This one is particularly funny, because I don't know what "riding dirty" actually means either. Up to this point I've been assuming from context that it meant "driving with a gun" but now that I think about it, "driving with illegal drugs" makes somewhat more sense.

It turns out a lot of non-white people also don't give a fuck about drug culture.

It means both. If you're driving a car while there is something illegal inside it you're "ridin' dirty". Drugs, firearms...doesn't matter.

    I call bullshit.

Upon hearing the phrase riding dirty years ago Tycho would have immediately looked it up, stored, and sorted it in his Vault of Meaning.

My whiteness doesn't change the fact I grew up in east Houston, so I absolutely know what "ridin' dirty" means, along with most other "urban slang", as you jive ass turkeys might call it.

Then again, I get the distinct feeling more people actually know what it means, but would rather claim they didn't because it makes them "cooler" to not have any knowledge regarding something they consider beneath them.

@Comradebot, Deerbrook and Humble aren't exactly like Third and Fifth Ward; in fact, there was an all-white, prep-school gang out of Kingwood in the late 90's and early 2000's that summed it up rather nicely:

    The K-Wood Krackers.

And no, dear readers, that shit is not made up.

I think it best in general not to have everyone throw down Cred in the thread.

Don't need no blood spilt like the crips vs. bloods fiasco of '06.

I like the sort of meta-joke that Tycho's been fairly insistent for years that all of that stuff is behind him, and the second Gabe shows curiosity he's like yeah I have some right now.

East Houston, not Northeast or Southeast, east. I'm from No' Sho', beyotch. Though we're still a step ahead of our neighbors, Channelview and Cloverleaf. We fondly referred to it in high school as "an upscale ghetto". It wasn't "Menace II Society", but there were at least two knife fights while I was in attendance in the cafeteria, and hearing gunshots at night is not uncommon. Yes, it's not 5th Ward, but it's a far cry from Deerbrook (a name itself which attracts white people to it, and influences them to seek to smell like breakfast).

Though I guess I should clarify: it's not technically Houston. My mailing address says Houston, but the city limits completely encircle us as they've so far avoided annexing us. Why? Because we're too poor, and would be an economic drain on the city.

Gabe is so terrified of this it's almost adorable. His qualms with drugs are perfectly understandable; people have lost entire relationships and families over the broken dreams that are substance abuse.

Except weed. You can't even overdose on that shit, what the goof. He's already put himself in a lot more danger just from the use of his daily anti-depressants

EDIT: I'd really like to see it legalized already so we can get professional diagnosis on which type does what. I mean most people don't even know the difference between a Sativa and Indica, and we're talking folks who have been toking up for years.

That is a terrible standard to upheld and I feel it is very important that you know what you're putting in your body, especially if it has the potential to mix with any other medications fatally.

Not particularly. Is it that hard to imagine that people can and do feign ignorance to feel socially accepted among their peers, or did you just wake up this morning feeling a tad confrontational? It's very likely no one here is doing it, I just threw it out as a musing possibility.

But clearly, I just have a hard time imagining that people can have backgrounds different than mine. It's the only logical explanation... you jive ass turkey.

The first sentence? A joking yes and no. I did grow up in a rougher area of east Houston: not the roughest, but the part about the knife fights and gunshots at night was not a joke. But it wasn't 5th Ward or the television version of Compton, CA by any means (and I've never been to Compton, so no idea what the real one is like).

The second? Like I said, a musing possibility. I'm not accusing anyone or anything like that, just some innocent pondering. Mostly funny that so many people seemed to take offense to it, didn't think it be a touchy subject in the slightest.

Who seemed to take offense to it? I see several people who knew the term but not it's meaning, and chose now (when they encounter it as the punchline to a joke they're expected to get) to find out. A pretty reasonable time to find out.

And it's not just a matter of where you grew up - there were several terms for that where I grew up, but none of them were riding dirty. And even living in a suburb full of old people (what passes for "good part" in Saginaw) I still knew all of them because white kids in good schools tried harder to be "street" than anyone actually living there. A lot of those terms are very regional.

Now you're just outright lying, or you're a giant goose. How is this:

Not accusing people in here? Are you currently polling people on the street about this phrase? Do you work for Jimmy Kimmel?

Not accusing people in here? Are you currently polling people on the street about this phrase? Do you work for Jimmy Kimmel?

Then who did I accuse? Every single person who may legitimately not know? And since when is musing the same as accusing? The only way I'm a "giant goose" or "liar" is if you take the wild supposition that I'm incapable of grasping "people have other backgrounds" as stone cold fact.

I made what I honestly don't see as an inflammatory post, you attacked me, and you've already closed off your mind to any possibility other than "liar" or "giant goose". I said it was a muse, but even considering that possibility would mean maybe you took out whatever frustration you've got going on right now on another forum goer without proper consideration and it's easier to just go "nah, he's a dick" than to admit to yourself that maybe you're acting like one without justification.

Gods, a guy can't think aloud in a forum without someone jumping down his throat. You'd think I just raped and murdered a litter of kittens, and showed pictures of it happening to a bunch of kids.
