someone told me that Supes not being played by an American is equivalent to Bond not being played by someone from the UK
so I said:
1. George Lazenby was Australian, so
2. Henry Cavill looks like Superman
EDIT: Holy shit and he looks like James Bond too which is just a sidenote, but, really though
though I'd rather the role of Bond go to Idris Elba or Emily Blunt before someone who just looks like any super-handsome white guy, because how awesome would it be after the Craig Bonds they just kept evolving
but mostly I like linking that for "Scholar at your boy"
I love David Brothers, but I've gotta say my desire for some Idris Elba being rad as Bond doesn't probably doesn't stem from some brand of tokenism. I like James Bond because there are corny one-liners and car chases, and sometimes a large animal will eat someone. I don't like James Bond because I like seeing a specifically white guy do those things. The things Bond does are not restricted to white people, his skin color is irrelevant to the plot, and maybe that's because he's had to be someone with privilege to do what he does for a long time, but it's not some integral aspect of his character. It- like so much of western media- is influenced by the institutions of its time. Regardless of whether those institutions were immoral and monstrous(they really, really were), they'd no longer affect the story in any meaningful way. Brothers is saying that Bond is an exclusively white character and that by having Elba as bond it would be presenting the idea that equal representation is only okay on White People's terms. I agree with Brothers that there should be more nonwhite-male Bond-type original characters, but there's no reason that Elba as Bond has to perpetuate any institution other than "James Bond is awesome". Plus Idris Elba was made by god to take this role and it would be a LITERAL CRIME to not hire him.
Having a person of color as Bond doesn't value the white experience over any other, because the actor playing him isn't white anymore. I see this a lot more akin to writing the characters in Alien so they could be played by either men or women. So, since moving past unrepresentative cultural institutions is the right thing to do, and it's built into the franchise for Bond to change actors, AND the institutions that kept bond from changing have lost power and only deserve recognition so they won't be repeated, why the hell not do this? Obviously hiring him would turn a lot of heads, and people would write in and petition and shit, but those people are racist assholes, who cares what they think? Bond is on its surface a franchise about car fights and ninja chases, and the modern films are totally sidestepping any gung-ho imperialism the franchise had left. Basically we disagree on whether the cultural biases that existed at the inception of this work still permeate it past the point of it being of any use in modern times, and I say no- but I am a white male in the west and I've got that clouding my vision, so maybe I don't comprehend how fucked everything is.
god damn this post is all over the place, I gotta go to bed and then read The Elements of Style
sorry I'm so inarticulate right now, folks
EDIT: oh god and now it's at the top of the page can't you do anything right, dimosar
There are potentially Iron Man 3 spoilers out in the wild, so beware.
I think I may have been spoiled, but the things that I was told are so ridiculous I can't believe that's what actually happens, but I don't want to try and google it to confirm.
the best part about not caring about spoilers is not actively going into paranoia mode any time something is being released, which is usually always. it's really freeing.
Tony is in space (let's say he prepped the trip before the end of the movie) and all of the sudden a gun is pointed to his head. Pan across and it's Peter Quill with maybe the entire GotG with him. Fade to black.
Hey I don't care about spoilers. Someone spoil everything for me.
the current global society is one that thrives on exploitation and misery, nothing you do will ever be of significance, and hundreds of varieties of horrible doom could strike our blissfully unaware world at any time
Nope! Ha! Got ya, I had my finger still on the page where I selected the choice which landed me here.
Ain't fallin' for this old ruse again

yeah, I don't see it as a superiority thing.
Spoilers don't really bother me either, except in rare cases where the story hangs on a massive twist, like Usual Suspects or more recently Cabin In The Woods. In those cases I've found people have made a big enough deal out of how important it is to not be spoiled that I've been extra cautious, but for most things I don't worry too much.

fuck that fucking study
if i'm looking for spoilers before i consume some media i'll seek it out
but people get so indignant about the idea "hey, i might want to find out how this goes for myself"

I totally get that some people don't want spoilers, and I always try my best to respect that
but that study isn't saying that you can't prefer to be unspoiled, just that of the subjects tested, spoiled folks tended to enjoy media more. Their experience isn't less valid than yours, just different.

maybe you will enjoy it more when you know the plot, who knows. It don't matter, you can only get to enjoy the surprise element of a movie once going in 'spoiled' is for every other viewing forever.

Spoilers are just the freaking worst. And my friends are just the worst at spoiling things.
Watching Lonesome Dove for the first time.
Roommate walks in as I start an episode and says, "Oh man this is the episode where Jake Spoon dies!"
Other roommate says preceding each character death, "Oh man this is about to get to sad, I can't watch so and so die!"
And hell, lunch a couple days ago, I mention I still haven't seen Skyfall
"Dude when Judi Dench dies?"
And like a million other things. Every time I go into a near murderous rage. Pretty sure Im going to read Game of Thrones soon just to spoil things for them moments before they happen.
I will have vengence.

game of thrones sucks you'll be doing them a favor
The experiment itself was simple: Nicholas Christenfeld and Jonathan Leavitt of UC San Diego gave several dozen undergraduates 12 different short stories.
it has basically no applicability. it's like asking a hundred people if they like apples, and if more than 50% answer that they do, concluding "apples are the best fruit!"
the one purpose that study does serve is getting trotted out to back up people who... don't care about getting spoiled on things
I really dislike the idea that there is some time limit on spoilers, cos I actually haven't gotten round to watching every movie ever made even if it's over 10 years old

short version: Everybody watch Luther
and also very much enjoy seeing racist assholes get upset about things. Elba as Heimdall was great for this! Also great in general!
and on those counts I'd be totally okay with Elba as Bond. Heck, I don't have anything against the idea because he would indeed be amazing at it.
I'd just rather see them build a new iconic character around him, rather than fit him into an existing, historically white character.
I think I may have been spoiled, but the things that I was told are so ridiculous I can't believe that's what actually happens, but I don't want to try and google it to confirm.
If they insist on using him I prefer he appear off in his own thing instead of in books I like.
the superior title makes me think this is going to be a Thing though

Sounds good?
why not make that guy
jonah hex
Is he just regular Jonah Hex with a fishbowl helmet still riding a horse but in outer space?
He hears a rumbling vibration, shortly before being knocked off course by something crashing into him
Both objects get jerked off camera by what looks like...a motorcycle?
Once the camera catches up, Tony is still dazed, and Lobo looks at the camera while smoking a cigar(????) and says
"Hell, it's about time"
whoa I didn't say anything about a fishbowl helmet
whoooooooooooooa
I just kind of stared at the post box for a while trying to come up with an adequate representation of how happy I am
it's hard
"do you know how fast you were going"
Well I guess since I've never said, this, i'm not?
Pardon me for commenting on something that pertains to how I enjoy media.
the current global society is one that thrives on exploitation and misery, nothing you do will ever be of significance, and hundreds of varieties of horrible doom could strike our blissfully unaware world at any time
It's raping your wallet hard
Sigh and I might buy one of them

There's even been one study that found people actually tend to enjoy things more when spoiled:
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/08/spoilers-dont-spoil-anything/
if i'm looking for spoilers before i consume some media i'll seek it out

i don't think you can really call cabin in the woods a twist since it's a plot element that's revealed pretty much immediately
misleading marketing, sure
twist, nah
Twist may not be the best word to describe it
but people were saying "the less you know about the plot going in the more you'll enjoy the movie"
and they were right, I was glad to have not been spoiled in that case.

Man it's super fucking great then that I nor anyone else on this page has said that, or even that study!
