Btw is it true the only reason they stopped at 493 characters for D/P is so that they could fit in the alternate sprites for Wormmadam and the Gastrodon line? Is there some limit on a DS cart that can only handle 500 sprites max or something (I would assume not since there's also different sprites for Shinies, male/female etc., but it's still a weird number to stop at).
My first Shiny was a brown Rhyhorn in the Safari Zone. And I caught him! I was so goddamned pleased with myself. Unfortunately, almost no one I knew gave a shit, so I was unable to crow properly about my triumph.
Them: "Shiny? So its very strong or has special moves, or something?"
Me: "It's supposed to be grey, but this one is brown!"
Them: "Sure. Whatever."
Me: "BROWN! IN THE SAFARI ZONE! DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD THAT IS?"
My brother does care, but the only reaction he gives me is a quiet resentment of my shiny Rhyhorn and Ratacade. I, in turn covet the light ball he aquired of a Pikachu without even knowing it was rare. I think I like my shinies better, though.
Oh! I also have a shiny Apology Zigagoon from the in store Ruby and Saphire berry glitch fix. But he doesn't really count.
We understand.

I doubt that has anything to do with it.
I think it was more along the lines of:
Programmer Drone A: So how many do we have now?
Programmer Drone B: 492. Wait, no, 493. I added a spot to that one. And a fin.

Well I read it on Serebii (usually pretty reliable) and it seems plausible considering you get exactly 500 when you take Wormmadam and Gastrodon+prevo's alternate sprites into consideration. I guess they really see those forms as seperate Pokemon (which is plausible, considering even the type changes in Wormmadam's case and the different Gastrodons look varied enough I guess). It's just weird they didn't do that before, with Unown for example which counted as just one.

Do those Gastrodon froms have different stats as well (like the defense bonus for females and attack bonus for males) or is the variation purely cosmetical?
Also, before Gastrodon was revealed I was SO SURE Shellos was gonna be a Lapras prevo. He completely looks the part. But alas it wasn't to be

Well, consider that if you're going on the 'can only handle 500 sprites' theory, that gets shot down by the fact that there's also an additional 27 sprites for Unown that you aren't taking into account.

@vgreminders - Don't miss out on timed events in gaming! @gamefacts - Totally and utterly true gaming facts on the regular!
But does the 493 include the "event" Pokemon: Celebi, Mew, Deoxys, Jirachi, Manaphy, Darkrai and Shaymin? Because that's seven right there. I thought they always referred to the number available without including the event pokemon.

nope, 493 is the national dex, including the events. I believe there are 2 events this time around. 1 normal type, that has some special ability that lets you change its type, and 1 ghost dragon type. I might be wrong on that second one.

No, the two event are Darkrai and Shaymin, they're Dark and Grass type. You;re thinking of the Pokemon God critter and the Spriritomb I think.
By "event" I mean you have to go to a special event hosted by Nintendo or, in the case of Jirachi and Manaphy, have another game or preorder.

Yeah, I think it's Manaphy (does Phione count?), Darkrai, Shaymin, and Arceus as events.
I was wondering if there was a reason that they stopped at 493, rather than the nice, round number of 500. Of course, Phione is proof that they are certifiably insane, so meh.
My friend went to the last one and all they gave out was the tickets for FireRed and Leaf Green. Nothing for Ruby/Sapphire and Emerald and certainly nothing for R/B/Y or G/S/C.
Damn you all to hell. These threads made me buy emerald yesterday.
I have started to plan out my team, and atm it looks like I will get
Froslass
Swampert
Shifty
Gallade
Aggron
Salamance
Any comments? I heard Aggron is really a UU pokemon, but then again I am not looking into competitive play, and his resistances together with a mixture of attacks including thunderbolt seems like a decent idea.
I am having a slightly hard time grasping all the strategies, it's pretty overwhelming to check the strategies and stuff on Serebii.net. For example, for my swampbert I get this suggestion for a moveset:
Attacks:
Curse
Rest
Earthquake
HP Flying OR Rock Slide
but for single play I feel much more tempted to just go with something like Surf, Earthquake and Ice Beam. It seems hard to find stuff that gives an even strength, and not just the ultra specific strats for OU competition. Then again I guess pretty much any moveset can beat the single player game...

Well that makes sense, but I mean, can't you catch Mew and all the other ones on the newest versions as well, anyway?

That would rock so fucking hard I would just completely die.
Nintendo seems to play it simple when it comes to online, so I doubt online will have loads of depth. It would be great to see Nintendo host online Tournaments and award event Pokemon, but it's highly unlikely.
And can anyone answer this: are the beauty/etc. contests making a return and if so, is there any thing being added to them. I didn't give them much thought in R/S, so I was curious about their fate.

You need a Membership Pass for Darkrai, Oak's Letter for Shaymin and Heaven's Pipe for Arceus. They're all items given away at events.
edit: I HATE event items. God damn Nintendo, drop this shit. Another game I can buy but your events suck and are at like 3 cities max.
Only in older versions, but that bug has since been fixed. Gave you Shaymin too btw.
In other words, Gamefreak sees it as illegal. So it still counts as an event Pokemon along with Mew, Jirachi, Celebi, Deoxys, Arseus and Shaymin.

That is the greatest thing ever.
And our version will probably be able to detect the bugged one and not be able to trade it. They're bastards that way.
In other words, is the number of legitimate Mews in the world a static number, or are new ones caught?
