tried to call my daughter in law to see if she was in town. was about to walk away but security guard noticed cases and suspected me. so i go into work today and they interviewed me - i admitted planning to steal the case but said i had no idea what was in it was just going to try my luck but changed my mind at last minute.they asked me my size in clothes and shoes and i lied so the ones in the case were a size too small. i was suspended with pay until disciplinary hearing. does this mean they will prosecute me ? i dont know if they have evidence of me putting stuff in the case but surely if they had then they would have said so by now. only 5 cameras work so dont think they can see where i did it. i dont care about losing my job as i deserve it, but really dont want a criminal record for intending to steal when i changed my mind. im not going to disciplinary hearing as i dont want my job back and am too embarrassed. should i write a letter to apologise and resign? i just dont know what to do- this will be my first ever offence- god knows what i was thinking ! im in the UK. can anyone help me with some certain answers please not simple guesses- feel free to cause my stupidity and deceit i deserve it!

It may be unwise to post an admission of guilt on a publicly available internet forum.

I'm not going to condone what you were going to do, but I'm also not going to sit here and point a finger and mock you or make you feel like a terrible human being. It sounds like you may be starting to do that yourself.

I think what you need to do from here is examine A) Why it was that you were going to do this and B) Start thinking about ways to perhaps make changes in your life so that this type of a thing never comes across in your mind as something to do again. Resorting to theft should never be the answer and if you are at a point in your life where it is then you need to start looking for help to make your life better for you. If charges are laid then the standard "find a lawyer" advice is of course the first and foremost thing but I think given the seriousness of the situation that maybe you should see about speaking with someone in a financial advisory position also.

    And I agree with this.

thank you. i seriously dont know what i was thinking- just greed, but then as i was about to leave i realised how bad it would be if i did it. i actually thought thank god that i de not do it and couldn't believe that i had done such a thing. but as i admitted my intention and that i had stopped myself then surely they wont prosecute ? to top it off i got a new job yesterday and am worried what the old employer can tell the new one. im such an idiot!

Um, well.. @LewieP's Mummy is pretty knowledgeable about this stuff.

But yeah, posting this stuff on the internet is not really the wisest of actions to take.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

Probably a good idea not to tell your old employer about your new work.

I'm not sure they can charge you with anything if the stuff didn't actually leave the building or got caught trying to leave with them. Need to talk to a legal expert about that. Make no admissions or excuses until you have talked with one. But yes, you are probably fired.

Yeah, it might be in your best interest to just be fired, and don't talk to the police or your old coworkers/boss without a lawyer. Really is in your best interest to pretend to yourself didn't admit anything, and get a lawyer. Now is a good time for representation. You have a right to remain silent, use that right.

Good choice not going through with it.

Never admit guilt to something you didn't do. Or something you did do without legal representation.

Since you already have in this case, I would seek the advice of a solicitor.

Lawyer, as soon as you can. Do not talk to the police, and honestly, do not continue to talk to your employer about it. I'd probably resign the position too (but honestly, aside from 'Don't talk to police, do talk to a lawyer', you probably shouldn't listen to Internet advice, because of how potentially serious the charges are).

IANAL, I do not live in the UK, etc, this is not advice, etc:

My sibling was a co-manager for Wal Mart, and part of his job was loss prevention. I know he (well, Wal Mart) was able to lay shoplifting charges on people so long as they had reasonable evidence that they were going to steal an item, even if they didn't actually leave the building with it yet.

But yes, OP definitely should seek legal counsel.

Aside from that, like @MichaelLc said, you made the right call at the last second by choosing not to steal. But, like you've already said, you already made the big mistake - don't make another one by just hoping this goes away or trying to talk your way out of trouble. See a lawyer, and see one right away (and do not talk to the police. If you're arrested, just stay silent, and let legal counsel do the talking for you).

Depending on your jurisdiction you may be guilty of attempted larceny. Stop talking to people about it. You probably don't need a lawyer until you're actually charged with something, but for goodness sakes stop confessing all over yourself.
