A Provisional [chat]

JacobkoshJacobkosh Gamble a stamp.I can show you how to be a real man!Moderator mod
The last ten pages of the last chat thread were one of the stupidest things it's been my unprivilege to see in my time here - so relentlessly unpleasant and astonishingly, jaw-droppingly un-self-aware that the other D&D mods and I have discussed just going down page after page after page and infracting almost every single participant. While I personally think that would save us a lot of valuable time over the next couple of months, it is a lot of work, and in the meantime, @surrealitycheck doesn't have a place to post dog gifs. And that's the real tragedy here.

So: this is not a thread for talking about how your favorite departed forumer is a martyr to the cause of something-or-other, nor is a thread for being an asshole in the guise of dropping truth bombs. Being jailed does not make you Nelson Mandela.

Most of you are at least nominally adults. As the one moderator who tries to keep up with the chat thread, I'd like to see better judgment being exercised.

The threadban feature is going to be employed liberally from now on. If having a functioning chat thread means turning it into a private thread for Bogart, Elki, Feral, Thomamelas, RMS Oceanic, BobCesca and I to trade movie posters, book recommendations, and Star Trek trivia, well, that actually sounds rather pleasant to me at the moment.

    Speaking of Star Trek.

I spent the afternoon watching Voyager season three and can only wonder why Janeway seems so determined to keep the crew stuck in the Delta Quadrant. I understand the real world logistical reasons about how they can't end the show early, but take False Profits. Here we see the ship encounter the Barzan wormhole from The Price and they have an actual facutal we are going to get home no bones about it plan.

And instead of just arresting or ignoring the Ferengi and having done with it, Janeway makes dumb decision after dumb decision, eventually destablizing the wormhole in a fool's errand to prove something about the prime directive or some shit.

I'm used to out-thinking TV characters, but I feel like the writer's weren't even trying on this one.

The Prime Directive is the stupidest thing about Star Trek.

I wouldn't say that is necessarily the case. Having a rule where you don't go around fucking up other cultures isn't so dumb.

But the way the writers didn't seem to ever understand how the PD was supposed to work? That I would accept is the stupidest thing about Star Trek. Other than the existence of the episode "Threshold".

boo for still being at work

also: got to try out two new board games last night

for anyone who has played Core Worlds, what is the big appeal? It seemed very "ok". Not bad. But not really good either.

on the plus side, Le Havre: The Inland Port turned out to be a fun little economic game (for 2 players only) that takes 30 minutes or less. There aren't enough games that fit into that kind of time slot.

Season 2 of Voyager was surprisingly strong, actually. As were parts of season 1. I am rewatching my lesser loved Treks with a critical eye to keep my brain awake during my long intellectual exile of underemployment.

The Prime Directive is the stupidest thing about Star Trek.

The original 60s version of the Prime Directive is great. It was a very simple "no Vietnam" rule - the characters couldn't use their superior technology to destabilize or change the course of a less-advanced civilization. It was a critique of American military policy and our habit of using smaller countries as pawns.

By the 90s, though, it had turned into "we have to let this asteroid murder this unsuspecting planet because EVOLUTION" which is unspeakably retarded

Oh yeah, I was just talking about the application.

Generally speaking, it would be useful to have rules governing when and how you're allowed to interact with civilizations that don't have space travel.
