It doesn't need to be photorealistic to be useful. This isn't just about the look. It's about capturing the entire thing at once, the actors movements, the body language that matches the voice expression, even interaction between multiple characters. The face is for the facial animation, which is different from photo realism.
I've acted in several plays in my life before and have actually had some dramatic training on top of that, I can see the advantage of having the same actor do everything. From my point of view the advantages are obvious and it's perfectly reasonable to wish to implement that.
MG has never had what you might call...well acted cutscenes. Voice acting, yes, but the voices don't match the japanese mannerisms in mgs1, or the actors they are using in the later games. They've always felt a bit off, like the animations aren't quite matching up to how the body would be moving to match what the voice actor is speaking.
If they actually take the time and effort to motion capture appropriate mannerisms for each region, english body language for english, japanese for japanese, there will be an immediate and noticeable improvement in the overall quality of the presentation. There wont be the disconnect anymore.
Of course you could argue that the odd disconnect is part of the series charm, but I'm willing to give it a chance.
I don't think I have a preference between the two. Giving an actor the ability to emphasize parts of their delivery with both their body and voice simultaneously is a big deal. There's an exponential leap in what a character can emote. On the other hand, Metal Gear has always had top notch motion acting (especially with soldier movements) because they largely used dedicated stunt actors, and that could get lost. Also, the language thing. If they don't re-act and re-cut all those scenes in other languages, it sort of defeats the purpose in every version of the game except the Japanese release, but it would be an enormous amount of work to do so.
So yeah. If the viral is correct then Hayter isn't "voice acting". He's full-acting or whatever the want to call it - voice, mo-cap, facial expressions, etc.
Ugh. See? This is the equivalent of a nut shot. The lazy man's troll. Funny after the fact, but fucking hurts like hell when it happens and lasts for a short while.
Well, if true, that's pretty awesome. Hope he's actually up for it. I was going to mention that I don't know about him doing actual facial mapping, even though he does look pretty close to Snake, but then I realized he wouldn't be doing classic Snake, but older'ish Big Boss. And that could actually work.

in fact i'd wager its the sole reason he keeps making metal gear games, just to fuck with people.

So there I was, going through the prologue and first level on normal idly farming a bit of BP for all these weapons that need all these expensive upgrades, getting S ranks on all the fights. I got hit a few times in the mistral fight, but in general it was mostly S. I was initially annoyed at messing up the rank on mistral so badly on normal, but then I remembered when I saw the end stage screen.
I was playing on hard.
I'd forgotten.
I love Platinum Games.

i had a really weird dream about metal gear last night. snake died during a fight with some guy in a battle suit of alien origin but some secret project that the government had going managed to regrow him inside a tank. the project was headed by some guy named los shady man. a technician accidentally let a bee inside the chamber during snake's biological reconstruction so it created a creature named bee snake who had weird wings on his arms and back and a deformed head and bee eyes. los shady man fed the technician to bee snake and sent him to kill the guy with the alien suit. bee snake clogged the suit's air vents with pollen and impaled the guy with his stinger during a fight in the cave where that boss fight with the pain took place. then i woke up.

I really like that you aren't penalised for item use. Fighting dudes on the ground with a couple of those flying thingies? Chuck a smoke bomb at the guy on the ground and go to town. The flyers wont be able to see you and thus can't shoot at you until it clears.
Also love the multiple zandatsu grabs. If I haven't crushed the balls of at least 90% of my opponents I'm pretty unhappy with a fight.

The Metal Gear Solid "Legacy Collection" found on a Korean rating has now been officially announced by Konami. The PS3 collection brings together Metal Gear Solid, the HD Collection versions of Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, and Peace Walker, and the "Trophy Edition" of Metal Gear Solid 4, along with the relatively hard-to-find Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions and two digital graphic novels by Ashley Wood, in a handsome package that might make some consider buying them again.
Metal Gear fans have an affinity for fancy cardboard boxes. The collection will be released in North and South America in June. Konami has yet to specify a price.

The tutorial missions are, but not the Integral ones.
And even physical copies don't work on the PS3 (nor did they on the PS2). This is the first time since the PS1 that they've actually been playable, which is awesome and I'll definitely find a way to get them (through a separate PSN release, if they do it, or buying the collection itself).
Honestly this whole, "one actor for one character" explanation doesn't really fly. There are exceptional voice actors out there and games are not films. There will likely never be a 100% photorealistic game produced in our lifetimes. So why pretend that getting it "all at once" is going to lead to better game characters?
It sounds like an excuse to cut a few jobs is what I'm saying. Same excuse was given for dropping Michael Ironside for the new Splinter Cell.
Uncharted. VO and motion capture was done at the same time and the result is amazing.
Sure, and Commander Shepard is also one of the best characters this generation, and didn't use VO/Motion capture from the same person.
You get results both ways. I'm saying it's not good if the ONLY way to make memorable characters from here on out is to use that method. I don't believe that's true.

Even the female shepard is stilted. Not as much but it is there. You can't claim it could not have been better, because it could have been.
The "best character this generation" as you claim, could have been better. And you say it's a silly thing to want to make better characters.
Really you are making a mountain out of a molehill. It's not the only way. It is an easier way.

Awkward animations are a large part of what makes Shepard endearing.
So if Hayter is actually voicing Snake again, I may just be the happiest man who ever lived.

A huge part of what make Shepard so memorable is that you are her. And she's not nearly so memorable as her supporting cast is. But I digress.
My initial point was that the method they used to capture the performances in the Uncharted series (actor in mo-cap suits with mics) paid off unbelievably well. Uncharted 2 may well stand as one of the most memorable games I've ever played ever (and my shit goes back to the Atari 2600) and it is due in large part to how real the characters felt.
If this is the avenue that Kojima and co. are going for MGSV I will await the results and make my judgement then. Unless we find out that it is in fact David Hayter doing performance capture. Then I will froth until release.

We would never have gotten the glory of the Shepard dance had it been "correctly" mo-capped.
And no, it's not a big deal. But it's a moot point since Hayter is back anyway.

If Hayter actually is voice acting, this could turn out to be pretty brilliant PR.
In fact, the build up for this reveal is so great, that I don't see how it couldn't be David Hayter in that video.

Is it becuase Zero respected her too much to start tampering with her DNA? I know him and Naked Snake were kind of obsessed with and idolized her.
Or maybe they just didn't want another soldier walking around with a "traitor's" face.
Or maybe... they did...
