I never finished the Conrad quest in ME1, due to the Bioware Point of No Return which I let slip up on me, so I never got him in ME2. One nice thing about my mega playthrough will be righting that wrong.
And remember, the ultimate level cap in the first Mass Effect is 60.
Import Lv. 1-49 into ME2 = Bump to Lv. 2
Import Lv. 50-59 into ME2 = Bump to Lv. 3
Import Lv. 60 into ME2 = Bump to Lv. 5
Though honestly, since the cap in ME2 is 30, and nearly the entire game is composed of "side missions", you shouldn't have a problem hitting 30 anyway. Especially if you have the DLC (free or otherwise).
What is the easter egg in ME3 for ME1 completionists?
I must have missed it (I certainly was an ME1 completionist though).
The sidequest involving fixing the Medi-Gel Dispensers at the Citadel Docks. There were two goals, fixing those machines, and finding a dude that was extolling the virtues of Cerberus... after you know what happened.
The dude being Conrad. Shepard's entire conversation with him is one big call back to the ME1 sidequests and characters. Plus his ambient dialog before the end of the quest is hilarious as well.

Oh that, ok yeah.
Conrad is sort of a caricature of a BW player, the whole "Oh, I like to ask every question and sometimes I forget which ones I've asked."

How important is it that I complete a lot of side quests in ME1? I heard that ideally I want to get my Shepard to level 50 to unlock things in ME2 but I'm at level 40 now and just really sick of repeating the same tasks over and over. Am I missing out on much if I just go straight into the virmire missions now?
If you plan on carrying the same Shepard through all three games I recommended doing all the side quests. It will create some additional content/dialog in future games. Or if your Shep 'ain't got time for dat', just go for it. There is no real wrong way to play Commander Shepard.
Yeah I realized it's not just that one payoff, there are several side missions where you see the people in later games. It just depends on whether that appeals to you or not, because it's not like you (generally) get whole new missions surrounding these people, you just get to see them again and maybe chat, and at most they ask you to talk to someone else to help them out.
I do think there's one wrong way to play Shepard, and that is to not complete the Conrad Vernor quest with either a renegade or paragon conversation choice. If Conrad Vernor doesn't appear in every one of your Mass Effect games, you are a Mass Effect criminal.
I didn't agree with this until I managed it (first couple playthroughs his quest got bugged for me)

Yes but if you're a completionist then
Conrad actually turns out to be useful!
Which just adds to the hilarity.
Even Commander Shepard's fanboys are awesome.

The things I know you have to have done
To get the entire Conrad dialog and the war assets are
1) Complete the Matriarch writings gather quest
2) Get the Elkoss Combine license
3) Do the fetch quest in Feros for that one scientist who asked you to pick up his stuff while you're there (I forget the guy's name, but Conrad knows him)
4) Save Jenna from CSEC using her as an operative
I didn't know about the 'rich' achievement, it's not mentioned in the dialog but I suppose it might be a hidden unlock.

I don't know, but not punching that reporter whenever you can is just plain wrong.
Unlocked and played around with the Turian Saboteur. Fun class, though his powers seem mediocre for the most part. Really hope they find a middle ground for Sabotage in the next installment of Mass Effect Multiplayer, because having such a situational skill eating up a power slot is... less than ideal.
Of course, I am confused as to why it's limited to either controlling synthetics or overheating guns since most "organic" enemies you fight are loaded to the teeth with cybernetic implants.
I pretty much universally play Paragon Shep and I always punch the reporter
Always
One of the few regrets I have with Mass Effect is that I can't invite that reporter for a tour of the Normandy, drop her on a Hazard planet and then have the Normandy hover over her so she can stare for a few moments the freshly painted middle finger I had put on the belly of the Normandy when we swung by the Citadel to pick her up before leaving her to die.
Also in this scenario Femshep would have the option to order Joker to flip things the bird.
As I said, it's very situational. I mean, yeah, it's good when turrets come up and just good against Geth in general. But then Reapers or Collectors come up, and the best you can do is overheat some mook or lieutenant's gun.

I would have much preferred Al-Jilani on the Normandy than Chobot, even if her and Shepard never got along.

Only if it lets me airlock her.
I actually didn't mind Chobot but I largely ignored her. Mostly due to the uncanny valley thing. Just... creepy.

I've been playing him a fair bit lately. He's only so-so on his own. Where he really shines is as a support character. Sabotage is fun against synthetics and alright as a stagger against organics, but that 50% damage increase for tech powers at rank 6 is terrific. Same for homing mines and the increase to damage against armor. Put the Saboteur on the same team as a Paladin or FQE and you're looking at some really nice synergy.
Killjoy Shep does not punch reporters, stab Batarians in the back with electric tools saying they work too hard, or push people out of skyscrapers with the remark how 'bout goodbye.
It's hard being that straight edge, but such an unerring moral compass pays off come the ending.
Oh man, I missed the Asari Huntress. With a Geth Juggernaut specced for tanking and a Vorcha toting a flamer, we locked shit down on a Firebase Ghost Platinum match. I worried that the Huntress' squishiness would be a liability (particularly since as we all know, Plat isn't really enjoyable), but with Juggs providing support, things just melted.
I guess I Just like the idea of cloak buffing power damage to silly levels, but it's just a really enjoyable kitt.

I've actually been having a fair amount of fun on Platinum lately. With the right team it becomes much less like work and more like any other wave 9 or 10 of Gold. Plus you can bring out all those classes/weapon combos you'd otherwise feel guilty about playing on lower levels.

Yeah, when platinum feels good, it's can be enjoyable. But that bar of entry is higher, and while searching for games I was directly put into 3 straight games of missile-glitching folks, so it's also more likely to be filled with that sort of tampering.
I think perhaps the Jugg alone makes me more willing to wade into Plat, as part of my frustration was always how easily Boss Rush could just knock a team totally down. The Jugg means less situations where you either immediately spend some missiles or you're about to enter a total party wipe.
But juggling an endless stream of bosses and lower level back-up can definitely get you pumped up.

Chobot's character looks like she's storing nuts in her cheeks for winter.
It was just such a random ass cameo, and most assuredly a bucks for likeness deal.
I realllllly hope they got their money's worth.
They spent money on that rather than, I dunno, putting Jennifer Hale's face in the game.
Marketing! The true occult science.
Why put Hale's face in the game?
Just because she's a good voice actress doesn't mean the characters she voices should look like her. (not that I approve of that Chobot bullshit, but still)
Oh, I forgot to mention, I unlocked the Turian Sentinel and the Drell adept. Either of these good/terrible classes? I tried the sentinel out a bit, seemed alright.
My Shepard never punches the reporter because he's in a representative function and the damn thing is being broadcasted, because he respects freedom of the press, because he doesn't employ violence against civilians, and because answering all her questions in earnest is so much more satisfying as a retort.

Is it known what triggers it?
Let me tell you about the time I got a phantom sync killed by an atlas.
Or a turret to mow down half a wave.
Or a bomber to stagger fuck his own team.
Why would you ever claim such a power is mediocre? It's so much fun.
