The [80s Thread] - The Newest, Greatest Decade

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon has reinvigorated interest in the 80s like never before*! It was apparent to me in a recent tangent in the G&T Steam thread that there is a slew of 80s who need an outlet to discuss all awesome 80s things, like Robocop, Circus Fun cereal, and Metallica.

So come forth, sons and daughters of the 80s kids, and use this place as a haven for reliving your formative years and discussing those things which made this decade awesome.

    I smell a trap.

I'm surprised we don't need crystals implanted into the palm of our hand to post.

Fuck it: Top Gun is great, I don't care what Tom has done.

    Leonardo was the best TMNT

feels good to get that out.

I remember creating realistic battle damage in my toys with magnifying glasses and heated screwdrivers. So many GI Joes were disfigured...

I go between Leo and Donnie. However, what was nice is that their action figures were $3.00. Kids have to pay $11.99 for a figure nowadays. Ridiculous!

Well if you're talking the movie, it has to be Raphael or Leonardo; they're the two with a character arc. I'd probably go with Raphael based on him and Casey Jones. If you're talking the arcade game, Donatello all day erry day.

You are a creepy dude, bro.

    ...

I mean, all I ever did was rearrange heads and limbs on my toys. That's not weird...right?

Toys: I had a superman toy that punched when you squeezed his legs, and he had a cloth cape. Today, kids can count the pores on their Supermans nose.

And their kids will get to fly with superman in their VR holodeck a. Lucky, stupid, almost immortal kids.

    Best decade ever.

Many memories of coming home from daycare and me and dad watching the Transformers episode that he recorded for me earlier that day.

Speaking of, damn... Gotta love how the toys now actually look and can move just like their show/game counterparts instead of just being stiff plastic that vaguely resembles the character via color and decals.

Seeing that Stallone poster reminds me of Rambo.

You know, of all the Rambo movies, I think I watched Rambo III the most, constantly replaying it on my Betamax VCR player. Reading the wikipedia description now is hilarious:
As Rambo and Trautman try to make their way to Pakistan, Zaysen blocks them with a large mechanized force and orders them to surrender. However, Masoud's mujahideen forces attack the Soviets in a cavalry charge. In the ensuing battle, in which both Trautman and Rambo are wounded, Rambo manages to kill Zaysen by driving a tank into his helicopter. Rambo survives the explosion and gets out of the tank. At the end of the battle, Rambo and Trautman say goodbye to their mujahideen friends and leave Afghanistan to go home.

I don't think I ever saw the second Rambo in its entirety, didn't see the first Rambo until the mid-90s, and I've never seen the fourth one.

I was born in the 80's but I remember almost nothing about it.

But a lot of shit from the 80's was still on TV in the early 90's so I did consume a lot of 80's media. I tend to confuse the two decades.

I do love 80's movies though. The 80's had some of the best movies, but the worst music.

Wait no Michael Jackson was pretty big in the 80's. I meant fashion. The worst fashion.

Oh man remember that time vh1 did I love the 80s then I love the 80s part 2 & 3 and then the best of I Love the 80s?

Yeah, I'm kinda burnt out on nostalgia.

    But I'll contribute.

I loved the 80's, but the past decade of nostalgia has sure beaten a lot of it out of me.

Top Gun was awesome, and the opening still gives me goosebumps. Heh. No pun intended.

Michelangelo was my favorite at the time (Donatello of course for NES game) but I think over time I'm more of a Leonardo man.

Weird Al was great, and there are quite a few songs that my brain automatically replace the 'real' lyrics with his if I ever hear the original song.

Ghostbusters is a classic, but having watched the cartoon for years before ever seeing the movie was a bit jarring.

Rescue Rangers and Duck Tales will always have a place in my heart. And the theme songs will spend quite a bit of time in my head.

Also, The SImpsons and Married With Children - even though they carried on far longer, had their origin and some of their best years in the 80's.

Wait - yall spent the 80's watching TV? When there was gaming history to make? Check these pixels out:

That's some Indiana Jones action right there, straight outta '82.
    Dragons-Lair-iPhone-Screens-002.png
The arcade my grandpa used to take me to had a dozen of these things, each with an extra screen above so that people in the back could see, because the crowds got 5 deep.

1988 kicked ASS for gaming, not the least was the father of Fallout, and still the greatest CRPG ever made. And if you don't agree I will explode you like a blood sausage.

Of course, it's entirely possible that I'm still bitter that my parents never got cable, and I missed the MTV generation.

Fuck yes. Wasteland was great. It's also neat to see someone playing it who rolled new characters instead of using the original four.

Use the original four? Why would you even do that when you can hammer reroll for an hour or two and get super awesome stats?

As a child of the 80s, I of course remember it being completely radical. Even baddical. Sometimes I wish I could re-experience the wonder of that age again.

The Simpsons only had one season in the 80's. I'd hardly call that first season one of "their best years."

Zaxxon, Asteroids, Dragons Lair and Space Ace in the arcade.

Combat and Star Raiders on the Atari 2600.

The A-Team and Knight Rider on tv.

Also He-Man, Transformers, GI Joe, Thundercats, and a host of other cartoons.

Reading Neuromancer for the first time.

Playing Dungeons and Dragons, Car Wars, Champions, Traveler, Top Secret and GURPS.

Watching Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones, Star Wars sequels, Tron, The Black Hole (Shut up, I was 9 when I saw it in 1980,) Back to the Future, Blade Runner, Airplane!, The Terminator, Die Hard, The Princess Bride, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Right Stuff... Man, I could go on and on...

Music.. Huey Lewis and the News, the Ghostbusters soundtrack (the first cassette I ever owned on my own!), New Wave... all of it. I really loved music in the 80's. It was starting to get corporate, and had access to all the corporate financial resources, but still had a modicum of creativity.

    I love the 80's.

I think the reason we can get so weepy-eyed nostalgic for the '80s at all, is that technology took such a giant leap over the next two decades, empowering us to sort through the mountains of chaff generated by those years of excess. There was a LOT of really painfully bad music in the '80s, along with some awful movies and probably on the whole the single worst decade of television programming the human race has ever been subjected to.

Everything was big and ugly and analog and shitty, and was covered in fake wood-grain and a dust of dried aquanet that future archaeologists will have to gently scrape and brush away when they unearth the artifacts of this bygone era.

I played the hell out of King's Quest on various computers as a kid. One of them was a at a place at this local mall that was some sort of science center and they had PC Jrs and various games on diskettes, including a few Sierra adventure games.

    IBM_PCjr_System_1.jpg

My elementary school also had that same type of computer. First learned Logo on that thing.
