I was playing last night, and got into a PuG for The Black-Fires quest in the North Downs. That group didn't last long when our lowest-level member, a Guardian, decided he could rush four elites.
After he dropped, I put out a call for more members. The only classes interested were hunters... so, a fellowship of six hunters (25-34) set out on the quest.
That is one of the strangest yet coolest fellowships I've been in... Six hunters can do a truckload of damage, and six traps carefully placed can manage incoming mobs pretty effectively. Normal mobs were dropping like flies, and elites were dropping like slightly larger flies... seriously. Everything we merely looked at became a pincushion.
Only problem with a fellowship like that is when it goes wrong, it can really, really go wrong. Just before we reached the last quest goal, someone went the wrong way, and we pulled about 5-6 elites on us unprepared. That was an ugly scene.
But while it was good, it was awesome...
I ran around in a similar situation last night, only it was a fellowship of 4 champs. Watching the aggro get pulled every which way as we all laid down AOE attacks was hilarious
Just another reason that I just can't wait till SoE, it's awesome that they are giving you champs tools to control your agro without nerfing the fuck out of your damage dealing.
I'm level 9 now, the depth of the game is starting to sink in. The quests are alot of fun so far, even though I may get sick of them down the line. Do the quests vary as you gain higher level? I burned out from WoW because of nothing to do (or rather, nothing that interested me), but LotRO has me completely sucked in.
Oh, Aurin, thanks again for the add to the society.

haha no problem man, just glad I caught you online.
And I'm still enjoying the quests, even if it's the same old "Kill 10, bring me back bodyparts/insignias/etc." It might be because I'm sucked into all the lore though. And I'm playing at my own pace, slow as a snail. 8-)

While the gathering quests aren't the best, I still find them more interesting than other MMOs I've played...
LOTRO: Please, please, help us. We're cold and starving and weak...
ME: What can I do to help?
LOTRO: There are some boars and wolves nearby... Their meat would feed us and their skins warm us, and make the region safer as well...
ME: Oh, man, how can I not help? I'm off!!!
But other MMOs...
MMO: You, there... Go fetch me some spider eyes and bear toenails.
ME: Umm... sure, but... why do you want those thi...
MMO: SHUT UP! Just go get them. Bring them straight back to me. Don't talk with anyone else about this.
ME: Ummm....
MMO: Do it, and hurry. I've got, ah, things to do.
Okay, maybe it's not quite like that, but it seems like that to me.

I've seen the "we're starving and cold" reason for a quest in every single MMO i've played. Including WoW.

Well, I do know exactly where hmxmoss is coming from, though. I'm not necessarily addicted to the game, perse, but I'm absolutely head-over-heels hooked on the lore, atmosphere, and community the game has thus far.
First, I could easily log in, go into the Hunter's Lodge, and sit for hours, because the guitar playing is phenomenal.
Last night, I was doing the spider den quest (the one where you get diary pages out of the spider cocoons), and as I ran by, I noticed a level 6 lore-master having a tough time, since the mobs are roughly levels 6-8. So, for the next hour, without saying a word, I'd aid him by allowing him to get the first hit (to lock his XP), then sniping them from a distance. He leveled up twice while we were down there. As I was about to quietly leave, he came up to me, bowed, and gave me 2 silver. I bowed back, and ran off, no words spoken.
The writing on the quests helps. Sure other games have similar quest plots, but the ones in LOTRO are worth reading. Plus it often integrates into the LOTR storyline without corrupting it, which adds an entirely different layer. The dialog is very well done.
I'd aid him by allowing him to get the first hit (to lock his XP), then sniping them from a distance. He leveled up twice while we were down there.
FYI:
As I understand it... (and I may have it wrong, so plz someone correct me if this is wrong)... While letting him attack first ensures he gets the XP for the kill, helping kill the mob halves the XP he receives.
Maybe at a low level, that isn't such a big deal, since you level quickly. But I don't help people now unless it looks like they might die otherwise (since repair costs from death can be high).
I think helping someone by healing them (instead of attacking the mob) doesn't hurt their XP, but don't know that for certain.

Healing cuts xp too, fyi.
Not that I really listen if someone complains about getting healed, I dont follow them around, and even at high levels one mobs xp is not a lot. You'd really have to be acting like a jackass to get a bad rep for healing people
Man, the Old Forrest is getting on my nerves. So many twisting paths and wolves and bears.
I find I'm going a little crazy trying to do all my low level quests before I move on to the higher level ones, my minstrel is 17 almost 18 and im trying to polish off all my lvl 9-12 quests. Though I'm enjoying it immensely.
I also felt like I was running out of quests to do at my level when my Captain was getting to Bree town, so I slipped over to the Shire and am doing all of their low level quests, also making an small hoard of coin, almost to 500 silver, and he's only 16.

God I wish I had that bree map last night before I spent the better part of an hour wandering aimlessly hoping to stumble upon the hunter trainer...
Now I see that there's not even a f'ing hunter trainer in bree. :x
Oh well, it did result in me finding the Auction and some dude gave me a bit of cash and I upgraded my bow. Also I wandered around Staddle for a bit and the forest south and the marshlands east.
Lordy this game is pretty. Easily the best, most foresty feeling, forest I've seen in a game, let alone an MMO. I imagine with the retail high res graphics it's only prettier. And it runs amazingly well to boot. Honestly I don't see how anyone can really complain about the graphics. For how smooth the game runs and how good it looks...yeah it's not Crysis or anything but who the hell cares. It's LOTR and it feels like LOTR.
EDIT: oh, quick question about starter area deeds. Do the quests in a starter area before an "event" (defending archet, etc) not count toward the "total quests" deed? Otherwise how would you get them? And is it worth it to wander to the other starter zones just for the deeds? (I know this has been discussed)
I'm getting online now. I'll probably be doing quests in Staddle/Combe/Bree, maybe even going to the Shire. If anyone around level 9-12 needs any aid, I'll definitely be up for doing so.

Hunter trainer, bottom left near the auction house. :P
ALSO: Make sure you turn on map notes, upper left corner of your map. It makes the world so much more friendly.
So, I still have a buch of bronze for any smiths that are just starting out. I also have a good supply of sturdy hides for any who need them. Let me know if you need them or send a letter to Beoleofu.

Man, I need to do my Great Barrows quests soon. I'm almost at level 29 now.
You and me both.
My burglar just hit 30, and I still have to do Heading West, and the quest you get after turning in the key halves. I'm in no hurry. Once I hit the North Downs I never looked back. I've got quests in the Lone Lands going green as well. I just love the North Downs so much. Plenty of solo and fellowship quests.
Where's the best place to get quests at a level 10? I'm in Brockenborings at the moment, as those awesome Mail Run quests led me there. I'm really wanting to get to level 15 before I leave for Hawaii on Sunday.

I would think... Staddle? Right outside of Bree. I think that's the right level range.
And some quests in Bree as well. There might also be quests on the way to Bree from the Shire. I haven't done much hobbit-land questing so I'm not too sure.

I actually managed to do Heading West and got half of the key with a group thanks to having a level 45 help us through, but he bailed on us after a bug screwed up one of the boss encounters. I still need to collect a few more chalices in there from some other quest.
Which reminds me: is it me, or is the in-game voice chat kind of crummy? I appreciate that it's there, but the only way I can hear people when they speak is if I turn down the sound effects and music to nothing. Of course, it could be my system too...
They need to do it like BF2, when someone talks, all the other sounds go down so that you can hear them.
I'm pretty sure that voice is on a seperate volume control, so you should be able to adjust it so that music/sound is non-zero and can still hear people speaking. Until some jackass starts yelling anyway.
That's true. I just thought the way BF2 handled it was really elegant.

I actually have the voice volume set at the highest and I can barely hear anyone unless I turn the music and sound effects all the way down. It's probably some weird thing on my own PC.
Also, I successfully completed my last two Great Barrows quests last night. The problem is that one of them leads to another quest to go back in there and kill the final boss in there. The whole thing was pretty easy since we had a level 35 guardian.

No, I have the same issue. Basically, I turn eveything down to like 25% except for voice volume, then crank my PC volume up till I can hear stuff again. It makes the voice come through clearer.
