Renzo, I get that you don't agree with me. That is perfectly fine. I am happy with this. Like I said, I don't want to go any further and try to argue over people who have made their decision firmly. If you look at what I said and immediately think "To hell with that", then as far as I am concerned, this entire argument was not addressed at you. It isn't worth trying to convince everyone after all.

But come on. Surely you can see it's worth it to at least try? Sure my joke went a bit far, sorry about that. My bad.

Which are you arguing? That $30 is too much for the content, or that this sets a precedent that other publishers might follow?

I'm sympathetic to the latter, but the former is not something I'm interested in talking about since I already made my decision by buying the game.

You can bet some companies will look at this. I really want to play this game. So much! But I can't buy it. I just can't. I would be shooting myself in the foot in a few years time.

Also a large part of my initial jest was because, well, https://ebgames.com.au/ps3-159509-Metal-Gear-Solid-V-Ground-Zeroes-PlayStation-3 That's pretty nuts.

Ground Zeroes looks great and all but I'm waiting until Phantom Pain to play it, since it'll probably come bundled with it for free or at a massively discounted price. I also haven't even bought a PS4 yet.

Downloading it on the 360 was a great deal (especially since I had $3 in xbox funbux leftover in my account apparently?) - $18 after tax is a pricetag I am completely fine with paying for the content I'm getting.

I beat it in a little over an hour with an A rank and no retries (but that was after a few false starts and totally starting over.) At first, when I hit the ranking screen, I told my brother not to buy it, but then I saw that beating it with an A only gets you 11% completion. Since then I've replayed the main mission twice (once getting another A, and then finally S ranking it). I'm still finding cool tricks that could definitely open up new paths for beating the main mission and keeping it fun, and I still want to go through and do an total stealth run (no reflex, no caution, etc).

The side ops are also really neat, and I still haven't even beat them despite starting and trying a few. They require different tactics and thinking then the main story, and time of day really does affect how it plays out, and that's pretty cool.

I see where a lot of people are coming from regarding the paying for a demo issue. I'm definitely getting my $20 worth. For a MGS fan, I don't think it's an unreasonable pricetag, but I SUPER glad I came into this thread earlier and talked myself into getting this version and not buying a PS4 just to grab this on next gen.

I knew this would be short, but man - it is *ridiculously* short. I figured it would be a few missions, or a somewhat lengthy mission. Nope, one really, really, really short mission. There are the side-ops that I haven't played yet, that look to be on the same map, I'll check em out later.
Honestly, I can see this pissing off a *lot* of people who are not aware how short this is. They buy it on the PS4/X1 store because there aren't many things to play, and bam done in <2hrs.

They should have called it "Metal Gear V: Prologue" or something.

I'm banking on that actually. Gonna pick it up preowned Monday. I assume a lotta uninformed folks will be returning it. :p

The price point softens the blow imo. Not sure about the US, but here in the UK it's £20, less than half a normal RRP. If people buy it assuming it's anything but a special case, that's on them.

    Oh brilliant

Yeah, people not knowing what they are getting in on could easily feel burned. I think saying the length of the game being just the main mission is a little disingenuous though. Not expecting everyone to 100% the game but I feel like beating the main mission plus all the side ops once would be a more realistic figure.

Anyway, I picked up a PS4 when I did for Ground Zeroes and do not regret it. I was going to get a PS4 sooner or later, GZ was my reason to pull the trigger. Unfortunately stuck at work right now or I'd be playing it more.

  • JebralJebral The guy nobody pays attention to Down South in the land of free thinkingRegistered User regular
Yup, just beat the main mission... All my goofing around and being rusty and unknowingly running past the final objective like 10 times and murdering 30+ guards netted me 2 hours. Wasn't a straight murder-thon, as I let the alerts die every few guys, haha.

This is such a super solid base for a game, but I completely understand the complaints. I myself couldn't say no, as MGS is among my very favorite franchises. I just hate like herpes that we get such a small taste and have to wait so freaking long for The Phantom Pain. Ugh!

If this had cost $15-$20 (I know, but I went physical) and come out 3 months before TPP I would call this a cool idea. As it is, its Metal Gear looking an playing better than ever, but also a super frustrating tease.

It is short. The price was initially 40 dollars. They dropped it to 30. I completed the main mission in around two hours with mess ups and having fun. Now there are side ops, collectibles, challenges, all the achievements and what not to get. So I can honestly see it taking a while longer. You'll be paying around 20-30 dollars depending on your system for ten or so hours of gameplay. That isn't bad by any means.

The only not good thing is that all of this gameplay takes place in this one area, and that won't change. So I guess it just depends on the person. If you want to look at it as screwing the consumer then ok. I just don't see it as that when it also comes with dlc for The Phantom Pain when that releases (although I fully expect it to be nothing that great, but a cool little thing), offers around ten hours of gameplay or so I would say to do everything, possibly more, even if it's in the same area, and is a nice tiding over until the full game releases. After completing the Main Mission you unlock side ops that can be completed that add more length as well.

I just don't see how people are saying this is hurting them in any way at all. How often is this even a thing that happens? If it weren't released as a game like this it would have come packaged in with a 60 dollar game that no one gave a shit about specifically to play the demo and be traded back in. To think this is something that would catch on and become considered ok is insane. It won't. This is something of it's own. If it were going to become a thing, it would have back when ZOE released, or Crackdown, or any of the other very few times it's happened over the years. This time they've just made a more in depth version of those demos and gave us something to tide us over.

Also, Ground Zeroes was in some ways an answer to a specific situation: That being a lack of Japanese games for the Playstation 4 even with its delayed launch in Japan, or more specifically a lack of AAA Japanese titles. I think the only game is the Yakuza one, and that is basically a Playstation 3 game that got a PS4 version near the tail end of its development, I believe.

Ground Zeroes is unlikely to set any trends.

    It isn't that I disagree.
    I do think it's unlikely.
I just don't rule anything out.
I cannot support anything that might increase the chance of a copy cat.
I hate the idea so much that even with a series I really love (my first ps1 game was mgs!) I will not take that chance.
I would like it if more people agreed with me regarding not buying it, but I know I can't really expect any of you to do so.
So there's nothing to argue about here.

Played it last night. Took just under 2 hours of playtime, not counting the opening and ending cutscenes. There's very little cutscenery during the mission, and no stopping for codec calls. They stopped doing that in Peace Walker, and it seems that's carried over to MGSV. You still get minor codec calls, but they just talk to you for a few seconds at a time as you play.

Looks great, even on PS3. No complaints about graphics or framerate. Mostly I found myself thinking "My PS3 is doing this? Holy shit." But I'm not a big stickler about performance. I'm more about art style, and the style here is great.

    Gameplay:
I got a C rank, so I'll probably go back to see if I can improve that. But man, if you ask me, this is the hardest Metal Gear yet. No radar of any kind. Guards can see you from pretty dang far away, or at least have a "What was that?" reaction from far away that causes them to come and investigate.

I found myself using the binocs a lot, both to just look around and to 'mark'. You can 'mark' enemies so they show up in your view even through walls, but you need to manually spot them first. In the dark. While they have unpredictable, or at least, more varied patrols.

At least twice, I tranqed a guard and put them in what I thought was an out-of-the-way spot, only for them to be seen 5, 10, 15 minutes later. And tranqing is still different than a CQC knockout. Dudes will wake up pretty fast from a knockout, but I don't think tranqed guards will ever wake up unless jostled.

The 'reflex' feature is nice, and it can save your ass. You can just turn it off if you don't want it. I think the same goes for 'marking' enemies.

The sprint and dive functions are nice. Makes avoiding searchlights more fun.

The tranq darts you start with are the only ones I saw for the whole mission. If you want to go non-lethal, don't waste them.

    Story:
Holy shit is the story dark. If you've watched the trailers so far, you've seen ALMOST all of the opening and ending cutscenes. There are some bits here and there that you haven't seen or heard that either add some context or just tell a little more of the story.

What you definitely haven't seen or heard is the tapes. There is a series of tapes that you can find that reveal more of what was going on in the mission area before you got there, and the content of those is in line with what you've see in the trailers. Horrible, horrible things are happening to everyone in this game.

I'm pretty happy with what I THINK I'm going to get from this game. I intend to play all the Extra Ops and get all the collectibles. I probably won't S rank anything, though. That sort of thing tends to be more frustrating for me than rewarding.

But I am a little disappointed that it reveals very little that I didn't already know. Maybe 5% of the cutscenes in Ground Zeroes haven't already been shown in one of the trailers. We're talking maybe 30 seconds to a minute of cutscenes I hadn't already seen. So if you're looking for something from the story in Ground Zeroes, and you've already watched the trailers, you'll likely be disappointed.

Oh, and everyone's voice has been serious'd-up. The big personalities and silly asides seem to have been scrubbed out in favor of dark drama. But again, that's just from the small story sampling we get here. There's more room in a full game to explore more, tonally.

    Two things:

    1) I like the side ops better than the main mission.

    2) If anyone even has the SLIGHTEST suggestion about how to get this game to connect to the network, please help. I have no idea and I really want to use the iDroid app.

I've tried updating the PS4 firmware, uninstalling and reinstalling Ground Zeroes, rebooting my router and tested out other online stuff. I can broadcast gameplay of GZ, I can play Injustice online, I can watch Netflix and Hulu. I ran the PS4 network test and everything came back fine. I've seen one thread on gamefaqs that's 2 pages with people with the same issue, and a couple posts on Konami's facebook page - so it's not really WIDE spread, but it's not just me. Any thoughts?

I played Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and FFX HD pretty much all day yesterday. I finished the main mission in Ground Zeroes in just about 3 1/2 hours, but that was playing very stealthily and kinda sorta searching for XOF patches and just playing around with the game mechanics in general. But I went right back to it after putting a few hours into FFX. Overall I'm happy with my GZ purchases (I got it for both PS4 and Xbone) and I think it'll keep me entertained for a quite a while since I usually try to do everything in Metal Gear games, being that it's my favorite videogame franchise.

SAY WHAT!? This March was NOT the month to release a demo-length game for $30. That's not to say it won't sell fine, but not much going on in the gaming horizon? This month is like THE month of video games until the fall.

    South Park: Stick of Truth
    Dark Souls 2
    Titanfall
    Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD
    Infamous: Second Son
    Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls
Elder Scrolls Online(early access starts in March)

I have no problem with them releasing this at this price point, because informed buyers know what they're getting in to, and it's up to the market and individual consumers to determine if ground zeroes is worth their dollars at the list price, but the suggestion that there's not much going on in gaming right now is crazy town.

Even if we're just talking about the console games and remove the D3 expansion and ESO, then you're talking about a month with 5 AAA console games besides MGS:GZ, 4 if you don't count FFX/X-2, but you'd be silly not to. It's 100+ hours minimum worth of quality JRPG goodness.

I just finished my first playthrough. Great gameplay and presentation. I enjoyed the storytelling, voice acting, direction, etc, but it was too short to really explore any of the characters or the setting with any depth. Since I only played Metal Gear for the NES, the first Solid, and then 4, I don't have a firm grasp on the world of Big Boss.

I am looking forward to the side missions and getting better at stealth. I didn't get the chance to do any of those slow motion CQC, mutli-target attacks. The one time I did initiate such a confrontation Snake just whipped out a pistol and cold capped the fool.

Going to have to do them all again as I am not satisfied with my performance with them and I missed side objectives in all of them. And then I will have to try them on hard mode.

It takes some getting used to, to be sure. I have unlocked some fancy guns, so I can't wait to replay with a slightly more hilariously violent intent! This is a super tense bitch if you turn off reflex mode and marking and such. I really like reflex mode, actually. It's not a free ticket, often I simply don't have a shot or I'm caught with an empty gun or I try to CQC someone who is just too far away.

But then there are also times where I get completely surprised by a search team and instinctively shoot all 4 of them in the face. Then die of laughter.
