So apparently New Jersey law contains two conflicting statements on when an election filling the vacancy would have to be held.

Basically the difference comes down to whether the seat would have to be re-elected in 2013 or 2014. Either way the Governor is allowed to call a special election, though.

I don't think Christie is dumb enough to risk his own reelection by trying to keep that seat in GOP hands for another year. NJ has a fair number of republicans but keep in mind it hasn't had a republican senator in like 25 years.

Well yeah, but it's just interesting to see that this stuff can still happen. You'd think they would proof-read these things.

Christie has announced a special election in October.

That seems like the smartest move, especially if he appoints a non-loon Pub in the interim. He can tell the Pubs in 2016 that he elected one of their own, and he can tell the general public that he pushed to get a democratically-elected Senator in there as quickly as he could. And if the Pubs cry for not getting a teaper in there, he can just point out that it didn't much matter for the sake of a guy who was going to be in there only a few months, anyway.

It'll appear reasonable to the general, and reasonable to anyone who doesn't already hate him for working with Obama, and the few that already do hate him aren't going to be won over anyway.

The teapers already hate Christie because he didn't scream at Obama during Sandy.

You have to remember most of the primary audience isn't reasonable at all. The hardcore partisans are roasting him over this, unsurprisingly.

Still probably his best option for remaining Governor of New Jersey though.

Isn't this a gigantic waste of money to have a special election a month before a real election?

  • enlightenedbumenlightenedbum Registered User regular
Special election would be this year, Lautenberg's seat was up next year.

I mean that NJ has their Governor and state legislative elections in November this year, so why not lump the Senate seat in with that? They're having to put on two elections in a months span.

  • Captain CarrotCaptain Carrot Alexandria, VARegistered User regular
Yeah, but Christie is up two weeks after the special election, so it does cost a lot more money.

Because a Senate special election would increase turnout, and make his reelection a little less sure. Also, it technically has to be within... I think 76 days, so he is following a letter of the law (which there are apparently two, and they give leeway, or something)

  • OptimusZedOptimusZed Registered User regular
Yeah, Christie is worried that Booker is running for the Senate seat and that would drive up Democratic turnout, lowering his margins of victory in the gubernatorial election and hurting his Presidential chances. So he put the special election up front instead of running that risk, or risking a 1.5 year appointment pissing off a bunch of Dems instead.

On a completely unrelated note, I found out one of the parents of a student of mine has worked for Strom Thurmond.

So did y'all hear about this year's farm bill?
During the House Agriculture Committee’s debate over a new farm bill, Tennessee Republican Stephen Fincher... in defending relatively small cuts in food stamps... cited 2 Thessalonians 3:10... “For also, when we were with you, this we declared to you: that, if any man will not work, neither let him eat.”

Using Agriculture Department data, researchers at the Environmental Working Group found that Representative Stephen Fincher, a Republican and a farmer from Frog Jump, Tenn., collected nearly $3.5 million in subsidies from 1999 to 2012. The data is part of the research group’s online farm subsidy database, from which the group issues a report each year.

In 2012 alone, the data shows, Mr. Fincher received about $70,000 in direct payments, money that is given to farmers and farmland owners, even if they do not grow crops. It is unclear how much Mr. Fincher received in crop insurance subsidies because the names of people receiving the subsidies are not public. The group said most of the agriculture subsidies go to the largest, most profitable farm operations in the country. These farmers have received $265 billion in direct payments and farm insurance subsidies since 1995, federal records show.

This man should starve. His whole family should be made to starve. Let's not forget that many food stamp recipients are children who can't be expected to work anyway.

I know what you're trying to do here, but...

I guess that depends on how "white" you consider Greeks to be. Also, the people he was writing to probably weren't wealthy.

Boehner tried to pass the farm bill and failed. Dems bailed because it heavily cut SNAP, GOP bailed because it didn't cut SNAP enough. I suspect Pelosi probably wins here.

Some new, completely unsurprising Ron Paul revelations:
The hacktivist collective Anonymous set out to take down the white supremacist American Third Party (A3P) in what they called “Operation Blitzkrieg” but they may have done much more.

In a document dump that includes private forum messages, emails, organization notes another other information the group found numerous connections between Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul and A3P. According to the documents, all hosted here, Paul himself regularly met with many A3P members, engaged in conference calls with their board of directors and engaged in a “bridging tactic” between A3P and the Ron Paul Revolution.

Other excerpts show A3P webmaster Jamie Kelso (whose email account was one hacked by the collective) coordinating meeting between Paul and other members of A3P such as corporate lawyer and chairman of the neo-Nazi group Paul. “I’m going to go to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) with Bill Johnson,” reads an email to an A3P member dated January 2011. “Bill and I will be meeting with Ron and Ran Paul. I have a teleconference call with Bill (and Ron Paul) tonight. Much more later. Things are starting to happen (thanks to folks like you).”

So today I engaged in the democratic process and cast a vote on the New Jersey democratic primary for US Senate.

Voted for Rush Holt since he was the most liberal of the four candidates and because Cory Booker is a craven coward and he can wait till he wins the primary for my vote in the general. Anyone else go vote today?

If Booker actually does accomplish nothing and alienates nearly everyone in the Democratic party I will be a relatively happy camper. I mean, I'd be a happier camper if he just decided to fuck off and go make collecting money from vain rich assholes his full time job, but I'll take what I can get.

And then you have Pallone and only there to split the black vote in favor of Pallone candidate Sheila Oliver.

Not that I'm not cynical enough to figure that Holt, who I voted for, wasn't on the ballot to split liberals off from Bookers voter base, but what can you do.

Pallone is definitely the inside guy and New Jerseys democratic party is the worst.
