    MANIA GIVEAWAY CONTEST!

    trackmania2-canyon-logo.png

As a resident huge fan of the series, I've got a lot to say about why I love this series from Nadeo. Although I've found my internet connection speed wanting in Shootmania, that issue will fade into the ether once the NBN rolls out (as long as it's hobbled by the Libs).

Anyway! What's to love about Trackmania? It's the perfect game for spousal or children interruption. I, like you, would sigh a little sigh when your significant other would come into the study/games room and start a one-way conversation about something or other. I don't really mind, and it's likely to be more important than gaming, but come on I was in the middle of something that requires intense concentration to pull off and now the flow is gone (is what my eyes say but my mouth stays firmly shut).

With Trackmania you don't even have to pause the game. You just turn away and give your full, beaming attention to your chosen love one and actively engage with them. As it turns out they freaking love it when you do this, who knew!? The multiplayer game will go on without your intervention or input for a good 10-15 minutes (after which you're probably going to be kicked to the lobby, fair enough) and because there are countless tracks, you'll probably never get a chance to race each one again anyway. I've put in over a dozen hours online and I'm yet to repeat a single track, so it's no big deal if you miss a few.

It's also a great addition to a weekend morning routine. Wake up, shower, shave, toast, coffee, Trackmania Canyon for 3 or 4 races, start the day. Bloody lovely.

The controls are predictable and super-tight, the racing frantic and exhilarating when you edge into the top 8 of a room of 50 racers, the sense of speed is phenomenal... This game has probably broken all other arcade racers for me, I haven't played any other since.

OK so that was longer than I expected. Where's the giveaway, TeeMan!?

I want to hear the best suggestion of a future "Mania" game. Their outstanding community toolsets and creativity can't just be limited to arcade racing and 90's-inspired FPS. Give me a snappy title and a run down of community features that'll make me fly to France, track down their headquarters and make me scream "Excusez-moi monsieur, J'ai une idée de jeu!!" and be suitably stunned at my perfect pronunciation and accent.

Please submit all entries through PM and a winner will be chosen in a few days to be suitably rewarded.

Yay, thanks! That one seemed pretty epic when I was checking it out. I look forward to giving it a whirl!

Just, you know, not tonight. Because sleep is a thing that I must indulge in. So that I can go to work in the morning. So that I can make money. So that I can give that money to the Newell. My life, it has meaning.

So, while performing a kidney transplant tonight in Surgeon Simulator 2013, I learned a few things I thought important to share with you fine people.

    1. Kidney transplants, they are not as easy as you'd no doubt imagine. Who'd've thunk?

    2. Laser cutters are fantastic multi-purpose tools. Also, surgeons are immune to lasers. Luckily.

    3. Pencils are not considered surgical tools. They do no bleeding damage whatsoever. They are, therefore, completely safe to use to poke and prod and pry the kidneys out of position for easy removal - with no risk of injuring the patient. I consider this a top-notch piece of useful information that will no doubt be of incalculable value throughout my life. Always keep a pencil handy in case of emergency operating situation.

This concludes your medical lesson of the day. Carry on.

Looks like we're going to start seeing the Greenlit mods showing up soon. Cry of Fear guys have posted that their release date is the 24th. http://www.cry-of-fear.com/

Interestingly the game is now standalone, no longer requiring Half Life 1. Still free though. Heard a lot of good things about this mod, just released recently, may have to give it a spin.

The only thing I can suggest similar to the FF series is The Last Remnant. While it has much of the feel of a FF game, the combat is squad based, so it can be challenging. There is a demo available, so you may want to check it out.

Only that TLR is cleary superior to FF in every aspect except for the story! Also: I hated the demo of TLR but later, when I got the game for 3€, I loved it enough to play it around 100 hours, so play the demo at your own risk. It just throws you into the game with no explanation whatsoever and you'll probably be overhelmed for the entire length of it.

    Also, Aquaria is decently metroidvania-ish.

Batman Arkham Asylum is also surprisingly Metroid at its core, even if more Metroid Prime than Super Metroid.

Also also, the Trine games are not exactly it, but may scratch the itch a little.

The contributor value is determined by the non-sale steam store item price.

That's why when something goes to 80 or 90% off you'll see Steamgifts explode.

There are exceptions/variations to this rule, but they're kind of irritating to understand so I just try not to think about it.

    It's time...

Time for the We Don't Need That Organ Anyway Contest!

    SS2013.jpg

The year 2013 is a year with some great game releases. Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider... and this gem. Surgeon Simulator 2013. Watch for this to sweep GOTY awards. Sure, Bioshock Infinite bent your mind, and Tomb Raider was sublime, but this, folks... this is the game we'll still be talking about in December.

And here's your chance to own a copy all your very own.

Smash ribs! Yank organs! Bobble livers! Make intestines dance! Do all the fun things surgeons do behind closed doors while you sleep!

A game so realistic, so nerve-wrattling, that there's even an achievement for successfully managing to answer the phone. Can you imagine?

The pulse-pounding excitement as you desperately try to stave off a 78ml/sec blood loss on your patient after inelegantly stabbing yourself with a hallucinogen is only matched by the thrill of electrocuting yourself by sticking a scalpel into an electrical outlet and dropping a donor heart on the floor.

Don't miss this chance. You will regret it.

"How?" you ask. "How can I win this treasure?" Oh, glad you asked. Do a haiku or a limerick. (edit: or find/steal one. Does not have to be original.) PM it to me. Best one wins. Best probably means funniest. Conditions: the haiku/limerick must involve one or more body parts in some fashion. Crude is acceptable - there are no lines here.

Contest will end at some random time Friday evening and prize will be awarded then.

Good luck! And may all your internal organs stay where they belong.

Oh. And don't forget to carry a pencil with you always.

It does, which is why Steam Gifts FLOODS with pay-what-you-want games. You'll see the same person giving away 10 copies of games they paid a penny for, for the sole purpose of driving up their contributor amount so they can enter the more exclusive giveaways. Don't think for a second that the people in the high roller giveaways have spent anywhere near several thousands of dollars on goodwill.

And it's not "jumping puzzle" hard, either. You have to figure out the puzzles in this Temple to open more of it up and they are brutally difficult to figure out. It doesn't help that when you solve something, half the time all you get is a sound cue and you have no idea what you just accomplished.

It's one of my favourite games ever and I don't like platformers as a rule.

these are great times we live in, yesterday I was playing Tomb Raider 2 with my daughter sat on my knee and was called away by my wife for a minute so I saved my game and gave the controller to my daughter so she could jump around or go swimming or whatever. When I got back she looks at me all puzzled and asks me to get the game working again so I go to load up the save and she has deleted my save game 19 hours in! that would probably have crushed me if I'd been playing it on PS1 but it took me about 30 seconds to find a save game file pretty much exactly where I was

I saw the gift war on here just before I went to bed and that also made me smile, great work guys!
