Anything that gets people out of constantly grinding CoF p.1 and into any of the other dungeons is a Good Move.

I might try to log in today for a little bit and see how my knee holds up. But yes the surgery is over and I've been home for two days doped up on painkillers woo!
Hi, relatively new to GW2 and barely got a level 40 thief. I've been trucking it along solo but curious about going on dungeon raids. Since I don't have a guild, is there a dungeon group finder tool in game that is usable by lurkers such as myself?
Also according to the OP, I should have run into two story mode dungeons: Ascalonian Catacombs 30 (35) and
Caudecus's Manor 40 (45). However, that has not happened yet. Any advice is appreciated.

When you hit certain levels, like level 30, you should get in game mail from your race's mentor that directs you to the dungeons. You won't run into the dungeons yourself by just doing the personal story - there's like two concurrent storylines going on, one that deals with Zhaitan through the personal story and the other that deals with Destiny's Edge through the dungeons (story paths).
http://gw2lfg.com is what most people use to find pug dungeon groups. It's great and works well. An in-game LFG will be coming sometime this year.
If you are looking to join a guild, you're welcome to join NICE Running around solo is dreadfully mind numbing after awhile.
I feel like I'm about to have a heart attack. Crunch time has never been so... crunchy.
Good news is, I've really earned this vacation I'm about to take off on. Bad news is, I dunno what Internet availability is gonna be like next week. If I'm conspicuously absent, y'all will know why. (Sorry Brokk, no more story dungeons till next Sunday)
Saturday at 6pm PST (9pm EST) I'll be hosting a guild event. That's an hour before guild missions. It will be a zone scavenger hunt. I'll ask 10 questions with each question worth 1g each. The question's answers will be somewhere in the zone that I select. The final 10th question, will also have a prize of a Mini Snow Leopard.
Cute. The expected value of playing the guild lottery is independent of the total entries.
Also, I've apparently been playing it optimally, without knowing.
Yeah, we've mentioned it before. 50/50 lottery. The other half goes to fund other events (like the scavenger hunt I'm doing tomorrow) and the sPvP Server. If people want to change how it's handled, just let us know.

I have no issue with how its handled, I'm just amused that the amount of money I can expect to win is the same whether there are 10 entries or 100.
It's also positive. I WISH I could get odds like these at a casino.

What math are you doing? At 10 Entries the winner gets 5 Gold, at 100 Entries the Winner gets 50 Gold.
Follow-up question about story dungeons. I'm assuming I need more than just myself to get them done? If so, how does one go about it?
Like Geod said, http://www.gw2lfg.com/ is an awesome website (especially while we wait for them to get the in-game LFG system up and running). You can filter for what you are interested in, then send an invite request to the party in-game. Because parties are cross-server, it is usually not too hard to find a group. Story modes will take longer to get started though as most people only run them once.

Uh, correct math? For 10 entries winning 5 gold the expected value is 1/10 * 5, or 0.5. For 100 entries winning 50 gold, the expected value is 1/100 * 50, or 0.5.
I believe this may be a conflict of semantics regarding "the amount of money I can expect to win is the same." It's not that he will win the same amount of cash, but when the "expected" is thrown in there the context and the solution change.

However, while it is great for solo play (being able to take supply camps solo is pretty good imho) it's not that great on wuvwuv night. Nothing stays alive long enough for the condition dps to really matter, zerg fights are too fast and chaotic for getting epidemic set up and all that...
So what should I change for wuvwuv night?
1) I would rather not change equipment.
2) I definitely don't want to have to adjust trait points each time. But switching major traits is fine.
3) Utilities are obviously the easiest to change.

While racing light mechs, your Urbanmech comes in second place, but only because it ran out of ammo.
When I go into wuv intending to play with a group I always make sure to put 30 points in soul-reaping for Foot in the Grave. That 3 seconds of stability is absolutely vital when zergs clash and you can't always count on getting stability from someone else. I know you said you didn't want to adjust your traits but every time I go into wuv without that trait I always find myself porting out to get it.

The fact you can get a 3 or more sec stability on 7 (or 8, forget what it is now) CD is just plain mean.

This is correct. Discounting for a minute any "bonus" thrown in (usually 5 gold), the expected value of buying a ticket in a lottery where a winner is guaranteed to be chosen is the price of the ticket, minus the percentage house take. In our case, 50%, so half a gold is the expected value of the results of buying a lottery ticket.
"Expected value" is a statistical term that is used to describe the weighted average of all possible outcomes in a situation involving probability.
For instance, let's say you have a 60% chance of being given $100 for your birthday (if your grandparents remember to send it) and a 40% chance of receiving $0 (If they forget). The expected value of your birthday gift is ($100 * 60% + $0 * 40%) = $60.
In our lottery, if there are 10 tickets purchased and the pot is 5 gold, each ticket gives you a 1/10 chance of winning 5 gold, and a 9/10 chance of winning 0 gold.
So the expected value of lottery ticket in that case is (5 gold * 1/10 + 0 gold * 9/10) = .5 gold
Now look at the case where there are 100 entries and a pot of 50 gold:
(50 gold * 1/50 + 0 gold * 49/50) = .5 gold
So yes, the expected value of a ticket is the same regardless of the size of the pot.
The confusion here is some people were discussing expected value and some were discussing pot size, without realizing that "expected value" means something in particular in statistics.
However, your odds of winning and your happiness if you do win are entirely dependent on the number of entries.

The fact the game launched without a viable lfg tool is an abomination. I will concede its an argument that's been rehashed many times over though.
reverse said gw2lfg is an abomination. It is not. It is very helpful due to the lack of dungeon finder in game.
