I went with Blue Dragon based on the advice of the Massively guy. The best reason why to go for the old server is that there is less crazy drama going on and it's actually possible to chop down a tree without fearing for your life.
Yeah, I would stick with the original server. It's already established with a thriving population, and new servers are always risky in terms of long-term play due to player attrition and the like.
Interesting! It does sound like a very well done Sandbox MMO which is something I've certainly missed. How rampant is griefing and the like compared to say EVE then, how hard is it to get rolling as a newbie who doesn't know anybody ingame? Having only one character's fairly intimidating, but I'm guessing like EVE there's no way to screw up a character.
Griefing doesn't happen as often as you would think, given the open PVP nature of the game. I mean sure, you'll eventually get killed, but I haven't been spawn-camped or the like.
Consider this: farming is a main crafting activity that happens outside of town, which involved watching your crops for several minutes. I've never been killed doing this. I'm not saying that people don't get killed while performing this activity, but contrary to what you think, it's relatively safe.
This is mainly due to the crime system that The Spaniard mentioned. Killing other players earns you infamy, and when it's high enough players who are acting as constables can kill you (sometimes for a handy profit). If your killed, you get sent to in-game prison, where you have to sit around for a decent chuck of real-life time. If you infamy is really high, you spend time in prison (a day I think?) and then you get publicly executed. This doesn't mean that you suffer permadeath (that doesn't exist in this game), instead being executed gives you a crippling debuff for a sizeable amount of time.
Age of Wushu has an open-PVP system that is surprsingly competant. I really enjoy the mechanics of this system.
Yeah, IIRC it's Blue Dragon. I've played the game a decent amount, if I'm on hit me up and I can answer any questions about the things that I do know (a lot of the game is still a mystery to me, though I have the basics down pretty well). I'll be writing a research paper this weekend though, so I'm not sure how much I'll actually be on.
I don't understand the "Practice Martial Arts" form of skill progression. I think I popped two pills and wasted them, but I'm not sure.
My in-game on Blue Dragon is Umarth.
What is this I don't even.

I am DelunPhezhi in-game. Blue Dragon, like the rest.
Really enjoying this so far despite the Engrish. Feels like a keeper.

I shouldn't laugh at it, but the Engrish is often funny. In some ways I wish it wasn't localized.
There used to be a generic error message, basically the "your bags are full message," which read as "Please follow the lady to your guest room." I loved all the innueondo that that statement implied.
I only got an hour or so to play today before I had to go to work but I think I like the game. I was pestering people in the beginner area by begging and eventually someone got fed up with it and killed me so I decided to stop that for awhile and continue my intro quests. Now I'm in the beggar school and learning new skills and now I feel like I'm finally learning some martial arts! I stayed logged in for XP conversion purposes so y'all can go ahead and send invites my way and I'll respond to them when I get home.
Alright between this and the reletively low price, I gotta admit I'm pretty curious now. Also because I love martial arts settings to death, but do we have any sort of group or guild or whatever ingame? It does seem like the kind of game you really, really want to be some part of a group in.
Interesting! So before I get the game I'm eyeballing the Wiki and looking at the schools, which I gather are kinda like classes although you can get everything anyways? Either way, Wudong or whatever they're called seem to have a cool thing going on.
And blue outfits, I do love blue. But badass beggers are fun too...

Hmmm... The Open PvP idea always turned me off of EvE but I like the way this sounds (as I usually don't care for pvp and solo).
But leading or joining in a large group performing a kata is cool.
it sounds cool and it looks cool (at first) but its very hands off and you'll soon find yourself doing other things while you're waiting for your turn to input some basic DDR button moves.
you'll be doing it everyday though since its a very good way to boost spending your cultivation in your skills
Yeah, this game is quite a bit like EVE in the sense that there's lots of activities where you'll be barely touching the game for several minutes at a time as boring tasks complete.
What is this I don't even.

I originally chose the Black Turtle server... then saw that everyone was going for Blue Dragon instead. So I made a second account and started playing, but now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think I had the opportunity to choose a server for the second account.
How do I check which server I'm on? I'll have to do that when I get home so I can start again before making too much progress.

When you first start the game's launcher do not hit "Play". Look around at that screen and there should be something that says, "Server". Click and that and it will let you switch. No need for a new account.

Oh, that's rad. I guess I've got two characters, than. A shaolin, and a beggar. Probably delete one of them, actually... make room for an "evil" class.
Probably the Shaolin, seems that would probably be the most popular school of choice.

I only just started playing and things are, of course, a bit confusing. However the game does do a number of things that seem pretty cool/ingenious and some of the little story tutorial quests I've done have been surprising.

I generally consider the "confusing" a good thing when it comes to an initial reaction to an MMO. If I feel like I've pretty much discovered everything in the first ten minutes, then I know it's time to uninstall.
I'm finding that there's so many different directions for me to pick from at the moment, and I have no fucking clue how to do some of the most basic of things. Discovery is the best part to almost any game.

Hehehe.
Well I made it past the initial super-newbie stage and now I am working to join my school of choice.
edit- After that I think I'll look in to what kind of crafting I can get in to and work on that for awhile.

Crafting, or more specifically: gathering, is the way to go to make some cash. You'll be hurting for cash in the beginning, and there's no traditional quests to keep your wallet padded like in most MMOs.

Has anyone figured out how begging works? One of the abilities says that it's used on NPC's, but I've tried at least a couple different targets, and it always tells me they're not interested (or something like that).
Also, food. Yeah, apparently it's an important commodity in this game. I definitely plan to get into food preparation for that reason. Is there a limit on the professions you can have? I'm guessing that I probably won't be able to produce and prepare food on my own... and begging is already taking a slot.

I've never tried begging, but I have had more then one player prostrate themselves to me and ask like 10wen in exchange for a mystery pouch.
Which both times I received some decent items.
edit- Also, depending on PA interest, I might make a Guild. I think it costs 300 liang which shouldn't take me too terribly long to get.
If there is interest, then we'd need a name. Twelve characters max (including spaces). We could go with the old standard of WANG, but since the game takes place in China it might come off as strange. :P
edit 2- Inspired by a pair of pants I found and to pay tribute to our PA roots I suggest Silly Geese.

Anyone know how to get more bag space? Because damn.
I think craftsmen are the guys who make bags you can equip? I'm not too sure. Basically you're allowed to equip two bags for each tab backpack tab i.e the equipment tab, materials tab, other loot tab etc
I do know that if you follow the storyline quests you get (extremely easy but also very boring) you'll get your own bag slots you can equip for each tab and a lot of bound money you can use to buy things from NPCs.
What's bound money? Well there are two sets of currencies, bound and unbound (if you check how much money you have you may see two rows of numbers). Unbound is money you use to barter for things with players while bound is only for transactions with the game or npcs.

You can get all gathering professions (mining, fishing, hunting, farming and woodcutting), one crafting profession (cooking, tailoring, craftsmen, blacksmithing and there's one or two others) one cultural profession (weiqi, musician, painting, caligraphy) and one manufacturing (begging, divination).

Just start kidnapping folks.
kidnap everyone.
Once you've joined a school you should definitely give a spy mission a try. You can do five spy missions per day and if you complete each mission with full rewards you get 160xp and 50 liang (bound). If you want more information here's a good video that gives you an overall guide of how it goes
See one of the appeals so far to me is that it sounds like this is a pretty solid sandbox, which I love, but it's also the kind of game you don't need to sink an absurd amount of time into to get anywhere at all while still being surprisingly deep. A bit like EVE with less reliance on massive alliances and politics, which just aren't my cup of tea. Is that an accurate assessment?
Also kung fu. Are there any good unarmed specialists or is it all armed combat? I'm cool either way as long as the animation quality's decent, anyways.

I'd say that is a fair enough assessment. I mean the closest other MMO I can use to describe Wushu is EVE, but not EVE. Heh.
Yeah you can be a hand-to-hand fighter if you desire.
