because you're stuck ten years in the past when there was such thing as 3d for the sake of 3d?
Well, technically, unless you have actual 3D movement, 3D is pretty superfluous. WC3 would've worked just as well in 2D, because verticality doesn't affect the gameplay in any way.
Well, it allows for multiple angles of view and projectiles that visibly traverse the Z-plane. Although, that doesn't account for much.

3D in warcraft 3 was used primarily as an aid during story scenes, yes (something which it worked very well for), but warcraft 3 is a five year old game; releases like dawn of war and the subsequent company of heroes have shown that 2d for a RTS game just isn't going to cut it nowadays
making starcraft 2 in 2D wouldn't avoid "3D for the sake of 3D", it would be "2D for the sake of 2D"
I loathe 3D for the sake of 3D, so I have to ask: why?
Why? Because I really can't think of anything approaching a non-stupid faux elitist response.
It really depends on what they do with it. If it's like Warcraft III where the game is effectively 2D, but everything is skewed at an awkward angle, projectiles can arc properly, and in-game cutscenes have a few neat camera tricks, then I'd rather it not. If they want to do something truly unique to the medium then by all means they should -- especially now that they have more breathing room than they did five years ago.
What I love so much about this mod, is that when I looked at that first screen shot I thought "Oh some jack ass is making a StarCraft Game on, and thought it would be funny to call it "STARCRAFT 3D!"
When really... that screen shot was 3D!
edit: Also, yes this is basically "StarCraft: Forever" I never expect it to come out at all.

It also allows for the game to be run at higher resolutions without having to worry about the sprites shrinking into oblivion or players with higher resolutions getting an unfair advantage by being able to see more terrain.
Anywho, I've been waiting for this mod for like over two years now.. It's been in development longer than the Black Mesa mod. If it comes out, I'll be thrilled and definantly play it, but until then I'm not going to worry about it.
As for a StarCraft MMO. So long as they don't make it like WoW (I.E. Killings mobs for phat lewt and XP) I'll keep an open mind. I'd vastly perfer Starcraft II though.
If you want to actually play the game in question, we game on every night.
I'm debating if taking the time to find my old CDs is worth the few bucks it'll cost me to just buy a Battle Chest.

Well Blizzard did say their next MMO wasn't going to be like WoW. That it would be something innovative and new. Heh, wonder how long they will stick to that game plan.

I think this is the general consensus.
And wow, the Mod has been in development for over 2 years? That makes me really skeptical on if it will ever be released =(

This mod has been in development forever. At this point, you're better off playing Dawn of War or Brood War.
I couldn't agree me. I used to love playing Starcraft but since I was sent a free copy of Dawn of War: GOTY by THQ back in October and I haven't played another RTS since. I picked up both expansion packs, which are superbly crafted. Dark Crusade is my favourite RTS at the moment.
I bought Warcraft III a month or two ago, and I haven't touched it yet.

Longer, IIRC.
Warcraft III was released in the summer of 2002.
It's expansion, Frozen Throne, was released the summer of 2003.
I believe the mod was announced before Frozen Throne came out.

Because that game brings the boom in a way you can't do in 2d.
