[NY/NJ] hangout thread: The thread for doing things in a place with people you know

tapeslingertapeslinger Space Unicorn Slush RangerSocial Justice Rebel ScumRegistered User regular
edited May 2014 in Debate and/or Discourse
So there are kind of a lot of us who like to hang out as a social group here in the Greater New York/6th Boro areas because hey, other people who also post on the Penny Arcade forums are cool. This thread is a more specific way to relay messages than to relay things via chat and hope everyone gets them, so post ideas or info about plans and what have you, and we'll add em here.

We have a small contingent of forumers, --primarily from the D&D section, but not exclusively; there are plenty of AC, TWB, and other subforum folks-- who get together on a fairly regular basis and new folks or visitors from strange and foreign lands (like Philadelphia or New Orleans or Seattle or SE++, or wherever) are always welcome to join us. We love to eat new-- er meet new people! Yes, yes. Meet.

Going to be in the NY/NJ area and want to hang out with people you may have met on the forums? Yes? Jolly good then.

additional pertinent information will be added to the header when specific events are planned, which will include who to PM for their address info or phone number in the event that you don't already have it, when the time comes.

So the unofficial list of people who live in the area and hang out is being developed here in this thread, if you want to be on said list post here or drop me a pm; this way people don't feel like they are left out of fun stuff when it happens. also don't blame me if I am a dumb and forgot to add you or remove you or whatever, no one reads the OP after the thread's like three weeks old, TSH.

I started adding people based on the principle that the more is the merrier and whatnot
let me know if you need to be added or moved :-P

I might organize this list by boro/state at some point. We'll see! I don't think so, though, because really, I'm too fucking lazy for that shit

    So: things.
There has been talk of places to go and things to do, and I think there are like twelve of you with birthdays in April, so we should probably think of something to do for that... maybe one big group birthday thing?

Odd. They had Cosplay in the 70's. It was racier, and less attached to labeled creations. A lot more Generic Space Alien girl, and a lot less Aayala Secura Twi'Lek Jedi.

edit: Quite possible they were messing with you to distance/elevate themselves.

the first thing I thought of when anarchris posted this was "Wendy Pini used to dress up as Red Sonja in the early comicon days..." it's funny they picked a different costume of hers for this.

At this point in my life, I find it weird when people DON'T dress up at Conventions. Developers at PAX East particularly drove this point home when a plethora of free swag/party invites/line cutting/etc was given out throughout the weekend to cosplayers by the likes of Squenix, Gearbox, Riot, Deep Silver, to name a few.

yeah, I wish I could get to PAX some year, my work schedule essentially precludes me ever being able to do it.
I'm hoping to rope syndalis and a couple of others from the Batman crew into doing Comicon, especially since they're trying to rope us into doing something else for next Halloween.

It's a Microsoft Sharepoint development shop, we work primarily with ASP.NET (C#) and SQL Server, with a smattering of Javascript here and there. We also do some out-of-the-box stuff with Sharepoint Designer.

I'm not sure if we're hiring any more, but I can ask around.

@alyceinwonderland today. I dont know what inwood is but it sounds sexually charged.

My daughters will be cosplaying princesses at the renfaire. Technically as a 3 and 5 year old they cosplay every day.

Your daughters cosplay as tiny crazy people. Here's a conversation I had with his 3 year old:

Her: "Uncle, I have a really important secret to tell you!"
    Me: "Okay, what is it?"
    Her: "Promise you won't tell?"
Me: Definitely, I won't tell anyone. What's the secret?"
    Her: "Nothing."

She then proceeded to ignore me when I asked about the secret, and forgot about it 30 seconds later.

    These conversations haunt me.

I...haven't missed a PAX East yet, lol.

And I LOVE NYCC/Comics and the like. Last year we did a various-Bat characters crew. We had a Damian Wayne, Steph Brown Batgirl, Steampunk Dick Grayson, Arkham City Riddler, a 60s Catwoman and myself as the Red Hood.

    2) Wait, you're old enough to have daughters, multiple, but have never been to a concert? Was that a joke?

No it's true. I've lived on my own since 18, got married at 23. All my money since I've had money has been toward survival. Hell I'm 30 and i'm only now starting to slowly pull out of survival mode (too slowly).

Oh and prior to 18 any money I was making was getting taken by my family for their survival/spending.

    nice!
will have to dig up the photos; we went a little more Bruce Timm/90s for most of them, though my Joker ended up being a little more Heath Ledger than I had intended, but it was fun. We won a $100 bar tab at a pre-Halloween party, but got rained out of actual Halloween events.
