Editing posts causes the quote tags to break

CasualCasual Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle Flap Flap Flap Registered User regular
Like the title says I've noticed in the last couple of days that going back and editing a typo or whatever in a post breaks the quote tags in the post and I get one big block of text instead of quote trees.

I'm only noticing this on my work PC so far, it uses IE9 V:9.08112.16421

Right, even though I did check beforehand to see if this had already been posted I missed the post right below this one somehow.

I'll ask that this thread stays open anyway though because I am having other problems too, the formatting on the right hand side of the page has gone crazy for me and hovering the cursor over thread links in the subforums cases the entire box containing the link to vanish.

I'll post pictures of this later tonight when I get home.

I was wondering what was causing so many broken quote tags.

    Edit:test

EDIT 2: doesn't seem to be breaking it for me on firefox 19.02

That post was made from IE 8.0.6001.18702
Also from work. And our internet is terrible as hell today thank you Cox.

    If any of that helps.

Possibly related, but when I edit a post from I also get an error saying the discussion could not be found for commenting or something like that. It's been doing that long before the formatting problems though. Not sure if it's related to our proxy or just using an outdated version of IE.
Also starting a few weeks ago Geth's avatar stopped loading, both in his posts and in the tiny one used for awesomes and such.

edit: this is all from work. From home everything is fine.

@Casual yes I have had both the quoting problem, and the weird forum formatting issue that your screenshot shows.

The weird thread formating thing happens when Internet Explorer sets the PA forums in compatibility view, which it will do automaticly if some kind of error forces IE to refresh the page... at least, that's what it is on IE 8, and there should be a little button next to the URL with the picture of a torn page you can click on to fix. It also can be set from the tools menu. I suspect the solution for IE 9 would be similar.

Also have the broken tags problem, which can pop up whether I start editing right after posting, or refresh first and/or come back to edit later.

[b]EDIT[/b] ...and I have now created the [i]perfect[/i] example of this bug!

@IcyLiquid Could this be caused by this commit? I don't claim to be familiar with PHP, but it looks like the default format for Garden comments is "Html". Maybe that check is using the default format when submitting an edited post (it seems to accept #Form_Format's value for the initial comment) and clobbering the posts format?

    EDIT: Testing

That's the exact commit that I think is causing it too, yes. I just haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

It won't fix old ones. New edits shouldn't break formatting, though.

FYI I'm on IE 8 when this happens. Not by choice, IE8 is what they have at work.

My IE 8 mysteriously fixed itself after the last round of windows updates, have you applied those?

    Guys. GUYS.

Its a code thing. Its not a browser thing. It wont "magically fix itself", ever. EVER.
So just wait. I will get to it.

    Just.... stop.

    I'm not so sure now!

It seems to be related to certain people and quoting, might be the environment they're working with?

    http://forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/comment/26332485/#Comment_26332485

When I quoted his code it broke the new lines and quotes, seems like it might be related to something else entirely than code, we'd all be experiencing it, wouldn't we?

When I edit a post I get "Failed to find discussion for commenting." Then all tags are destroyed, formatting etc.,.

As a result, I have to actually get my posts right the first time, and correct any egregious spelling errors while properly researching my wild baseless internet assertions. So it's a wash. Sounds like @IcyLiquid is on the case though! Huzzah.

Pretty much the same for me. Instead of just typing out a bunch of words and then looking back for spelling/grammer errors, I'm now checking for mistakes and actually using the preview button to make sure it looks the right way... This "bug" is slowing increasing the quality of my initial posts, as now I can only go back to edit if there are no tags in the post to begin with.

I've always gotten the "Failed to find discussion for commenting" but it didn't start breaking all the formatting tags until about a month ago.

I'm not sure if editing posts has also broken hyperlinks or if this is a separate issue, but all of the hyperlinks I've created in this post just point back to the same page.

Edit: Well, the hyperlinks in the OP of that thread.
