My only problem with the XL is that I'd have to part with my Zelda 3DS to obtain it.
I got over this the moment I popped Etrian Odyssey IV out of the Zelda version and into my brand new red XL. After that first play session, I had no further qualms about doing a system transfer.

Man, I haven't played nearly as much as you guys. I really need to fix that.

I love the Activity Log. It appeals to my collecting, micromanaging nature. It hits me right at my core.
I decided to take a look at my Activity Log for the first time, to see if I've really gotten my money's worth out of this thing. Top Ten:
Mario Kart 7 - 21:27
OoT 3D - 9:18
Mii Plaza - 8:02
KI: Uprising - 6:23
StarFox - 4:31
eShop - 3:52 (lolwut?)
3D Classics KI - 2:32
TheatrhythmFF Demo - 1:39
Nintendo Video - 1:32
Pokedex 3D - 0:49
That's... 60:05.
In two years, that's it. Ouch.
I bought the Zelda 3DS bundle when it came out and haven't really used the thing much until Fire Emblem hit. I played some of Ocarina of Time in 2011, basically didn't touch the 3DS in 2012 other then to mess around with Netflix for the novelty of it, but this year, 61:51 of the 65:48 I have used my 3DS have been Fire Emblem whereas I only used my 3ds at all for 7:36 in 2012.
So how does this puzzle pieces over spotpass thing work?
Do people on your friendslist have to send them to you specifically or something?
Maybe twice a year you will get one puzzle piece sent to you over the internet from Nintendo to commemorate adding a new puzzle.
The rest of the puzzle pieces you have to streetpass to get, or buy with play coins. You can't ever buy pink ones, either. Nintendo relies on the fact that people across the world will end up with one of every pink piece just via random distribution, and they'll have to spread virally through streetpass from there.
Those are the only ways to get pieces. Conventions are a great way to accumulate a lot.
So... Etrian odyssey or fire emblem. I love both, I just need a quick shove in either direction. I'll get both eventually, just trying to keep my 3ds backlog less massive then other systems.
Both of them. Then Soul Hackers. Then when you're finished with none of them SMT IV will be out. Then Mario and Luigi. By the time you're done with two of those Pokémon X/Y will be out. Then early next year you'll have Bravely Default and EO 1 Remake.
That's just retail JRPGs. Denpa Men 2 will be good for eshop and who knows what sort of craziness will happen if they get GBA VC done finally and get Square on board.
I have a feeling Fire Emblem will be more manageable to start with, at least in the short term. Etrian Odyssey seems like the kind of game where you could get stuck minmaxing for quite some time.
...
God fucking damnit, that could just as well apply for Fire Emblem.
Alright and in this next scene all the animals have AIDS.
Fire Emblem will be the quicker game, probably. I've been playing them since the old ones so I'm fairly brutal about crushing them and moving on.
I've played every EO game but I tend to get distracted and rebuild my team a million times so it's usually much more of a time sink. Though I never beat EO3 because Yggdroid was so disappointing. Oh well. Truly saddening.

This one has 50 million pairings between males and females resulting in tons of support conversations you can never see in one playthrough and children with wildly different classes. Also its Lunatic mode really lives up to the name, and there's a bunch of DLC for it if you are inclined to extend the experience. It can really go on for a long time depending on how completionist you want to get.

Thankfully I'm not that type of person! I'll find one strong team, steamroll everything, then put it away. Maybe pick it up once a year and repeat it with a slightly different team.
Disgaea games have pretty much managed to burn out any semblance of completionist I used to harbor. They broke me.
There's not much of a used market for 3DS games, is there? Local GameStop had almost nothing. Target and best buy had very small new game sections, no deals/price breaks.

Most of the good 3DS titles are the kinds of games people keep instead of trading in (lots of replay value, hard to find physically after launch, has cool SpotPass/StreetPass features, etc.). Add to that the fact that almost everything is available digitally and the used market for the 3DS isn't huge.
Speaking of StreetPass, I got two StreetPasses on my walk to the grocery store today, which is quite rare. One of them was a Mii named Phoenix who said, "Objection!" and had spiky hair. He'd been playing Fire Emblem. I wish I knew who it was; I want to be friends!

I was passing through a small town and I got a streetpass from a cute little kid named Grapes who wore purple and had a purple cap on.
I've thought about selling my finished 3DS games, but I haven't found a good place to do so yet.
By the time Amazon or eBay take their cut and add in shipping fees, I'd get nearly the same from just trading it in to Amazon.
The buyer is typically supposed to pay the shipping costs.
They do, but in order to be in price parity with other sellers that are able to offer free shipping or lower shipping, you eat the cost of shipping in the price you ask for the game. I know I dont have to, just seems like I would never sell if I did.
So instead they sit in my game case. Which isn't bad, just would be nice to flip them for newer games sometimes.
I enjoyed when Goozex actually worked. But looking through it now I could easily send off everything I have; but then I would have a lot of points and nothing to spend it on as no one is offering and the waiting lists are fairly large.

Since Goozex has brought their Exchange back, I'm tempted to start trading stuff again. I'm hoping that the Exchange will drain a lot of points and those people will start trading as well, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
I've put in nearly 1200 hours on my 3DS since launch. That's... a lot.

Wouldn't bet against Pokémon X/Y getting one, nor Wind Waker or LttP2.

I can't find more than 5-10 used 3DS games anywhere I try and they always cost more than brand new internet deals.
