Today SEGA announced it has three more classic games from the Genesis library on the way to the Wii's Virtual Console. Longtime SEGA fans can look forward to Virtua Fighter 2, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, and Wonder Boy in Monster World.
Oh fuck yes, it is BACK baby! My ALL-TIME favorite game is coming to the Wii. I'm talking my absolute favorite game. I love Wonderboy in Monsterworld way more than Sonic. Before I was known as "the Sonic guy" on this board, I was known as "The Wonderboy guy."
everyone who has a wii must own this gam. No questions asked. This is the best game ever made. Wonderboy in Monsterworld is actually the 4th (or 5th if you want to be technical) game in the wonderboy series, and the 3rd game in the Monsterworld series. And holy shit, is it ever great. It plays like a cross between Super Metroid and LTTP. It's a fucking dream.
This game screams "Play me." I don't want to get into a 50 page discussion on why it's so awesome... just spend the $5 a trust me.
Awesome. I was afraid Sega had totally forgotten this franchise even existed. Anyone who's into Metroid / Zelda / Metroidvanias should get this, it's really great.
Man, it's late. I really need to start paying attention. Haha. Wow, my excitement meter just went through the damn roof. I can't wait to have a copy of this that actually looks good on my TV.
So far that's been a huge selling point of the VC games for me so far. Nice looking old school graphics over component. Score.
I have never played this series before. However, my interest is piqued. And that link to HG101 shows that it has had a Sega Ages release in Japan that includes 6 games. I can play imports on my PS2. I think you know what my question will be.

Should I order it?
YES. They aren't Text Heavy (except for Wonderboy 4... which is being released on the Wii).
GREAT games. I promise, anyone who picks these games up will be thanking me when they're done.

Well if TSR endorses the collection, I don't think I have much of a choice. I'll try to get around to ordering it tomorrow. It's only 30 bucks after all. I've also wanted another import to play on my PS2.
I never owned a Sega console. Seems like I missed out on something
If anything can get me interested it's describing something as a cross between Zelda and Super Metroid
Believe me, the game is so unbelievably awesome. It plays a lot like Zelda II if Zelda II was done to perfection. I say it plays like metroid because it has one giant world - you could technically go straight to the end boss at the begining of the game if you had every item. Instead, you have to search out the entire world to find items, which change the way you move and stuff just like in metroid.
for example, at one point, you need to get the oasis boots in order to cross the moaii desert which is so hot that it'll burn you alive. Unfortunately, the boots are under poseidon's ocean, and you need to find his trident in order to breath underwater. And the monsters which have invaded Wonderworld have taken the trident into their lair. And the only person who can enter their layer is a child which has been kidnapped across the jungle. Etc.
Seriously, I can't express how excited I am about this game. I own it 3 times, and I am 100% gonna buy it when it comes out on the Wii. I want everyone to play this, because it's such an underrated gem. If it had been released on the NES, it would have been remembered along side Zelda and metroid as one of the greatest games in history.

I'll give you a quick description:
- Sidescrolling platformer. You jump, you slash, climb ladders.
- You can find / buy new weapons (attack power, range, special attacks), armors (defense power), shields (defense power? I forget) and boots (walking speed - don't get to frustrated with how slow you walk at the start of the game, it'll get better soon and you'll be Speedy Gonzales towards the end). Some items give you new abilities when equipped.
- You can earn more hearts for life, just as in Zelda.
- There are spells.
- You'll travel through a variety of settings, both outside and dungeons. There are multiple towns with absent-minded NPCs.
- A trademark of the series is hidden doors - press UP at certain locations to enter. Often these are placed at deadends etc, but you'll probably find yourself running about pressing "UP" everywhere in the vicinity of visible but unreachable treasure.
- There's backtracking involved, but doors (I love doors. I love lamp?) connect the world to give you shortcuts.
I'll echo that spoiler warning, the footage is taken from near the end of the game.
Damn, it does make want to replay the game, been several years. I've got it on MegaDrive cartridge but I can't stomach RF on a weird-geometry CRT. :P I should craft myself a RGB cable for it, or better yet - get a Wii.
The Genesis port is so horrible. You get to play a 3d game in 2d. So it's incredibly slow-feeling and jerky. It's fun to play and laugh at, though. It's on the Genesis collection, but I definately wouldn't play money for it alone.

It's not that bad. It plays like VF.
People who play it and think it sucks simply don't get VF.
I like VF. It plays like VF in 2d, is the problem. You can't move around in 3d, you play with ugly sprites, etc. 2d fighters shouldn't move that slow and feel so floaty.

But that's the way VF plays.
VF didn't get fast until Fighters Megamix.
EDIT: And it's worth noting that, until Fighters Megamix, you couldn't control yourself in 3D either. VF and VF2 were essentially fought on a 2D plane.

So, does this come to PAL VC? Color me interested.
Also, on the Virtua Fighter side topic: Yeah, it plays just like the 3D VF2, which is to say that it moves slowly and is floaty, but the same types of moves, combos, and juggles are the same as you would have in VF2, and the game moves in much the same way as the 3D one (as in, speed/floatiness). VF1 and VF2 were fought on 2D planes, anyway, so even that translates over. I'm not saying it's a good game, though. I don't like it. But then again, I don't much like VF4:Evo either.
So my import copy arrived and I tried out about 3 of the games. I suck total ass at Wonder Boy. It's hard for me to do the high jump because I forget which button I set to be jump and I end up throwing a hammer instead.
I think Monster Land was next right? The side-scrolling RPG game? I got up to the knight boss before dying. That game is fun as hell and I don't know why.
The last one I tried was the next one and it went back to side-scrolling and then you went all space shooter at the end. I got to the snake boss and I died. I could not dodge all the deadly beach balls it shot out.
I think I have 3 games left to try out and I shall do so later. Overall it looks to be pretty fun but not frustratingly difficult, which is good. Usually I'd get mad if I missed a simple jump but I didn't in Wonder Boy. Odd. Also, Wonder Boy became Adventure Island over here didn't it?
This is probably my all-time favorite Genesis game. I played it non-stop when I was little and had an absolute blast. I remembered how I loathed the final dungeon though. Damn death pits.
I saw the thread title and thought "This thread better have been done by TheSonicRetard." I was not disappointed. Though it does lack some of the charm your other threads have.
My only problem with Monster World:
HOW DO YOU GET PAST THAT FRIKKIN ICE DOOR!?!?!?
Other than that it's my most favorite RPG. If you can call it an RPG.
Is this on the Genesis Collection for PSP? I really need to pick that up regardless before it starts getting hard to find.
I'm pretty sure it's not.
I've always been curious about the Wonder Boy series; I remember seeing screens of Dragon's Curse in a gaming magazine when I was young and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I'll be holding off on picking it up (gonna work off my VC backlog for a while), but I can't wait to sink my teeth into this one.
Man I registered just so I could publicly dork out about Monster World. It's been maybe 5 years since I played this one last. Re-bought the cart but it doesn't load property, guess it or the genesis need a cleaning or something. Extremely hyped for the VC release, playing through Dragon's Curse on it right now even though I have the Hu-card.
Monster World IV is also sweet.
My secret VC fantasy is to see a localized IV and Dynastic Hero show up.. anyone got a US Dynastic Hero they want to sell me? Rarer than Dracula X, arg.

Thats what this thread is about. Wonderboy 4 is coming to the Wii. Hence the screenshots.

What category is this going under?
They also made a port to the Genesis.
What category? Wonderboy? Probably adventure.
Where ever Zelda and Metroid would go.

It's not a story heavy game, but it does show some spoilers. Such a great game, though.

It was a Sunday afternoon. I had the curtains drawn, and the sun was still streaming in, and my Dad was barbequeing outside.
It is one of the most vivid memories I have.
Sadly, I tried playing it again a year or so ago, and hated the damn thing. I don't feel like the gameplay has aged well

Which version is that?
I've been waiting for somebody to make that joke.
