You don't need to worry about oxygen as Cha-Cha or Kayamba shoul dhave the ancient mask. Just ping them when you want air and he'll motor on over to you and supply it. (Otherwise just grab the two mini-air in the supply chest for the rare occasion when he doesn't make it in time. I have yet to actually have to use one though.)
I had Kayamba wearing the ancient mask when I did it...guy totally ignored my summons through most of the fight after reaching the third chamber. There are places to get air in there, but yeah, guy completely ignored me, and it's not like he was dead or anything. Just doing whatever a Kayamba does.
I think if they're in rage mode they'll ignore you (and normal behavior) and only do their rage mode thing.

Yeah if you see that little red # on them they'll ignore your orders. I typically didn't try to summon them over until I was at about 1/4 just in case they were raging. It usually gave them plenty of time to mosey on over. If you want you can do it when you are at half Oxygen just to top off or wheneer you notice that they aren't raging.
You have an ample default oxygen bar so there is really no reason to wait until the last second to try and refill it. Just ping them periodically when you are lowish and do it again if they are raging (when they finish obviously) and you shouldn't ever need to use an air item. Worst case scenario there is also (I believe) and air bubble point right up near the dragonator.

New hunter here with more questions. I've seen high rank, G-rank, etc. thrown out. I assume these are versions of monsters, and pieces of high rank monsters can make high rank equipment? If I understand this part correctly, can someone explain how I come across high rank monsters? Keep in mind I've only gotten up to the 4star quests in the solo game.
Second somewhat related question. I've heard your online rank is different than your solo rank. I also heard the online quests are different than the solo quests. Is there a reason to progress through the solo game at all if my goal is to become super powerful? Like, are all the best weapons / armors only able to be made with pieces of online monsters? Lastly, I'm thinking of picking this up on the 3ds so my wife and I can hunt together. Can we get by as a duo online?
This is a ton of questions, but I haven't really seen great answers to my questions on gamefaqs. If there is a simple breakdown of all this stuff, I'll gladly take a link. Thanks!
Get to 6 star village or 3 star port to get to high rank. And g-rank is a step above that and is only in the port.
So yes, eventually you'll need to do port. However, doing village is nice because it's easier to solo, plus it's necessary to fully upgrade all your food ingredients and get all the masks and abilities for your shakalakas, which again makes things easier when soloing or duoing.
WiiU + 3DS together is local only. Only one of you can go online at once.

Thanks for the answers! So local multiplayer can only go up to high rank quests, or can we do G-rank?
...okay, yeah, so Brachydios is actually pretty dangerous, yes.
Also, man, my funds are getting dangerously low. It helps that nine trips to search for treasure and the only things the boats bring me is steel eggs, even giving them Treasure Trackers.

Anyone still playing Tri, the penultimate high-rank Jhen Mohran event begins today and lasts through Wednesday. The final run will be April 29th, and 30th, the last 2 days of MH Tri online.
Oh yeah, just wanted to point out that aside from food/shakalaka/easier monsters, the other reason to do village quests is because not all monsters appear in the port. e.g. Ceadeus
Cha Cha puts it up for Villager request a little ways into High Rank Moga.
I can't recall everything, but I think pawprint stamps were one of the components.
Speaking of, I like the contrast between Cha Cha and Kayamba. Kayamba is obsessed with finding the Ultimate Mask and plundering its secrets, whereas Cha Cha is far more interested in inventing new masks of his own.
All masks are basically village related (many need to be traded from the captain). But they're definitely great. I can choose to have a reusable pitfall trap now, amongst other things. Plus I also have an artillery mask that which will let one shakalaka use the other as a projectile.
But Mock Melynx is great as he can "carve" even with nothing broken on the monster.

And he can get you "carves" even if you go for a capture.
Some masks aren't village requests, though. Some are Argosy trades. As are some dances and skills.
I've got a question about the Harvest Tour Quests:
I always finished them early after exploring the map and harvesting some stuff by returning the ticket.
But if you hold out the whole 50 minutes ... do you get more rewards or something? Or do you always get the same rewards no matter how you end the tours?
They're just for your own benefit, harvesting whatever you want. No special rewards.
It's worth noting that you can turn in account items whenever you want through the red box, it's not just for mission objectives. It took me until halfway through high rank to figure that out.
Somebody said if you keep increasing mask mastery and chum-chum level and have them both wearing cat masks, they'll team up and go nuts with bombs together?!
In general as chum-chum level goes up, they start to work in sync, e.g. dances and attacks. I think it begins around Level 4. Level 3 I think is the neutral level of no bonuses/penalties. Below that, they'll randomly leave because they don't want to be with the other guy.
I'm halfway to L5 now, and noticed a chat box this morning about dancing with the partner.
You can, usually far, far easier than you think with non-existant to minimal preparation, get by soloing everything in the game. Even things like Jho, something I would never want to solo in Tri where I was pretty much as min-max'd as you could get, got enough of a health nerf it's not too bad here. I'd imagine this will extend to the monsters you fight further along like Alateron or Dire Miralis and the multiple monster hunts (given the further health nerf of multiple monster hunts) at the end of G-Rank. Even if you have to cheese things a bit in the last two G ranks, soloing seems to be a viable option for those who want to take that route/challenge.
About half of my time in multiplayer has been duoing the guild quests (port) with a friend of mine. You and your wife will be just fine doing local multi. As you get better at the game, as long as you keep your gear semi-current (for us that meant barroth low rank armor to high rank, then high rank barroth armor to g rank) you guys shouldn't have much trouble getting into g rank and going from there.

For Cha-Cha, is there some way to have him NOT throw bombs? Or have him always throw bombs? I hate that I'm underneath the belly of something like a Gigginox or Barroth, and Cha-Cha will throw bombs at me, knocking me away from the monster, on my ass, waiting for him to come over and eat me.

If he's got a mask that gives him bombs then yeah, he's just gonna toss them out as he likes. Only way to stop it is to give him a mask with no bombs, or one that doesn't attack.
Also, the Barioth X armour looks amazing, like it's exactly the sort of thing I'd design myself if I was told to draw a MH armour set. Unfortunately I can't get rid of the Stam Recov Down if I want to keep the other skills I want, at least unless I find a Stamina +5/Evade +1 gem at some point.
The only problem with Barioth X (and other long coat/dress types) is the back part doesn't move so you have this weird clipping thing with your feet popping out of it whenever you run around. That said, it looks damn sexy when you're standing around looking badass.
I lucked out with an evasion +6 charm, so I'm able to pump it to evasion+2 and get rid of the stamina recovery down. Not sure what to do with the spare slots though, I guess boosting I've damage for when I get a better ice weapon.

I'm sad that MH4 isn't announced for WiiU. I've put 70 hours in on MH3U. I can't imagine the hand cramps I'll have to endure to play on my 3DS.
The CPP (or as I've heard it called: the stick boat) is an amazing gadget for hunting monsters. I have a 3DS XL, and finally gave in and imported the damn thing. It's fantastic! If MH4 comes out only for the 3DS, it won't be so bad.
Still though, I just hope the west GETS MH4.
Is there any word on whether it's coming to the US? I know I can import one, but it's the last thing keeping me from buying MH3U for 3DS and I'm trying to save money. :P
@Beltaine I wish I knew. Sadly the CPP 3DS LL (the XL tag in Japan) was cheaper to import until MH3U for 3DS released...now they can make more money importing it.
HOWEVER, I'm dumb and didn't check Play-Asia - they have it for $22.90, which is about how much it'd cost to purchase it here, and it's in stock. I'd recommend that avenue if you can!
Yeah, then add about $20 shipping unless you want to wait a long ass time (which still costs another $10)
The CPP XL has dropped a little actually on Amazon. Was like $45 a week or two ago, now it's about $38.50. Most of the people who wanted it ASAP already bought it, so prices are dropping.

- deliver 2 powderstones, or capture Lagiacrus (I found delivery easier solo)
- urgent with Duramboros which unlocks Kayamba
- kill Volvidon or Nibelsnarf (Volvidon is easy)
Cha-Cha returns and you have both.

Cha Cha stole the last Tailbone I needed! Now I just need one Fucium Ore to make a Heavy Divider+!
And, if I feel like farming one more tailbone, I could make Duramboros S armor, since Cha Cha stole his rarest carve.
Have I mentioned lately how much I LOVE the Mock Melynx mask?
How do you make that one? It sounds fun.
