I don't see how people missed the development he went through as he went through the story.
He starts out as a punk jock kid who whines about his dad a lot. By the end of the story he's resolved his issues with his father and is willing to sacrifice himself rather then have Yuna do it.
I liked Tidus but I would've liked him a lot of a lot more if the voice acting was to a better standard.
Btw, I like how Silpheed says Auron was awesome but Squall is an "emo fag". Their personalities are pretty damn similar. But hey, emo fag m i rite? olol. Je-sus.
Auron knew
that he was dead.
Did that make him go whining or bitching about how unfair everything was? Nope, he went ahead and did what had to be done all the way through the end without complaining like a little bitch. Which made him stand way taller than Squall or Tidus ever could.
Did you even play FFVIII? When did Squall ever whine or bitch at all? Like, once in the entire game? Sure he didn't like a lot of the things he was pretty much forced into but he didn't actually say anything most of the time. To 'bitch' or 'whine', words are required.
"I don't want anyone to talk about me in the past tense!" (Yeah, I don't remember the actual quote)
As much as I hate to geek out on one paticular game... I'd have to say that it is the ONLY game I'd ever make this claim about: you could write a totally legit english lit paper on Xenogears.
Because
and lets not forget about
either
Because anyone who says he is your typical sissy emo RPG main character isn't factoring in
Or the fact that he has to be like the only RPG character to seal the deal. Ever.
Plus, when you consider and
He has a pretty damn good reason for being a little emo.
Luke, I'm your father, wait, no... more specifically I'm you, but like from thousands of years ago, and I possessed your father, but now I want my body back (read: your body). I'm a super villian, because the *last* time your girlfriend was alive, it sent me off the deep end when she died, and I've decided that free will is only cool if I have ABSOLUTE power over EVERYTHING.
You know how it made you crazy the last time your girlfriend died? Well it made me crazy too. There is no God, because he would be a TOTAL cockfag to let that happen like that. So I'm going to invent God, because free-will is total bullshit if it makes you sad. Good thing there is this wounded planatary invasion engine that created all of us in an attempt to resurect itself. That will make inventing God and doing away with this free will garbage teh EZ.
I believe in free will. My whole psyche is based on the concept. So when these people who are like totally 'chosen' by 'God' for their pre-ordained 'roles' it totally negates my entire existance. But since free will really exists, thats fine, I'll just jump in and beat down this Fei/Lacan dude and take his place in destiny. But like WHAT THE FUCK, he beats me EVERY TIME! It is like it is somehow fucking IMPOSSIBLE to beat him or something! UGGnngghHH!!!! Good thing despite having the entire basis of my sanity up-turned, I can eventually come to re-think things.
I'd have to say that it is the ONLY game I'd ever make this claim about
You haven't played enough games.
Marathon totally tops that. PS:T, too. Vagrant Story dealt with a lot of deep shit, even if it was crippled by having half of its story cut out the game. SOTC and ICO could contend really easily for an excellent paper referencing The Hero With a Thousand Faces. I think there is far more, lurking in even the shallower games.

If you can identify a couple of themes and make a couple of parallels with other stories, you can right a convincing lit. paper on something. Even Mario provides pretty thought provoking source material. Probably more so that that over-the-top complicated nonsense you just posted.
Yeah, I haven't played the game. Wanna fighta bout it?
I think I came to terms with Aeris when I decided that she was never meant to be a love interest for Cloud. It was just a Zach thing that got jumbled up ins. The way I play it, Tifa is the only love interest in the game. Aeris is merely an obstacle to that relationship.
Yep, I teared up a little at the end of Advent Children, when you see Zach and Aeris are together. True love, y'all.
(Zach > Cloud)
Edit not working for anyone else? Anyway: Edited.
Aeris didn't give a shit...meanwhile, Tifa pours her heart out to Cloud and he's just like "Sup".
Not sure if he was mentioned yet, but MORTE from Planescape: Torment was super awesome-sauce. Fucker had so much persnonality, not to mention quick wit and his own agendas (I remember spending a lot of time trying to figure out how much trust I should put into him)...
Shit, after seeing the Killer 7 thread I want to play that so I can add it to my list. I did play it for a few levels, and loved it, but it was my friend's copy and he moved out, so I didn't get to keep going.
Aaaand... On-topic, yeah, Morte. And Hardin from Vagrant Story. And Durandal. And for one that wasn't on my list, Gordon Freeman somehow manages to have a real personality without uttering a word or ever seeing him in-game. It's entirely conveyed through his actions. That's a feat.
The STRENGTH of JUSTICE depends on the harm the INJUSTICE has caused. When the INJUSTICE is great enough, JUSTICE will lend me the STRENGTH needed to CORRECT it. NONE may stand against it. It will SHATTER every barrier, SUNDER any shield, TEAR through any ENCHANMENT, and lend its servant the POWER to PASS SENTENCE. KNOW THIS: There is nothing on ALL the PLANES that can STAY the hand of JUSTICE when it is brought against them. It may unmake ARMIES. It may sunder the thrones of GODS. Know that for all who BETRAY justice, I am their FATE. And fate carries an EXECUTIONER'S AXE.
I'm not sure why I had an instant connection with Saria. I just loved everything about the character, especially her song. A shame she really hasn't been in a Zelda game since, aside from a neat little cameo in Wind Waker.
I'd have expected
In there somewhere, too.
Ridley is one of my favorite video game characters as well. Sure, he's never spoken a line and not much is known about him... he is Samus' classic long time rival. There are some interesting story elements regarding Ridley if you dig deep enough, especially if you read the japanese comic/manga made for Zero Mission.... in particular Samus' childhood encounter with Ridley, just moments after he lead an attack destroying her home.
Also,
This guy, for reasons that need not explaining.

Planescape Torment has more than any of 'em; except maybe Pathologic.
Yes, I know it's sort of a given that if you play games, you're a Link fan, but I want to stress that TP Link is my most favorite incarnation of the character, because it's the first time that it felt like he had an actual personality, an actual opinion of things. His expressions told more about his character than any game before it, and it only made me love Link more.
Yes. I like that version the most also. I will probably get stoned for this, but I wouldn't mind Nintendo giving Link even more personality. If they commited to doing a good job, I would actually enjoy voice acting and a Link that spoke. I would still want him to be the strong silent type, but not a mute like he is now. I'm thinking Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke when I picture this in my mind.

Oh god, not the face!
As much as I'm liking Twilight Princess, I've got to say that I think Wind Waker Link had more personality. You could see emotions in his face, and he chose to go on this quest. TP Link was chosen by the goddesses; WW Link saved his sister and then just decided to keep going because it was the right thing to do.

Indeed. I would have included Ridley too but there were image complications at that point in time. Too long and unimportant to go into. But yeah, Ridley is the shit. He's been my handle long before I got in the interwebs. If Ridley's not in SSBB I'll cry. If Saria is I'll cry too, but for different reasons.

You'd be wrong. Xenogears is probably, and arguably, the deepest videogame in existence. If you include Perfect Works(which you should, really), then you get the full backstory and all of the themes prevalent in the world of the game. There are very few games that are almost as deep as Xenogears, those being Digital Devil Saga and of course it's spiritual sequel Xenosaga.

I got kinda meh on the Xenosaga series after the first one, but after getting some of the info from the Perfect Works, I wanted someone to give the original Xenogears team an budget to make a 250 hour RPG (about how long Xenogears would've had to been to include a lot of stuff that had been written) :rotate:
Xenogears is probably, and arguably, the deepest videogame in existence.
Whenever people say shit like this I just arch my eyebrow
like this
and stop listening. I'm sorry, but that's just a ridiculous claim. It's cool that you're so into xenogears and all, but turning it into a competition of "this is deeper and more meaningful!" "no, this is more deep and meaningful!" just demeans the entire fucking artform. Can we not just say that there are some amazing games out there with brilliant and inventive stories and leave it at that?
Jolee Bindo from Knights of the Old Republic. He was refreshing because he wasn't philosophically consistent and he knew it -- and it didn't bother him or cause some kind of intense personal conflict. I think Jolee was, in his way, the most profound character of both KOTR and KOTR II, because he showed that you could reject authority and choose to do the right thing for your own reasons. He didn't need an authority (Jedi, Sith, Republic or otherwise) to confirm his actions or beliefs.
I liked Kreia almost as much for her keen insight on the effect that power has on individuals and society, but ultimately her nihilistic world view turned me off.
You'd be wrong. Xenogears is probably, and arguably, the deepest videogame in existence.
No, that would be Planescape: Torment (half of which people tend to miss, I should add), followed by Pathologic.
Anyways, yes. Jolee Bindo was excellent.
I liked PS:T and found it very complex, but Xenogears just takes the cake.
Have you even read Perfect Works?
I'd like to add that Xenogears is not even in my Top 10 of best games I've played, and that I do believe there are other brilliant stories told out there.
Xenogears just blows them all away though, with it's mixture of Nietzchean and Jungian philosophies, along with the questioning of reality itself and God. Yep..
But you haven't played all games in existence. Unless you speak japanese, you haven't even played most games in existence. Do you play IF? If not, that's a big fucking chunk of pure philosophy gaming gone right there.
You can espouse Xenogears all you like - I haven't played it, and I'm sure it has a great storyline - just don't go saying something so Goddamn retarded. There are a lot of games out there.

So you're refuting my argument when you haven't even played the game.
Alrighty then. I'll take this all with a grain of salt.

I can't find the quote, but the part where Vhailor explains to the Nameless one what justice is...
Namelessone: I understand.
Vhailor : No you do not. Pray you never do.

Aside from being cool in concept, she had a basic vulnerability that was not shared by other Jedi characters (except maybe Juhani from KOTOR 1).
So you're refuting my argument when you haven't even played the game.
Alrighty then. I'll take this all with a grain of salt.
Yes, it was released outside the UK, since it's from Russia originally.
However, it was not released in the US.
