Eeeh. I'll have to see. I'm remembering why I went DS in the first place (spamming status effects) and might give that a try again; I'm also remembering what got me to quit -- dodging as DS is freaking WEIRD.
My problem is that all the weapons (save like, hunting horn and bow) are appealing in their own way, so I go into choice shock, heh.

Funnily the hunting horn or the bow would be what I would use if I wasn't insect staffing it up.
I am learning that is what is great about this game, the weapons are different enough, and all of them work well enough, that you can just find whatever seems awesome to you and run with it. I mean, yeah, you may not get perfectly optimal solo kill times but, having fun with your weapon is more important than that to me.

This is kinda what I'm facing, too. I think I'm now leaning towards a 'contrast' to the hammer with some elemental and effect spam. I've heard sword/shield is pretty decent there, might try that out.

SnS one of the best elemental/status weapons. DS do good job, but SnS allows more room for error, plus you can bash them into exhaustion to make them easier to cut up

Charge axe is pretty fun, and it looks really cool, but I don't really get it yet. I get the very basics of charging it and spending charges, and I noticed I seemed to be able to KO monsters with the charges, even though the blade and the axe are both cutting weapons. Not really sure if I can change the phials for the charges or what yet though.
I am not going to use it though because I am very new to the series and I am avoiding weapons that can block in general. I found when I tried them I fell into a very Dark Souls style of play and trying to block everything and that just doesn't work in this game. So I am forcing myself to learn how to position and roll to keep myself safe. Once I have that down I can learn where to work blocking in.

Are you stuck playing solo or can you play multi in some fashion? I mentioned it in the long post at the bottom of last page but around half my play time has been using status DS in TriU with a lot of status lance and SnS thrown in. I blame the fish hook SnS from MH1 that put things to sleep for turning me into a status fiend. And in TriU it makes a return. Status is such a fun way to play that makes the group dynamics even better since most people are gearing themselves for damage already.
If you're stuck solo status is meh after a few fights and I get where you're coming from about starting over. You start to realize how much longer shit it taking to get done and the fun slowly wears off. Poison is alright, especially with later game weapons. More so for monsters weak to it. I mentioned the Lucent Narga duals earlier, and while hardly OP, are pretty good solo weapons, fantastic group weapons. Sleep is okay if you plan on sleep bombing. If not it's better than paralysis but not as nice as poison, especially late game. Paralysis seems bleh no matter what solo; tried running Awakened Green Narga duals for the better damage and crit with a little paralysis and the opposite spectrum with the Cha-Cha Scarecrows but stuff took at least twice as long to kill regardless.
But you have some progress and its really easy to switch over to another weapon to keep the progress going like Crawfish said. You can always use the duals to do some monsters below your current progress line, build a few up, then run with those lines to continue. You'll probably even be able get some new armor out of the runs with all the left over mats you'll be collecting, or sell them for zenny. Likewise, depending on how far you are, you have farm progress over a new game to farm nulberries keeping the cash flowing. Save starting over for MH4 since it sounds like you're thinking about importing it/playing it if you're already in Japan.
I'm pretty sure my lance love may end up turning itself into a charge axe obsession one day.
I'm hoping TriU did well enough on the WiiU and 3DS they go this route with 4 for reasons like that. Being able to play with all the new stuff in HD while offering the same game all the way down to the save is such an awesome thing to do. A 4G release some time next year would be awesome news. Would probably be long enough for Japan to still buy it for the 3DS, and then hopefully Capcom and Nintendo would see good enough returns world wide they bring another MH over to the US and EU after that. I know Capcom isn't in nearly the same position as Platinum getting Nintendo funding for Bayo2, but maybe Nintendo could grease the pot for a similar TriU style release for 4G or whatever they'll call it.
I don't remember what the numbers were like but, WiiU small user base and all aside, TriU didn't bomb right? Can't remember how it sold compared to Capcom's expectations.

There are two types of phials. The starting one has a KO phial where a hit to the head with the phial discharge move will cause KO damage. The other phial is an element discharge phial but i haven't sen any of the streamers use one of those yet so i can't comment on it.
Other interesting things to note is that the block seems to have no chip damage but does reduce sharpness and there are a few moves that can be charged during attack for extra damage not directly related to the phial charging and discharging mechanic.
I may or may not be watching a lot of gameplay videos of it to get a feel for it early.
Mostly just huntin' monsters.

Good to know, thanks! If you have any basic things you want me to try out with the charge axe I can try and let you know.
Also if you happen to pick up any info on the insect staff sharing would be great! Reading around at work today I learned that I can make my bug attack multiple times once it is out, which I didn't know about. And I might be able to charge launching the bug? I can't wait to experiment when I get home.

If you can provide all the info you could in the Insect Staff, that'd be fantyastic - i've been hunting down videos of gameplay fotoage when i can, and it looks ridiclously freaking cool ,but it's hard to grok what you can do with it - lots of people i've seen playing it are eitherj ust spamming the polevault onto a mosnters back, or failign to use the bug.
I will lay down when I have figured out so far with the insect staff.
Holding down right trigger will put you into an aiming mode, when you release the trigger you will shoot out a little spore ball. This will mark the enemy, but as far as I can tell doesn't do any damage (or at least not any appreciable damage).
Right trigger plus X will launch your bug off of your arm. It goes straight in the direction you are facing, with some homing towards what you marked. Once it has hit the enemy or gone some distance it will try to stick close to the mark. Based on the bugs type and what you have fed it it has different speeds, and I have to assume different maneuverability. I only have a beetle right now and he sort of acts like a dumbfire missile, he will arc a little towards the target but that is it. When the bug hits he will get a color based on where he hit.
Monsters head or attacking parts gets you red.
Monsters legs gets you white.
Monsters body gets you orange.
Monsters tail gets you green.
I need to test this but apparently pressing trigger plus Y again once the bug is out will cause it to attack again. I think I have done this accidentally, as I have noticed the bug getting a different extract while it was out. So, this could be useful for when you are fishing for a certain extract.
R plus A calls the bug back to you, returning it and giving you what extract it has if any. White, orange and red are all buffs that stick around, green I think is just an instant heal. White makes you move faster, orange ups your defense, red not only ups your damage but puts you in your equivalent of demon mode (or whatever it is called) for a DS user. Your basic swing hits three times instead of one. Your jumping attack hits multiple times instead of once, etc. It's a pretty huge difference. It also seems like the more colors you have at once the bigger buff they give you. Generally I don't engage until I have extracted at least red, but generally red and white, and then I fish for orange while fighting. Once I have red and white I launch my bug point blank as part of combos where I am near the part for the color I want to add or refresh.
Oh, before I forget, the weapon does slashing damage but you can press R after any melee swing to bring the blunt end of the staff around, this not only does impact damage but also marks whatever part you hit. The bug also does KO damage, but this might be based on what bug you have and what you have fed it.
The pole vault is R plus B, it seems to have no invulnerability and had some start up time but you can avoid a lot of things just by moving out of the way, costs as much stamina as a roll it feels like, maybe more. In the air you can either do your air slash or you can shoot your pheromone ball. Air slashes, especially when you have red so you hit multiple times on the way down, seem to have a pretty good shot at knocking a monster down into letting you ride it. I am trying not to just spam vault. My general game plan is to get my buffs up at a distance, focusing on defensive play. Once my buffs are up I focus on getting in safe hits, and keeping my buffs up. Only when the monster ends up at the correct distance (or I can predict where it is going to end up) do I vault and try to land on it. I am still working against very early on monsters but, generally I would wail on a great Jaggi for a bit and once I got the right set up I would vault and hit it and get to go right into getting to ride it. If I tried to vault on it right from the very start I would just generally get some air slashes but no ride. I think you need to soften the monster up a bit first. If you spend all your time vaulting around I think your damage is probably going to end up lower.
That's everything off the top of my head, I will post more if I remember anything or if I learn anything new.
So, I tried sword/shield. I think I'm in love. It's like blinding fast and so responsive. I don't even have good skills for it yet, but it feels like I can be cery aggresove and still dodge out ASAP.
I now have a fire/water version at about the same tier as my existing hammer stock. Exciting.
Okay, so, you can definitely charge the bug before your launch it. The end of the staff glows green and then brighter green. If you charge the big up before launching he moves much faster, I assume he hits harder too, and also he does a cool little barrel roll.
You can also issue further attacks to the bug once he is out. This is where pheromone marking plays a big role. Without pheromones he will just charge in the direction you originally launched him, with pheromones he will charge at the marked spot. He doesn't home, he charges in a straight line, but that line will start aimed at the make spot. Depending on how fast I input the orders I could tell him to attack 4 extra times. Not sure if there is a limit on orders per time he is out, or a time limit, or a distance thing or what. If I went slower I got less orders though. If I did two follow up attacks after a charge attack sometimes the third attack would also seem to be a charge attack. I need to do a lot of experimenting it seems. When you can no longer issue orders the back end of the staff closes up and the bug meanders back to you.
So this is actually good news, even though it seems like a non-answer -- it's been my experience that PR companies refuse to engage at all if they have bad news or feel they will have bad news later. The fact that they are recognizing us wanting MH4 in the US/EU means they probably are planning on it... eventually.
Edit: Here's better news. It's being leaked onto various online stores. Release date of December 2013:
I would just continue, personally. Could always sell you old swords to fund whatever you decide to equip. At the very least, it saves you some farming for cash and materials.

Well, actually... I bought a WiiU when the local big box store (Fred Meyer) had a sale -- buy a WiiU Basic, get a free game. They let me get the black deluxe instead of basic, and I got MH3U... and quickly burned out, since I was pretty much doing nothing but MH3U on the 3DS with all my free time.
I didn't have much luck with the WiiU's online play though, since it seemed like you had to just jump in to random rooms and hope you weren't being a bother. Maybe I'll start doing what @Dritz has been doing and just announcing when I create a room in here or something.

Yeah, that's my thing. The combination of dodging problems (although I seem to remember having a breakthrough last time I played) makes it feel like I'm just trading blows a lot of the time and, well... yeah. I got the Slime DS, upgraded them the one time I could, and they're... not bad. I imagine if I got specific gear to increase the slime effect they'd be better -- right now I pretty much only use the Wroggi set, although the, er, fire-anteater... set wasn't bad.
Which pretty much sums up my save file, heh -- a lot of stuff to support a specific weapon and playstyle (DS + Sharpness armor) and nothing else of value. Hence the "why don't I just start over and see everything all fresh-like" thing.
I'm actually tempted to grab a Vita at some point to try God Eater, just for comparison.
Since Vitas have been getting cheaper I've been meaning to get one as I never played Freedom Unite, but there's also God Eater and Ragnarok Odyssey, which is apparently kind of Monster Hunter like.

Don't forget the upcoming Phantasy Star Nova, which appears to be a MH clone. Apparently it's not the first Phantasy Star game that's gone the MH clone route, either.
I'd be surprised if they could get MH4 out by December of this year, I feel like there is a lot to translate. I do hope that it sees release in the west though.

Hahaha. If we see vanilla MH4 it'll be late next year, man. That's best case scenario. It took them 9 months to get Monster Hunter Tri to western shores. MH3U took a freaking year! There is no way that MH4 gets anywhere near our part of the world this year.

Oh, dumb question -- I've gotten a ton of streetpasses from setting up a home streetpass relay. Is there any use for them in MH3U? I heard something about bug or butterfly armor?

I ordered MHP3rd from play-asia.com
I got my stuff quickly and fairly so i do not think it is shady site
Difference is that i did not need a japanese PSP, the 3DS is not as nice and the american one will not play MH4 or i would import it instantly

Do not get Ragnarok Odyssey. Get Soul Sacrifice instead. Ragnarok Odyssey is the most mediocre MH clone you could possibly play. God Eater is pretty fun, though, and I can highly recommend it. The bullet editor alone is worth playing the game. I love shooting orbs into the sky which rain down three homing lasers that explode into MORE lasers on impact.
But definitely get MHFU first, of course. Be sure to map the right analog stick to the D-pad so you can manipulate the camera with it.

You can but the results can be inconsistent. I wouldn't do it for major weapon or armor parts, but more common combo ingredients turn up more often than not.

I mean, clearly hammers are best but everything else makes for a great second place.
(Hammer is actually only my third most used weapon in 3U, heh)

You can always use the duals to do some monsters below your current progress line, build a few up, then run with those lines to continue. You'll probably even be able get some new armor out of the runs with all the left over mats you'll be collecting, or sell them for zenny. Likewise, depending on how far you are, you have farm progress over a new game to farm nulberries keeping the cash flowing. Save starting over for MH4 since it sounds like you're thinking about importing it/playing it if you're already in Japan.

Or getting Goa Magara to the face.

I now have a fire/water version at about the same tier as my existing hammer stock. Exciting.

The non answer is a step towards localization though and some good news that we're moving in the right direction.

I'm actually tempted to grab a Vita at some point to try God Eater, just for comparison.

Hahaha. If we see vanilla MH4 it'll be late next year, man. That's best case scenario. It took them 9 months to get Monster Hunter Tri to western shores. MH3U took a freaking year! There is no way that MH4 gets anywhere near our part of the world this year.
Currently playing: GW2 and TSW
Unless they started already, which they very well may have -- didn't MH3U finally get the sales numbers they were hoping for?
If it is like guild card sharing on the wiiu then there is a great use.
You get to send your friend hunters out on quests and they will bring back stuff you cannot get yourself. The stuff they bring back lets you craft the Aelucanth set which is a damn snazzy set which boosts Dragon Attacj and has some othe skills.

That would be a very un-Capcom first. I'll confidently bet a $60 Steam title of your choice that NA doesn't see MH4 before next year

I would love for you to get to keep that delicious $60 because i want MH4 more than any other game ever. More than the d3 expansion or even Dark Souls 2. And that is saying a lot considering i am a rabid fan of both

I like using hired hunters to farm Pale Extract from Giggis. After making its armor and weapons, that fight gets really old so I let the bots handle it.

I have a friend with whom I've played, who is a maxxed out GR Slime SA.
He's failed against a LR Jaggi. With 3 others. That are in my pool to send out, not the randomized herobots that appear. And none of them were LR....
The city I live in is lacking balls, it seems.

I ordered MHP3rd from play-asia.com
I got my stuff quickly and fairly so i do not think it is shady site
Difference is that i did not need a japanese PSP, the 3DS is not as nice and the american one will not play MH4 or i would import it instantly

But definitely get MHFU first, of course. Be sure to map the right analog stick to the D-pad so you can manipulate the camera with it.
You can but the results can be inconsistent. I wouldn't do it for major weapon or armor parts, but more common combo ingredients turn up more often than not.
