This close to finishing up my Helios Z set! Just need 4 hairs and one CS for the belt! Then it's back to unlocking Alatreon.

Man, one day i gotta get me that helios set. Need to finish all my elemental armors first, though. So far got pink rathian for fire, ingot for lightning, ludroth for water, and bnaharba for status. Working on jade barroth and got only one bug left for finishing the aelucanth for dragon. Woooo!
And then do it all again for blademaster sets.
If you are wondering, this is precisely how i racked up 1000+ hours in tri without ever truly completing the game (forging alatreon weapons and armor is completion in my opinion)

I went through the quests to try all the different weapons, which is starting to feel like a huge mistake because now I have no idea what weapon at all I want to use.
The hammer and the charge axe probably gave me my fastest kills, both can put out nasty stun and damage. The short range on the hammer kind of blows, and obviously the charge axe is limited by its charges.
The hunting horn seemed cool too, especially playing with friends. Something awesome about beating a monster over the head with some bagpipes and then inspiring your friends.
The longsword was probably the most fun to use though? I like how its charge system encouraged you being consistently aggressive, with the fade slash thing letting you keep up the pressure while evading.
And the heavy bowgun seemed neat, but only if I was playing with friends, solo with it seems miserable. I just want to park on a high ridge and go into the mode where you can shoot 30 times without reloading and unload on some monster my friends are attacking.
I'm kinda in the same boat. There aren't many weapons I dislike using (though greatsword and both bowguns are pretty low on my list), so I'm constantly indecisive. I have noticed I've been gravitating toward hunting horn and gunlance more than the rest, so I guess that should be my cue.
How in the world do you do enough damage to one shot something like that? Piercing damage?
My guess is that a race condition gave it negative health.

Maaan i want that mh4!
I have a few friends in Japan, but it is so hard to play in Japanese. I imported MHP3rd, but had a real bear of a time doing ANYthing more specific than "bash monster till die"
It is really hard for me to decipher kanji, it all looks so confusing and i would spend simething like five minutes per word trying to match it up to the wiki or something.
Man i wish Capcom will release this in west! I wish so hard!

What should I be looking for in armor early on? Just raw defense? Skills?
I haven't settled on it for sure yet but right now I am leaning pretty hard towards learning the hunting horn, once I learned that it is actually rather viable solo my interest in it shot way up. Should I only chase after armors that have the master bagpiper skill or does it not matter that much?

What are we talking about? I mentioned one hitting Barioth on the last page. I looked into it a little more and it seems to be a fairly rare thing when hitting monsters that have just spawned, so it's only possible in multi-monster hunts.

The first thing to remember is that skills are just nice bennies. They let you tweak playstyle, they can assist in a specific way of playing, but they're in no way, shape or form required.
in TriU at least, Great Jaggi is an amazing early game set that'll see you through until you can get something like Volvidon armor - and after that, it's all about what do you value?
That said: It's hard to go wrong with anything that gives you attack up or Evade +1/+2 (increases the amount of invuln frames you get in a dodge roll - +2 in paritucalr can let you roll straight through some attacks).
Otherwise, it's very, very much about what do you want out of things, and then tuning your armor set around that.
As an example, in TriU I've got my "Mad Bomber" build - Bombardier for increased bomb/slime damage and guaranteed bomb combinations, and whatever the trap skill is that speeds up bomb/trap deployment, and gives you guaranteed trap combos.
And of course, the entire point is to talk into a fight with a mass of traps and bombs, as well as a slime weapon, and then combo everything to result in horrifyingly big explosions and monsters going "NUUU MY SPLEEN"
So just as an aside -- if I start up a new file, and go immediately to the port, and try to do the first hunting quest (hunt a Qurupeco)...
I'm not actually supposed to be able to manage that with the default shitty weapons, right? I'm talking about the supposed to be multiplayer stuff, where the box gives out 4x the amount of supplies et all? Or is that a good gauge of how good I am at dodging and comboing et all?

With starting weapons armor that quest is definitely doable but it will take a long long long time. I was within 10 when i finally got it. Damn peco kept blocking me with his flints. It is a great way to learn dodging and dps, if you can do it i would say you can be fairly confident in your ability to dodge, while applying proper DPS at the same time. Sacrifice too much of one for the other and you will either die or run out if time.

I love the hammer but sometimes it's like fuck, is there any way to attack this thing without getting immediately smacked down?
I did run off the lagiarcus, though. Time to kill a rathian and move to 5* village. Also made most of a Barroth set, so I've got Attack Up (M) and...no other skills. But with the attack boost and my frozen core anything bore resistant to ice is basically DoA.

Try using the faster hammer attacks, like the sliding uppercut (second charge instead of full third superpound). Against fast monsters i just uppercut them, you can also move around while charging so use that to your advantage. The exhaust property of every hammer should quickly tire monsters out, at which point you can get fancy with the superpounds and whirlies

On the advice of this thread I am plugging away at my Great Jaggi set, three out of five pieces so far and the difference is already very noticeable.
I didn't realize quite how bad the armor on the starting armor was (it helps that I only know now the kanji for armor).
I am able to handle the bulk of the fight against the big Jaggi just fine. Get my buffs up, hit and dodge until I see good spacing and vault onto his back for a stab party (I am back to the insect staff after some fiddling, riding on monsters backs is just too cool. Also I fed my Beetle enough stuff that he makes a fire explosion when he hits people now, RAD). My problems arise when he starts running away. I feel like I am taking a lot more time to kill him when I get to this stage than I need too. I can't get my bug buffs going, its hard to vault on him when he is running away, and I only get a few swings in before he goes to a different zone and I have to poke around randomly to find him. Any pointers for once he turns tail?
Yeah, starting armor in most of the MH games usually has like 1 point of defense a piece. So pretty much anything you make even if it's like 4 defense a piece, is going to be pretty noticable.
As for tracking a fleeing monster, do you have any paintballs? If you're unfamiliar, it's a pink icon that looks like this:
Then he'll show up as a pink dot on the map, wherever he may run to.
I hope you jerks are happy, I started up my file after a long break because of all this monster hunting talk.
Seriously though, it's nice to step back in. Thanks for rekindling the fire, thread!
And as for hammer tactics, remember: apply directly to the forehead. Repeat as necessary. :P
Knocking out a monster with a manly golf swing has to be the most satisfying experience in monster hunter, at least for.
Especially against really squirmy enemies, like Barioth, i get a sense of glee and mentally shout "sit DOWN!" When i pop them in the head and they go flopping on the ground

Can anyone suggest a bladed weapon to compliment my hammer? I'm kind of over the SA at this point, but I'd like an alt weapon with better reach and the ability to cut tails for some fights. I'm thinking maybe LS: I kind of like duals but they have the same range issues as the hammer.

I'm going to suggest an option you may not have thought about. Both the Lance and Gunlance can cut tails and have a phenomenal reach.

I'm not a huge fan of the lance move set, but I haven't even tried a gun lance. Might have to give that a try tonight and just see how it works.
Lance always has and always will be the superior weapon to monster hunt with. Hammer will always be its close second.
Sarcasm and opinions out of the way, I couldn't stand the GL movelist in MH2 nor TriU. Movelist felt like trash and wasn't seeing any positives over the lance even skill 'ing for maximum wyvern fire and slime so explosions as often and powerful as possible. Then someone linked me the below video a few months ago. The move list still feels like trash to me, but after watching the vid I at least understand the perks GL offers.
As far as SA goes, have you tried sticking to power phials and solely using sword mode? I've gone back and forth with a person or two on the boards a while back about the (lack of) merits of axe mode, but when I use SA I do nothing but go from sheathe to sword mode (so the phial is active), then reload or sheathe. Repeat that process ignoring axe mode entirely. I couldn't stand the SA in Tri, but only used it a handful of times since I ran lance or hammer 99% of the time anyway. Tried SA again here, felt the same way until min-max 'ing a bit in the end game with the Lucent Narga SA and Miralis armor sticking with sword mode. Had I used the SA like that before I likely would have ran it a lot more in both Tri and ranking up in TriU.
While I do love the Gunlance I am at heart a pure lancer.
Once you get the hang of how the Lance works you pretty much never stop attacking the monster and every one of those hits is always a surgical strike to exactly where you want to hit. It's a pretty glorious thing.

The one perk to axe mode in Switch Axe is that it has some really good reach. Sword mode is generally where you should hang your damage dealing, but don't discount Axe mode as complete rubbish.

Once you get the hang of how the thing works you pretty much never stop attacking the monster and every one of those hits is always a surgical strike to exactly where you want to hit. It's a pretty glorious thing.
Lance also lets you use pretty much any and every skill to stay on top of a monster. Want to be a wall who can block everything, always, forever? You can. Want to evade through everything, including roars? You can. Even back in MH1 it felt like lance let you tweak how you played just that tiny bit more than any other weapon. Movelist always felt better than anything else too even in MH1. And I've liked pretty much every weapon in the game since the beginning, lance just feels that much better.
But, like I said, hammer is a ridiculously close second. Droppping hammers on monster heads is something few games approach on the overall fun level. Evasion and Ear Plugs being my two favorite skills make the hammer that much better too.

At least in TriU I've never had sword mode miss due to length/size/etc. I'm always able to hit what I want. Like I mentioned a few months ago I get why you'd want to use axe mode, but I find the moveset rubbish; just boring to use. Sword mode does some crazy shit, especially end game, so that made SA fun enough to use. I only mentioned that since he said he was over SA so it's something to try out as silly as it always sounds when I say try focusing on sword mode only.

Gunlance is so snazzy! So poetic even. I am best with SnS and Lance, but i must admit that the range of aggression versus defense is so amazing with gunlznce. In my opinion it is the most precise of all weapons as far as damage goes. If you know you got an extra half second to attack, with other weapons you are already committed, with gunlance you can just squeese of a powered up shot, or overhand swing, or wyvernfire if you want to risk it. Damage efficiency is where the gunlance always shines for me

I've found that Lance is mostly reactive, where as the Gunlance is more offensive and proactive. The fact that the GL has a shield means almost nothing.
I say the Lance is mostly reactive because your movement is perhaps the slowest with the shield out. I feel that the GL is faster. And the Counter Attack move should do a significant portion of your damage I think say something. Attacking regularly is alright, but the Counter Attack is where it shines.
As opposed to the Gunlance which has more maneuverability (can jump side to side) and has more offensive power. There is no counter attack, and if you're using the shield with a GL, I would go so far as to say you're doing it wrong. It's a great "Oh Shit" kind of defensive ability, like how the Great Sword can block. It's a feature of the weapon, but not the entirety like it is in the Lance.
Mostly, I use Lance any more because I always end up getting ganked by a monster when reloading as a gunner, and since I don't have much time to sit still, I have a very low damage output which is kind of like "why bother bringing L Ron Howard along when he doesn't attack very much". With the Lance I've accepted that the monster will be in my face, and then I will shove my shaft into his mouth and he will like it.

Well yeah, but if your shield is out you should be countering or you're playing with maxed out stamina and defensive skills to block everything. But even then, you're only doing that to stay on top of the monster just like evading through everything with a hop. TriU has brought us a long way and greatly expanded the moves each weapon currently has, but I'd still say lance is one of the most offensive weapons you can use.
You also always charge to re-posistion if sheathing isn't going to work for whatever reason. In TriU I've ran duals way more than anything else since I barely used them in 1 and dos before their absence in Tri. But even with the slide and mobility they offer, it's normally easier to just sheathe and sprint to wherever I'm going. When I switch to lance I don't feel much slower, certainly no slower than switching to any of the other weapons besides SnS which I'd pair with DS for mobility.
All that said, it speaks volumes to the weapons in any MH game, but especially now in TriU and 4. Just like my comments about SA only being fun in sword mode, it's all about running what you like. Every weapon will offer you something that's fun to use, and likely has some broken stuff you can skill it around if you want to.

That's what I love about the lance. For me the reactive nature of it is appealing.
I mean when a monster charges most players they move out of the way but when they charge a lancer the lancer simply says "No".
"No, Barroth, this shall not be. You see, you thought you were the one attacking me, in reality, it is I who is on the offensive. Your charge proves your animalistic stupidity, for you are, literally, charging headlong into your own demise. Come at me, if you dare and test how quickly you can expedite your own undoing! En Garde!"

I've personally felt that Lance has had inferior killtimes since Monster Hunter Freedom 2. It's been that way for a while, sadly, probably because of its great performance in prior games. Longsword, Hammer, and Heavy Bowgun dominated fast solo killtimes in MHF2 and MHFU (Dual Blades occasionally poked up there for killtimes on monsters no one cares about, like Basarios). In Tri, Lance made a bit of a comeback and Hammers got a nerf (the golfswing went from 100% weapon damage to 60%... ouch!), but Greatswords and Longswords were still faster for solo killtimes. In Portable 3rd, Light Bowguns suddenly became awesome because of the ridiculous way that elemental damage buffs stacked and the new Rapid shot skill. I don't have much data on killtimes for Portable 3rd, however (other than remembering how evil Light Bowguns were... you literally could kill a High Rank Agnaktor with ONLY Dragon Rapid in less than 4 minutes).
In 3U, I'm not sure that lances can even compete for damage (evading, maneuvering, positioning, and blocking are all fine), even (or especially) with Slime. Don't get me wrong, I love using Lances (3rd most used weapon in most Monster Hunters for me). They have their advantages, and certainly if you don't have the experience of dancing around a monster with a Longsword or Duals, they are preferable and get you faster killtimes. It's just that once you learn a monster's patterns and how to avoid the hits, most of the advantages of a lance evaporate (blocking, close-in evades, pressure stabbing, counter-hits). They don't have the DPS that they used to, especially with head-locking pretty much gone. I can't think of a single monster that I'd rather use a Lance on, as opposed to another melee weapon, but it could be that some of the "lance-able" monsters are also better to kill ranged, for me.
I'm not saying you are wrong, Column, but I call into question the superiority of Lances in terms of DPS at the high end of skill (where you aren't worried so much about slotting Evade or having a block, because you know the fight so well). They've been hit pretty hard with the nerf stick over the years, with only a few bright shining exceptions in the past (I miss the Darkness Lance... Purple Sharp, high damage, AND paralyze).
Also, I don't want to give anyone the impression that any weapon in particular is inferior. All of them are viable to solo-kill every monster in this game. I'm unsure if you can solo kill G-rank download Jhen Mohran with a Lance, but it probably involves a lot of Slime and explosions (like other weapon types, pretty much).

Sorry, I was talking about only with the weapon out. I think even with the SA, GS, and GL, the Lance is slower. It just feels that way, to me. Obviously your character barely moves with the shield blocking.
Obviously, to be a somewhat decent Lance user, you must be putting your weapon away to maneuver.
As far as kill times; since I suck, I think I'm better at killing things with the Lance than the LBG, but it depends on the monster. The Easioth is a joke with ranged weapons. With the lance, I've found him harder to stick to because he moves around too much. The same goes for the Sand Barioth and Nargacugases (Nargacugeese?).

I think there can be no denying that Greatswords and Hammers will always beat out other weapons for speed kills. It is not even the weapons themselves, but the freedom of skills. I had Crit Draw, Attack Up M Heroics Adrenaline and Focus back in Tri for my greatsword set and i literally broke peco's flint on my first swing. When you know monster patterns from memory nothing beats the power of a critical fully charged greatsword smack, nothing can match it pure and simple.
The power of lances goes to the less learned/experienced/talented hunters like me and most hunters out there. When you do not know all the hitframes if monsters you will simply do much better with lance, because you cannot dodge perfectly every time.
I try doing Heroic runs, but even though i have two thousand hours or more into the franchise i simply am not talented enough. I will never get there so my lance will always outperform my greatswords. That peco run? Yeah after breaking his flints and beak with less than a half dizen swings, bastard caught me with his tail and morda was no longer heroic...he was scared and crying

I'll fully admit I'm advocating lance more from a fun and take advantage of all the action in the game way. Not an objective number crunching way. When duoing with someone who's not very well geared my kill or cap times are low enough I never think about crunching numbers; let alone if there's three or four people to fill a whole party. I've also mentioned how biased I am on controls and weapons before due to only playing console releases. MH1, dos, Tri, and TriU are all I've played. Never owned a PSP to play those releases. I rarely solo stuff, and if I do, I run Dire Miralis armor with Brachy duals, Lucent Narga Duals, or Lucent Narga SA. Those are by far my best kill time weapons regardless of rank. Probably half of my time in TriU has been spent using status DS 's to see how often I can paralyze, sleep or poison a monster. So I'm sure I'm a terrible judge on how to properly play MH for a low kill time other than more slime.
With all that in mind, in TriU it doesn't feel that different to me using the lance compared to other weapons. But that's probably due to me using that weapon more than anything else since MH1 released such a long time ago now. I could lance in my sleep at this point if my goal is just not to die and don't need to do particularly well. But again that's personal feeling, I normally forget to bother checking times at the end of the mission since it isn't a big deal to me. Like, you mention LS being so good, and I can totally see it, but I'm pretty ass with it in TriU. I have a hell of a time staying glued to a monster and keeping my blade fully charged compared to how easy I can stay on a monster with other weapons so I know I'm missing damage. I might just be missing out on a lot more damage than I thought it turns out. Hell, I thought GL was useless until that video I re-posted showed it did better damage than I ever thought it did.
On the objective front, how are people timing it and what kind of prep are they using? Like, for me, if I'm trying to kill something ASAP solo (usually some random LR or HR part I need, I can almost always find a GR room for multi) I'm using Dire Miralis armor with Brachy duals, skilled for Bombardier, and eating for Felyne Pyro. Every now and then I'll switch to the Lucent SA and my times will be similar. Lucent Duals usually take a bit longer to kill with no matter how I push them, affinity, status, attack up, some mixture, whatever. But that's the extent of my prep. I'm not chugging drugs, stamina pots, sleep bombing, trapping outside of a cap, sharpening all the time, focused on minimizing how often I sharpen, etc., etc.
Then there's armor skills, how much focus do they put on those? Dire Miralis and a good charm allows you to get some epic stuff. Rocksteady, Attack Up Large, Affinity+3 is going to help a hell of a lot and makes something like the Lucent Narga switch axe absolutely nuts. Like, almost MH1 head locking level of nuts given how often and easily you stagger monsters. That would also make LS 's stronger too I'm sure, but does that push the Lucent SA to the same level of the LS? Maybe some other weapons get pushed that high too at the end game?
With lance in mind, I thought in Tri the fully upgraded Alatreon lance was one of, if not the, best weapon in the game. It got the best end of the damage formula, sharpness, how often you could attack, etc. to trump everything else. If that wasn't true, and with how often I've heard that parroted online, something I've done myself, what was the best weapon in Tri then?
I'm not sure how that will read, not trying to be a dick at all in case it comes off as such. I'm genuinely curious about how people prep for their kill times when actually min-maxing. For as much time as I put into MH, unlike every other game or hobby I've put time in, I never number crunch or read about it online other than chatting here. I've always been happy enough with my play and felt like my completion times have been low enough, especially since I almost exclusively play in groups even when that means randoms, I'd need to spend more time gathering mats to prep to significantly reduce them. So I've always just gone meh, and then smack things on the head with a hammer or poke them with a lance. Given what you, and someone else who was asking about objective metrics to compare them to prior games a while ago, have said there's probably a lot more than being too lazy to parse the damage formula I'm absolutely clueless about.
Unsurprisingly failed to find a CCPro XL in the wild so grabbed one from amazon
Didn't even think they existed in the wild. I got mine directly from Nintnedo's online store.
They don't. Only available via Nintendo's online store, or apparently Amazon.
I'm eyeballing the new game button on ye old MH3U. I have like 110 hours in my old save, but most of that was wasted time. Have nothing of note, and nothing other than my Dual Swords, which I honestly ain't enamored with (just couldn't get used to dodging with them). Hm. Start over from scratch, or just try out some new weapons in my current file?
Edit: Although, I do admit that I love Dante mode and it's free ESP. Heck, that alone let me kill a lot of things I frankly shouldn't have been able to harm.
Edit2: Thought: Maybe instead of starting over MH3U, I could scratch my "start over from nothing" itch by getting MH4 from the eShop -- I imported a 3DS for DQM Terry's Wonderland. Might need to go get a SD for that.

And then do it all again for blademaster sets.
If you are wondering, this is precisely how i racked up 1000+ hours in tri without ever truly completing the game (forging alatreon weapons and armor is completion in my opinion)

I have no idea what I should use now! Oh well.
My guess is that a race condition gave it negative health.

I did run off the lagiarcus, though. Time to kill a rathian and move to 5* village. Also made most of a Barroth set, so I've got Attack Up (M) and...no other skills. But with the attack boost and my frozen core anything bore resistant to ice is basically DoA.

Seriously though, it's nice to step back in. Thanks for rekindling the fire, thread!
And as for hammer tactics, remember: apply directly to the forehead. Repeat as necessary. :P
As for tracking a fleeing monster, do you have any paintballs? If you're unfamiliar, it's a pink icon that looks like this:
Then he'll show up as a pink dot on the map, wherever he may run to.
Also the data transfer process is ridiculously cute.
Didn't even think they existed in the wild. I got mine directly from Nintnedo's online store.

I'm going to pick one up soon. I am managing the controls okay without one but it seems really handy.
Knocking out a monster with a manly golf swing has to be the most satisfying experience in monster hunter, at least for.
Especially against really squirmy enemies, like Barioth, i get a sense of glee and mentally shout "sit DOWN!" When i pop them in the head and they go flopping on the ground

I'm going to suggest an option you may not have thought about. Both the Lance and Gunlance can cut tails and have a phenomenal reach.
XBL:Phenyhelm - 3DS:Phenyhelm
Here's the GL tutorial.
Once you get the hang of how the Lance works you pretty much never stop attacking the monster and every one of those hits is always a surgical strike to exactly where you want to hit. It's a pretty glorious thing.
XBL:Phenyhelm - 3DS:Phenyhelm

I mean when a monster charges most players they move out of the way but when they charge a lancer the lancer simply says "No".
XBL:Phenyhelm - 3DS:Phenyhelm
