I haven't played pokemon since Red, so I feel pretty out of it, and it's pretty intimidating to get back into the series; it's made even worse by the fact that when I played Red I was in middle school, so I was just playing the story and never got hardcore into the game (stats team design and such). Is there a good site or guide on getting me up to date with the additions/basics and what is required to make a good team and such. I want to get D/P so I'm trying to relearn the tricks of the pokemon trade. This thread is really interesting, but still over my head, any suggestions?
Man, reading Cortez's posts just make my mind want to scream out and explode.
It's kind of making me not want to get back into pokemon
It is not that bad honestly, it is still readable although the style is kind of irritating. But than again I used to visit Gamefaqs so maybe I built up a tolerance for it.
But if it bothers you that much maybe asking him to clean up his posts would be better than say, being a total dick about it immediately.
*sigh* the next pokemon games better have shinies more often.. like 1/100.... o ya!
One every 100 wild pokemons? Uh...no thanks. You will battle more than 10,000 wild pokemons in your main quest to Elite Four. Getting so many shiny pokemons in a normal playthrough kills all pride of catching one. Might as well have a 50% chance, and be like gender.
1/8192 is high, but I would complain more about the rarity loss than enjoy that I have more, if it was raised. It's fine as it is.
ok heres an idea then. how about one area in the whole game like that after you beat elite four where you can catch 50 different pokemon and every 1/100 was a shiny? the 50 pokemon wouldnt be exclusive to the area either. that seems fair doesnt it??
In all the time i've been playing Pokemon, I've only caught one shiny pokemon (it was also the only one i've ever encountered) a shiny Sharpedo. I was pretty dang proud of it. I know it's hard to catch them, but I woul dprefer they stay the rarity they are now, as it really increases your pride to catch one.

It wasn't that bad until he said roflcopter.
He's probably watching us right now.
So... how 'bout them Pokeymans?
I'd be less hesitant to pick the new ones up if they just actually put every pokemon in one game and ditched not only the two versions deal but having to buy the old games to actually get everything. Yeah yeah, online trading, but...meh.
And also, this one time in Silver, I found a place where wild Smeargle were super common. only place to find them. And I never found that place again. I still search for it sometimes. It was really weeirdd. There was a lot of buggy stuff about Gold and Silver.

Getting all of the versions and playing through them is most of the fun. Plus, I have an older brother who always buys the opposite version I do anyway, so I don't have to worry about that.
I think online might ruin it a bit like it did Animal Crossing. It was fun at first but ultimately made the game far too easy.
I guess the truth is I don't have much choice. The DS and the PS2 are my lifeblood until I eventually get a next gen system, so the big profile releases (primarily for the DS I suppose now that god of war II is done with) are all I've got.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but why the hell hasn't Nintendo created a Pokemon MMO with the Gamecube look but the GBA/DS feel? i.e. random battles, but with full 3D world graphics as you'd expect.
The only thing I can think is holding them back is the way they approach online stuff. Friend codes indeed.
Oh, hey, look at that, Pichu can learn Scheme. Hmm.
Does that make Light Ball Pikachu even better or is his SA already maxed out when he's holding the Light Ball?
Light Ball doubles it Special Attack, putting above Alakazams.
But would Scheme still have an effect on that (making it even higher) or would that move just be useful for Raichu (who can't use the Light Ball)?
Yes, items like Thick Club, Light Ball, and Soul Dew don't act as stat modifiers. Technically, a Pikachu holding Light Ball, with its Special Attack maxed out would have 8 times its orignal special attack.
In case you were wondering, this how stat modifiers work. You can only raise a Stat six stages. What is a stage you ask? A stage is half of its orignal stat added on (starts at 400, after one stage is 600). If you're clever, you've figured out that a pokemon's maxed out stat (like Belly Drum) is original stat times 4. There are moves that raise stats by one stage (Howl, Calm Mind) and two stages (Swords Dance, Tail Glow).
I hope that made sense.

Well, I beat LeafGreen over the weekend. Twas enjoyable. I also found myself a shiny Unown (sp?) I think in the T shape.
The first shiny I've ever seen, and I can't help but feel its only 1/26th the value.
Quick question: Are unown shaped the same in Japan?

1/28th the value actually.
They added a ? and ! Shape in R/S.
Which was funny because you couldn't find it anywhere until LG/FR.
Oh and since i'm here, I found lvl 5 Shiny Slakoth very early on in Ruby once. To bad I had zero interest in using it.
Also a Shiny Spinda and Lombre. So it's Shiny Slaking, Ludicolo and Spinda sitting around in LG now.

Btw is it true the only reason they stopped at 493 characters for D/P is so that they could fit in the alternate sprites for Wormmadam and the Gastrodon line? Is there some limit on a DS cart that can only handle 500 sprites max or something (I would assume not since there's also different sprites for Shinies, male/female etc., but it's still a weird number to stop at).
My first Shiny was a brown Rhyhorn in the Safari Zone. And I caught him! I was so goddamned pleased with myself. Unfortunately, almost no one I knew gave a shit, so I was unable to crow properly about my triumph.
Them: "Shiny? So its very strong or has special moves, or something?"
Me: "It's supposed to be grey, but this one is brown!"
Them: "Sure. Whatever."
Me: "BROWN! IN THE SAFARI ZONE! DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD THAT IS?"
My brother does care, but the only reaction he gives me is a quiet resentment of my shiny Rhyhorn and Ratacade. I, in turn covet the light ball he aquired of a Pikachu without even knowing it was rare. I think I like my shinies better, though.
Oh! I also have a shiny Apology Zigagoon from the in store Ruby and Saphire berry glitch fix. But he doesn't really count.

Use proper english, Jesus.
Also it took me forever but I finally beat Wattson. I will never, ever try to beat him with all flying types ever again.

At least he appears to be confining his posts to this thread.

But I know all my friends will be playing this to death.
And the prospect of online battling does seem pretty bad ass.
Well, it comes out near my birthday, maybe I'll ask for it.
1: Not until beating the Elite four at least. You also have to have seen every Pokemon in the Sinnoh Dex (not hard).
2: Dunno.
Pal Park is accessable after getting the National Pokedex, and the Daycare is somewhere inbetween the second and third badge, according to Gamefaqs.
hard to use a friggin pocket knife to wedge the thing loose from the Wii controller port after getting Jirachi off the bonus disc.
I dont intend to use that thing again until i have colloseum and XD finished.
Finished my Fire Red runthrough (at least up to unlocking the transfer function to RSE.) Basically just need to get Zapdos and Mewtwo and im done.
Moltres took me forever. had the sucker to 1hp, paralyzed... and still used like 30 ultra balls trying to catch him.
