Moving on to a different topic, the Nintendo 3DS hardware incorporates a feature known as StreetPass.
When the Nintendo 3DS system is in Sleep Mode, this feature allows users who are playing any StreetPass-compatible game to automatically exchange game data with other users in close proximity who are also playing the same game.
StreetPass is very common in crowded Japan. In contrast, our American and European users seem to meet each other via StreetPass less frequently, and as a result, we have not seen a significant rise in the number of people who carry their Nintendo 3DS systems in Sleep Mode. When compared with our Japanese users, it seems that fewer people are experiencing the StreetPass feature on a daily basis.
This year we will release software that opens doors for new ways to play through the StreetPass feature, such as “Animal Crossing: New Leaf,” and I hope that more people around the world will be able to experience the benefits that StreetPass provides.
We will achieve that by taking advantage of Wi-Fi access points and implementing a StreetPass relay feature into the Nintendo 3DS hardware.
Starbucks and McDonald’s, among others, provide about 28,000 Wi-Fi access points, which are connected automatically to Nintendo 3DS, in the U.S. and 24,000 in Europe.
We are going to perform a system update that introduces a framework that uses these access points as StreetPass relay stations by this autumn. This will involve taking a Nintendo 3DS system in Sleep Mode to an access point which will then connect automatically and send StreetPass data to a server. At the same time, the Nintendo 3DS system also receives the StreetPass data of another user from the server. In this setting, data is not exchanged directly, but rather through a StreetPass relay station. Hence, as opposed to, say, Person A and Person B directly exchanging game data, data will be transmitted in sequence from Person A to Person B, and then onto Person C and so on.
But the surprising and magical feeling of exchanging data with someone you simply shared a location with is as real as before.
Previously the StreetPass feature required multiple Nintendo 3DS systems in Sleep Mode to be in the same location at the same time, but in this framework, you can exchange data with others by visiting the same location even at a different time, so we can certainly expect the use rate of the StreetPass feature to grow significantly.
Thank goodness. Finishing off puzzles will be so much easier now.

Cool. Now can I have more than 10 damn people in my plaza?!
Seriously though, the delay, even though I have no idea why there even is one, is not that bad. Watch_Dogs and Donkey Kong will keep me plenty busy in November.

Hopefully step 3 will be near-ifying StreetPass, so that you can use your own WiFi connection to find nearby users even when you haven't literally passed them.
I do wish the 3DS had better battery life in WiFi mode as well -- my Vita will live for a few days, but even with the lid closed, sitting in my closet, my 3DS will die in a few hours. Toggle activation on movement?
Holy crap, you guys. If you're looking forward to Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, and you haven't played Bowser's Inside Story, DO IT. It's so good. The first...45 minutes are a little slow, but it picks up fast after that.

Really? My old 3DS and now my XL are totally fine wi-fi on with the lid closed, probably last 2+ days. Hell, my XL lasted two days of playing too much animal crossing before I needed to charge it, and that was with the wifi on and playing it.

The delay of Mario Golf is pretty upsetting, but as long as they put in RPG mode, it'll be acceptable.
While this would be awesome, I'm going to keep my expectations low to avoid disappointment.
This is the biggest disappointment to me. When I traded away the PS3, the one game I was really sad to let go of was Hot Shots Golf but I said "It's ok, Mario Golf will be there for me"...and now it's not. Even the eShop offering are pretty crappy if you just want simple, gimmick free click-click-click style golfing.
This StreetPass change is amazing. Now it's like what the Vita's Near SHOULD have been since games already have StreetPass implemented and developers aren't ignoring the feature! StreetPass is easily one of my favourite things of this handheld generation and I'm glad to see they are still improving it.

Interesting change in Streetpass. Curious if it will work through the drivethru, since I'm never actually in a McD. Wonder if they are using all the unused Nintendo Zone access points. Those were a good idea that just didn't pan out.
When you guys are watching a video on the eShop, does it stop to buffer every 5-10 seconds? Videos are practically unwatchable for me, and apparently the 3DS doesn't buffer much because I can pause it and leave it sit and come back in 10 minutes and it will still do it. Not sure if it's my Wifi (likely) or just the 3DS.
edit: Got two Spot-Streetpasses this morning. LOVE that they are doing this. What's the downside to sending Miis to your Mii Plaza?
edit2: Wow. These guys on GameFAQs found a way to game the special Miis to get all the puzzle pieces they need using 2 3DS systems.
Courtesy of Dark Toshi..
The special mii, Iwata, is being distributed today through spotpass. As a special mii, he is golden and is at level 5. Moreover, he has every puzzle piece including the newest puzzle, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, for a total of 609 pieces. You're normally limited to only 1 piece from him (blue or pink). However, if you have a second 3DS, you can get additional pieces but at the cost of formatting the second 3DS repeatedly.
Start off by turning off the wifi of the first 3DS. Now format the second 3DS. By formatting the second 3DS, you can set up the unit (create a mii, have an available internet connection, etc) and then get Iwata again.
Be sure that you first have downloaded the spotpass puzzles or you won't be able to take any of the spotpass puzzle pieces from Iwata and instead be forced to pick a piece from the original 7 puzzles that are saved to system memory. Set SpotPass in the settings option in the mii plaza to yes as it is set to no by default.
To check if you've downloaded the spotpass puzzles, just go to your notifications. Look for a spotpass one entitled Puzzle Swap. If you see it, then you've downloaded all the spotpass puzzle data. It can take a few minutes or more depending on your internet connection. Once you've downloaded the data, you can go into Puzzle Swap and get the free spotpass puzzle starter piece. Then, you can pick any piece from Miyamoto.
Now turn on the wifi of the first 3DS. You will tag the second 3DS. Take the puzzle piece. Turn off the wifi of the first 3DS and reformat the second 3DS. Repeat the process all over again until you have all the pink pieces. I naturally assume that everyone would select pinks although you can choose blues if you wish. I managed to complete Luigi's puzzle this way so I have 609/609. I will be tagging these new pieces to my local GameStop to assist the users in the area.
tl:dr
You use the second 3DS to reformat over and over to reset the "received" bit so you can receive the special Mii over and over, and use the first 3DS to streetpass with the second to collect the puzzle piece before reformatting it.
There's so much awesome stuff lined up for 3DS... I'm about as excited for:
Mario & Luigi
Yoshi's Island
Zelda
Scribblenauts DC
Batman Blackgate
Smash Bros.
Mario Golf
as I am for the PS4 I preordered.
My Mario Golf excitement led to me just randomly buying Mario Tennis. I wish I had not done that... I haven't played Fire Emblem in a while as it is. Now I've got Tennis taking my attention! Shit gets real once you attain star rank. AI gets a little rubber-bandy, but in two of the star rank tourneys so far, I've had to face Mario in the semi-finals. They have been truly epic matches where it had to go to a tie-breaker that I barely won.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
Looks like it'll be cheaper to buy all my 3DS games from the UK and ship them halfway around the world than to buy them from a local store or the Nintendo E-Shop.

@pslong9 's post above details it, but it's going to work like Near when they update it. If you pass a WiFi hotspot, and later someone else passes the same hotspot, you StreetPass them. I think it's to mitigate the problem of North America not being so dense and rail transit oriented. We rarely get StreetPasses compared to Japanese players and Nintendo is listening!

That seems like it would take an incredible length of time if you had to reformat and reset the settings every single puzzle piece.
Not sure how I feel about the StreetPass change. On the one hand, it'll be nice to get them more often. On the other hand, knowing you walked by a 3DS brother is like a secret hi-5 feeling that I don't think pulling historical data off a wifi network will replicate.

But 99% of the time you have absolutely no idea who you walked by with a 3DS. I keep finding random people who have a ton of pink puzzle pieces and I *wish* I knew where the hell to find them again, but it's always some one-off thing
i downloaded oracle of ages and thought id probably never play it through it again and 1 day later im over half way through just got the cane of somalia. game is basically one dungeon after another after another with minimal fetching shit in between which is why its one of the best zelda games. i'm not sure if any dungeon tops LA's eagle tower but pretty close.
i forgot all about the seed shooter and how well it straddles the line between annoying/tedious and challenging. its like 'man can i bank this fucking shot already' and thats exactly when it does.
i don't remember how to do all the puzzles off the bat but really the whole series has formulaic themes so nothings real hard if you just take 30 seconds to look at the situation.
Anything I need to know before jumping in to Etrian Odyssey 4?
Have you played EO before? Because if not, make sure you learn to use the map making feature on the second screen and don't be afraid to take notes on there with the little red triangle icon. That's a freakin' life saver for solving some of the labyrinths. Especially if you're looking to 100% them with all the side quests and stuff. Also, unlike some JRPG's, inflicting status effects on monsters is your friend (well, it's certinaly my friend.)

I'd say by paying close heed to everything the NPCs and dialog boxes say, you can easily avoid the most common rookie mistakes. My very smart friend missed some crucial info, got some wrong impressions, and completely gave up after the first hour. He loved the game once we figured out what he was doing wrong. I don't have to spell these things out, the game does it for you if you're paying attention :P
You ever wonder exactly how many magic mushrooms the average japanese game studio design team consumes in a year?

Okay folks I got a question....should I get this system? I'm terrified of this going the way of my original DS and being fantastic on release but having no one to play with if I get in too late. With X & Y and Smash Bros coming...I'm finding it hard to resist. (I realize getting in NOW is considered quite late...)

Nahhhh, it's not quite late at all. The system is doing very well and has a bright future. You might be too late to play Resident Evil Revelations or Kid Icarus Uprising or Mario Kart 7 online, but I'm not sure, they may still have thriving communities.
In general it is a very good quality handheld with a lot of good games available for it. I bet you could find plenty of things to enjoy on it. And you'll be able to get in on the ground floor of Pokemon!
You may decide to wait and see if there's an awesome Pokemon XL system bundle or something.

That seems like it would take an incredible length of time if you had to reformat and reset the settings every single puzzle piece.
It's really good.
But 99% of the time you have absolutely no idea who you walked by with a 3DS. I keep finding random people who have a ton of pink puzzle pieces and I *wish* I knew where the hell to find them again, but it's always some one-off thing
i forgot all about the seed shooter and how well it straddles the line between annoying/tedious and challenging. its like 'man can i bank this fucking shot already' and thats exactly when it does.
i don't remember how to do all the puzzles off the bat but really the whole series has formulaic themes so nothings real hard if you just take 30 seconds to look at the situation.

Get it.
(Then get Fire Emblem.)
