Hah, and unintentionally you just bumped Simcity to the number two spot of my "Oh my god what the fuck were they thinking launching with this" list
Because wow was FFXIV laughably bad when it launched.
I mean at least Simcity has a a few enjoyable hours before it transforms into a useless piece of shit. FFXIV was, seemingly intentionally, terrible in every aspect at launch.
No, wait. I take that back. It was terrible in every aspect except prettiness. It was (and still is) a gorgeous game. Also the crafting was kinda fun when the game wasn't actively attempting to kill any and all enjoyment you could possibly derive from playing it.
Damn. SimCity doesn't even look good (to me anyway). At least FFXIV got relaunched successfully. Sort of.

What was more disapointing? This game, Brink or Spore?
Saw the screenshots. The stuff from the first one should just have been in game. Bigger cities, more transportation. But I could only dream of the simcity I want.

I'm pretty sure I spent more hours playing SimTower in the early 2000s than i did playing SimCity 5.
I played a lot of IV. I was dabling with it recently, and the graphics don't bother me. The square does. And NAM is very hard to use. I would take a Sim City 4 rush hour in 3D and be happy. Yeah, there are other things I would like fixed, but that would be a great start. I watched Civitas until, it did nothing. So, yeah still waiting.

Sorry I'm late kids, new Sim City patch dropped yesterday:
Hi Mayors -- below you'll find the notes for Update 6:
• New: Granite Lake Region - New 10 city lake region: http://www.simcity.com/en_US/blog/article/building-granite-lake
While creating Granite Lake, we had a few key goals:
- Provide a region with a new visual style that is highlighted by vistas from each city.
- Two clusters of five cities that are connected by boats traveling across the lake.
- Create a scenic central lake around which the city sites will be placed. Includes shipping lanes to keep that gameplay option for cities on the shoreline.
- A region with unique and challenging terrain to provide a different experience than the previously released Edgewater Bay.
• New: RCI Tuning - Tuning to make Industrial needed more. Commercial buildings will now lose profit if they don’t receive enough freight from industry. The demand bars will respond more accurately to which zones are needed. This change will impact existing cities: http://www.simcity.com/en_US/blog/article/making-i...dustry-matter-rci-improvements
• New: RCI height variations for Density 3 Buildings. This will add more variety to the look of your cities: http://on.fb.me/14fcVSZ
• New: Borderless windowed mode setting.
• Fixes for some issues of the “out of money” problem or unexplained abandonment that some players have experienced.
• Clarity around unfilled jobs and workers to make sure players are messaged that there may be an issue where workers cannot get to unfilled jobs.
• Residential and Commercial buildings are now more consistently in the same wealth in an area of a particular land value. Improves visual consistency.
• Help Wanted, no Shoppers, and No Jobs alerts have been added to the Zoning info panel as alerts.
• Data Layer: Greater map accuracy on the land value map. Residential and Commercial wealth colors added. Abandoned buildings show up red.
• Data Layer: Land Value map shows when placing parks.
• Fixed issue where RCI sometimes builds on roads.
• Fix performance slowdown in cities with more than one million tourists.
• UI Clarity: Show which city hall modules are already placed in the region on the palette UI.
• Garbage UI: fixed issue where garbage UI sometimes showed bins that had already been picked up.
So, after all the patches, what's the state of the game now? Despite everything y'all have been saying, it looks pretty fun. I'm not really a deep strategy guy (my last SimCity was 2000) so I don't know if I'll notice a lot of the flaws that you guys do, and my only computer is a MacBook Pro, so it's one of the few PC games I can play properly.

New: Brand new tool to create bridges, overpasses, and tunnels when you draw your roads.
When building your road, pressing the , key or . key will lower or raise the road accordingly creating overpasses, bridges and tunnels.
Note: Existing road layouts cannot be raised or lowered
New: Improvements for Traffic behavior to make it smarter. This should reduce the number of lines formed by all available vehicles converging on a single spot. This affects all vehicles including Police, Fire Trucks, Moving Trucks, Garbage Trucks, Recycling Trucks, Resource Trucks, Buses, Ambulances, and Civilian vehicles going home, to work, or shopping.
New: Tree tools – Place individual trees around your city. These tools are located at the end of the Nature Parks palette.
Terrain: Fixes an issue some player’s see where terrain covers sections of roads while the camera is zoomed out.
Fixed an issue where the fire animation would sometimes continue when fire was extinguished.
Parks: Sports parks are now accepting Sims 24 hours a day.
Airship: The number of Airship passenger trips should now be correct over multiple days.
Vehicles: Vehicles now accelerate and decelerate faster, allowing them to leave buildings and go through intersections more efficiently.
Freight: Freight trucks now only leave factories if they have a valid delivery destination.

As for the state of the game, here's the basic gist which should help you decide if you want in.
- Servers have been stable for some time, you will not have problems connecting like launch day.
- Regional gifting and trading is working more reliably now.
- Traffic is getting better, but still gets hung up in certain sections.
- The fun value quickly diminishes once you start maxing out your city. Basically, once all the land is fully developed, it's a lot more difficult to find fun things to do after.
- If you play the game at turtle speed, you can definitely prolong your enjoyment of the game. It's actually very easy to avoid disasters (unless this has been patched) as I rarely get any disasters in my city, and this is non sandbox mode.
- Playing with other people at this point in time, seems kind of pointless. There's really nothing to do except to trade stuff with each other. However, each player is usually determined to be a self sufficient city. So unless you're playing with some close friends, it wouldn't make sense to rely on your neighbor to provide you power and water. You have to play with the full intention of trading with your neighbor.
- The game is very easy, it will not be difficult to create a city that's raking in the profit. However, there are moments where it can be challenging to keep your money in the green.
The true enjoyment I get out of the game, is basically just watching the city grow and thrive. I like watching the Sims go to work and seeing Maxis man fly into action against Dr. Vu. It's a treat to watch the trains pull into the station and watch freight deliveries go out on trucks. If you don't mind watching little models move around your city, you can get a lot of enjoyment out of this. Also, it can be a lot of fun to see if you can plan out the most efficient road layout in order to avoid traffic jams.
Overall though, it's fun to play and build, but once that city is maxxed out, it's usually best to start in another zone. Expanding the city limits and letting you customize highway entrances will go a LONG way to make this game much more investing.
Fuck it, gonna buy this shit when I step in the door. Do I have to go through Origin to buy digitally? And any tips for a new guy?

I've decided that the enjoyment I should be deriving from the game should be akin to setting up a good model railroad. Get the layout setup, the land values where you want and then sit back and watch the simulation. Hell a model railroad game with this engine would be a joy to play.
Fuck it, gonna buy this shit when I step in the door. Do I have to go through Origin to buy digitally? And any tips for a new guy?
Yes, you need origin to play. The main tip for the new guy is to play it slowly for your first time around. You're gonna f'up, but you'll learn from your mistakes rather quickly.
Actually, the very FIRST thing you should do, is look at the maps and pick out what resource you want to specialize in.
If you're in a map with a lot of Oil, naturally you want to specialize in oil wells. If you end up in an area with no resources, than you can choose tourism and gambling.
So click on your data layers tab on the lower right and view where the resources are located AND TAKE NOTE OF WIND DIRECTION! If you build industry, the wind will change direction of 45 degrees and could pollute your city if you're not careful, or your neighbors city.
Basically I like to switch to data layer view, see where the resources are, and draw dirt roads and avenues accordingly. Then I'll upgrade the dirt roads over time so I could support a higher density population.

Blurp, despite the dumb DLC and somewhat slow patch progress at least it appears some folks in Maxis are trying to fix this game. I would like to come back to it, as despite its flaws it felt like I had a city of Kandor to play with.
I haven't played the new SimCity in months. I think I played for the first week or two after it came out...and I mean, when it was working. I looooved SimCity and I did really enjoy this game too, but the traffic was killing me and all the other bugs that would basically just destroy my city. I'm downloading all the new updates (I can't even remember what my last update was) right now and hopping back in tonight. I hope it's more...er...playable?

It will definitely be playable. If you're smart about the traffic you can keep it under control, but it can still get a little crazy. Hopefully patch 7 will address these issues.
Okay, I'll try again. I'll accept an invite later today if there is space left in the region.

Just ducking my head in to see if things have improved. It seems they have not.
The wife and I played for a couple weeks right at launch and both just ended up angry and frustrated at all the broken shot and horrible design decisions.
But hey, at least we can buy expensive DLC now? Great...
Everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty
Also, what server are we using these days? When I logged in the last one I used was South America but no one on the friends list was online at the time.
I played for a bit, and yeah, it's still fun for at least 20 minutes on Turtle speed to start with.

I stayed on the legacy server of NA East 1. But until there's an actual reason to play with everyone, I'm just playing Sim City as a singleplayer game and am managing all my regions.
I think it's possible that because I'm doing singleplayer, I'm not getting as many commuters to go across the region. I'm still not feeling like the transit system works at full capacity when you're by yourself.
I've logged 60 hours into the game before taking my break, and I guess I can't really say it was a disappointing 60 hours. Having to switch servers every day at launch was great for the gaming ADD, and it had the nice side effect of never getting far enough to be completely frustrated with the end gameplay....that city to city traffic did get horrible really quickly though. Watching your town develop in this game is still miles beyond the previous iterations in the series, shame about the gameplay breaking down and the city size being so small.
I guess what I'm trying to say is....invite to new region? What server are we on? The name's Fiatil on Origin. I'm going to try the single player method for a bit and see how it all feels now.
