I like the ships for all the races. They look cool while being bland enough that you would actually want to build a base on the surface instead of just going back to your ship.

You can build on your ship, as well. Also, they were previously doing a thing with upgradeable ships- only saw it with the old designs, though, so this might just be all we get now, but I doubt it.
So, on dedicated servers- I wouldn't mind pitching in for some hosting. I know there's no solid info yet on what it'll require, but it sounds pretty light.

I'll have a dedicated one, and it should standup to the onslaught. 2tb bandwidth a month at rediculous speeds, 4 core something and 2 gigs of ram and this will be the only thing running on it. I dont need anything as it only cost 40$ per year and its for me to screw around with and do stuff like this. I can't wait to stress test it, because I haven't had more than 10 people doing something on a game server before.

I payed for this game a long time ago, and I've been ignoring it ever since. Excited to hear about the beta news though!
Are they going to close off the preorders at some point, or will you be able to buy into the beta whenever? Because I'd rather not be tempted by the phase one beta, but access to phase two would probably be nice.
What's been said is that you'll be able to purchase at any time, but once it's available from beta forward the price will be higher. No word on by how much, though.

So characters and worlds are likely to be lost many times during beta. For those who would rather restart on their own terms, turn off auto updating on the game in steam, then open steam console (either automatically by adding -console after the shortcut, or Run the command steam://open/console) and enter @AllowSkipGameUpdate 1. This might have to be done every time you launch steam, it isn't clear whether the setting saves, but if it does, just change it to 0 to allow updates again.
I realize this kind of defeats the purpose of early beta testing, but this should* allow some people to play who would otherwise be unwilling to.
*haven't tested it, but it has reportedly worked for others.
