After Windows XP crapped out on my main machine (taking a large amount of data with it) and since I don't plan on drinking the Vista kool-aid any time soon, I've been considering running Gentoo as my OS.
Does anyone have any recent experience running Wine? I'd mostly be worried about older games (Fallout, Baldur's Gate, etc), and WoW.
Edit: I have moderate Linux experience, so that's not my problem. It's Wine-specific.

You need cedega (which was one known as wineX) to get the most out of Windows games on Linux.
Most old games will run ok without it, just using wine, but chances are you'll have a few glaring graphical glitches. Cedega improves on this.
I'm not sure what the compatibility list is like at the moment, especially in regards to WoW, but hands down cedega will be superior to wine when it comes to that. Wine will limp along, cedega will give you a chance of playing WoW like a human.
Unfortunately, cedega is not free. check out www.transgaming.com for more information.
I've got both Cedega and Wine. I use them for World of Warcraft. Cedega is great, makes everything real simple, but wine has its uses. Performance wise, WoW runs the same in Cedega and Wine. Cedega seemed to take a bit more in the configuration side to get it working correctly on my system (OpenGL and Cedega = Hate Dell, had to use DirectX), but in WINE, I'm using OpenGL like a charm. I prefer wine because with wine you can set it to ALSA and use aoss so other prograns can use sound.
Cedega will snatch it up as OSS and won't let anything else use your sound mixer. I've had zero luck with the ALSA option in Cedega. You also can't do aoss cedega WoW.exe, because you won't then be able to alt-tab.
I helped my brother set up Wine to play WoW. It runs a bit faster than in Windows, although it was a bit of a pain to install. As far as I know, he's not run into any problems with it. If you need help, feel free to PM me and I'll try however much I can. No experience with Cedega, but I imagine it works at least as well.
However, I would advise using Ubuntu rather than Gentoo. The Portage tree has been giving me many problems for the past few months, things like dependent packages that do not exist or year-old versions not yet available. Combined with all the developer drama, Gentoo seems like a poor long-term choice.

I'll have to double up and agree with Ubuntu. It seems to be the friendliest distro, and quite honestly the nicest. Fiesty Fawn just went beta, so download the live for that and give it a shot. Keep in mind thats still beta and has a lot of kinks to work out, but it should be released in a month or so. The current release Edgy Eft is great, solid, and works very well
