To me those shields look too much like a police badge, but once I get some free time I will come up with a mock up of how it might look in the shield, as well as just having a general outline.
Probably won't be until the end of the weekend though.
Here is a mock up I did with a general border and simplified colors.
Totally awesome, although I am still uncertain that adding the year gives any real benefit, especially if the only thing that is going to change from year to year is the number at the top. I think a pin like this should be a unifier for our community. Everyone who gets one should get the same one, regardless of when you get it. I know that I will not likely be interested in having a dozen of these things five years from now. But I do know that right now and into the future, I will be happy and proud of the one I get this time. I know we all love our cheevos and we all gotta catch em all, but I think that we get enough of that outside of our little corner of the internet here, and even in here with the forum badge, challenge coin, pinny arcade, et al. I would like more things to share with the community, not more things to collect every year. This post kinda went off the rails a bit, but I started it cause I think that what @skelevader does is awesome, and I still do. Even if I disagree a bit.
tldr;
+10 for an awesome new thing.
-1 for each new pin for a new pax.
I clicked agree, but I felt my 100% agreement with peet needed its own post.

I also agree that not including the year would be best (The response was overwhelming for it though at the beginning), but I do like the look of the ribbon on top. Maybe we can compromise and just have "PAX PRIME", or just "PRIME" in the ribbon? It would eliminate the need to create one each year, but would still satisfy those that like the cheevos.
Count me as another vote for dropping the year. We've got plenty of collector stuff to gather each year. It would be neat to have at least one thing be unified across years... and maybe even paxes?

To be clear, by year I meant the script denoting which pax it was 'for', not necessarily confined to the numerical year, but also to include prime/east/aus/moonbase. The same crest, for the same community.
Not that i disagree with peetsnack, but have a question. If we do drop the year (and even the event designation in general) does that mean we'll be doing a pin run only this year? Cause what happens when we do a community pin run this year, and then new people want one next year? Do we do a new run next year? Cause if we have to do a pin run every year anyway, it doesn't hurt to up the date on them. Doesn't mean everyone has to collect them every year, it can just be a "Member Since 20XX" type thing.
I personally like dates on things. But peetsnack does make a really good point.
I like the idea of leaving the year off. I don't really collect things and while either way I would get it, I think it should just be something simple like "Pax Forumer". I think it should be made available every year though, because new people will want them and some people will lose them and need replacements.

I am indifferent to the year, I see the argument on both sides. I hope that we could do a new pin every year, with the actual pin changing and not just the year.
In addition, that mock up looks stellar. Great job!

Love the new pin and border.
It's probably just me being super tired, but it looks like the color for the wording is a little too light. Maybe use the darker of the greys? Again though it may just be me bring beyond exhausted but I thought I'd bring it up to see if it was just me.

Like I said previously, the "Grey" is the actual metal finish.
To change it we would either pick a different finish for the metal, or redesign those areal to use an enamel color.

The question I would have related to this is, year being absent from the pin, for things like this and the challenge coin etc, how many people are new each year vs people who bought in the previous year coming back? In short, if the pin is the same, would there be enough new demand after a year or two to make it economically feasible to do a new run?
It looks unbalanced without the banner at the top. Is there not some compromise/agreement we can come to? I like the year idea, but can see there valid points of the opposers.
What if we did the 'Welcome Home' across the top?
- Biting's excellent! It's like kissing. Only there's a winner.

@SkeleVader can correct me if I am wrong, but as I understand it, the majority of the cost of the challenge coin is the cost to make the die. Once the die is created, the items created from the die are actually fairly cheap to create in quantity. If we create a single pin to be used into the future, I think that Phoenix will keep the die, and then strike new pins from it if and when we make another order. It may even be cheap enough after this first run for some individuals to front the cost of the pins and make them available during PAX, which I think would be the best possible outcome.

Both versions look great, but I'll cast a vote to keep the banner. With the year or without, I like it.

Have to agree with Kelly.
It seems unbalanced without the top banner. Even if we don't do a year I think we need something up there like "PAX" or "Penny Arcade Expo".
And I also have to agree with Malgaras. When will it get to a point where we stop making them because only 10 people are new and we all still have ours?
Just being honest if we don't do a year or change the design pretty drastically every year this would be the only year I get one unless I lose mine before next PAX and want to replace it

Yeah, the more I think about it the more in favor I am of keeping it dated. Even the official Pinny Arcade pins are dated.
I really like this idea, seconded! This could be at least one thing that doesn't discriminate about when/where you went to PAX, and that appeals to me a lot.
Does the vote for banner w/words vs no banner mean the year idea has been fully shot down?
Not completely, no. If the "No Banner" wins then it wold be gone, but if the "Banner" choice wins then we can still debate on what it would actually say.
Hey guys, just about to vote just wondering what the approx cost of these are? If I am able to land tickets I'll be throwing down for this
This is the first year of doing the pins so it is unknown. Expect them to be under $5, but really I do not know yet.

I think the top is a little too plain without the banner, but I'd be happy with either one.
If the votes end up leaning to pro-banner, then I think you should put up another poll like that one asking if people want the year and/or prime/east/aus on there or not. Personally, I agree entirely with peetsnack. The way I see it, unlike the challenge coins or forum badges, the title along the top banner would be the only thing that would change for newer pins, and that just seems kinda pointless.
I think I prefer the "no-banner" look. I understand that people like dates on things for collectible purposes but unless the pin has a major change, (general shape of pin, icon placement, etc.) I don't see a reason to have the same pin annually with just a year change.
peetsnack brought up a good point in that the die would only have to be created once and that would keep the cost down for recurring years.

The "Welcome Home" phrase does not have to be final, it is just showing the general look with a banner.
