Rethinking PS2 Purchase

jhunter46jhunter46 Registered User regular
edited March 2007 in Games and Technology
I picked up a used PS2 the other day from Game Stop. I'm starting to think that I should have just picked up a 360 instead.

I have until Thursday to take it back and get a 360. If I got one, Core or Pro? I don't really care about cords, but is the hard drive such a big deal?

Also, is it 802.11 out of the box?

Does DVD playback require remote?

I need answers :-P

Get the pro but honestly the PS2 has a ton of titles at a good value. Most of the 360's 59.99 game releases keep my library slow to build.

Wireless is $100 extra, DVD playback is available from the get-go. I cannot possibly understand the logic of buying an Xbox 360 over a PS2, though. Playstation 2 has the best software line-up since the Super Nintendo.

Unless you really really want online games.

[edit] Hard drive is practically essential.

If you havn't gotten a chance to play either library. Go PS2, you will have years upon years of AAA titles. Most of them for under 20 dollars. I love the 360, but unless you want to play online, you will get so much more value out of the PS2 for now.

the new ps2 is so cheap now i wouldnt buy a used one myself. 360 is the best console i've bought in a long time. go pro and get it online if you have broadband.

my other advice is to buy one from amazon. my first one was eating my discs and they took it back no problem. hell, they even apologized for my inconvience. shipping didnt cost me anything. great company imo.

Any reason why your droping the PS2? It has a lot more titles than the 360, comes with less defects and has a fairly wide genre library than the 360.

As for the 360, YES the hard drive is THAT big of a deal.

    1. You want to save games regardless, if you don't have a harddrive you have you buy a $40, 64mb memory card. That's almost half the price of a harddrive and a small fraction of the space.

Yeah, i'd also recommend sticking with your original decision. I have a Wii, 360, DS, PSP and pretty high end pc yet my ps2 still easily gets twice as much playtime as all the others combined even though i've had it since launch

I'm personally holding out on the 360 until the Elite comes out, and only for Mass Effect at this stage.

I just ordered a PS2. Have a Wii, just sold my Xbox.

I plan to buy both eventually myself, but the PS2 is coming first, simply because it's cheaper, and has some good games that I did miss. I don't ever plan on buying more than 15 games or so for it, but right now.....so much more value than a 360, unless you absolutely must have Xbox Live.

Premium definitely. Core is called the "tard pack" for a reason.

Wifi out of the box? No.

DVDs can be controlled with a 360 controller, but a remote is better.

As for 360 vs. PS2, it really depends what kind of gamer you are. If you don't mind playing dozens of games from the last 5 years or so, the PS2 is obviously the better choice. If you want the best list of upcoming exclusives on any system (arguably...in my opinion) and a handful of great exclusives to pick up now, as well as Live + Live Arcade, get the 360. Basically, 360 is the PS2 of the future.

Would your rather have a huge selection of many of the best examples of many different types of games in the previous generation or invest in the future? Have a huge backlog or buy things as they come out?

    That should decide it.

    Pretty much.

By now, the PS2 has examples of good games, no matter what you like. Stick with it, unless you've got money burning a hole in your pocket.

Huge selection in theory. Availability and cash to buy games with is a factor. So while you can get 2 great PS2 games for the price of one great 360 game the answer to this thread, like all others of its kind is, what games do you want to be playing right now and get the console that plays them.

I have more PS2 games than I have ever had for any other system. It has variety, quality, and quantity. The 360 is pricey, and has some quality games, and not so much variety.

Man, for the price of a 360 by itself, you can get a PS2, a memory card, and a dozen Greatest Hits games. Then take the $60 you would have spent on Gears Of War and buy a lot of Foster's beer.

on the flip side of that coin I get a lot more replay out my 360 games. Gears multi hasnt gotten old yet and even three months after purchase I'm still co-oping with pals. just for one example. i wouldnt buy old tech myself but to each his own. split the difference and buy a Wii?

I don't have either, but isn't the answer something like the following?

If you TV is HD then consider the 360, but still the PS2 has a shitton of games, if it is SD then your answer is the PS2.

yar not a lot to it without multi. or a lot of games on the 360. Battlestations: Midway without multi would be dumb for example.

The PS2 is the king of budget gaming. For $20 each you can buy Shadow of the Colossus, Devil May Cry 3, God of War and Resident Evil 4. And then buy used copies of Max Payne 1 and 2 for a combined $10.

I've always ridden behind the curve, so buying a PS2 now is easily one of the best decisions a person could make. But regardless of if you go PS2 or 360, you can play Guitar Hero, so you win either way. :)

The reason I haven't bought a PS2 is because it has too many awesome games. I simply can't afford to play everything I want to on that system, so I am staying far away from it. I have a mortgage dammit! That's why I love my Wii. One or two AAA games every couple of months is perfect for a guy like myself with limited time and funds.

You already bought the PS2, so stick with it.

Also, for great fun try out the Beatmania game with the funky keyboard/turntable controller. That shit is fun if you're into rythm games, and you look a lot less silly than you do playing DDR.

Wait, what? I mean, you said, huh? That don't make no sense.

Okay, you're on a budget, but the PS2 system is cheap, and the games are cheap. You don't have to buy ALL the good games. You can just buy some of them.

I own both systems, and can personally vouch for both, but I'd lean towards the PS2 if you haven't owned one before. The 360 is only beginning to amass a large library, and most games are still expensive, with price drops few and far between. Meanwhile the PS2 is just dripping with reasonably-priced awesome content.

You can't go wrong either way, but if money is an issue I'd stick with the PS2. By the time you go through the library, the 360 will probably have a far more attractive game library (in terms of price *and* volume)

Right now I own 40 PS2 games, only 2 of them that I think are rubbish. By the time I've bought every PS2 game I want, I should have around about 70.

I think that says enough about how awesome the PS2 library is.

For what it's worth, I bought a 360 a year ago (only had a gamecube from last gen), and honestly I wish I'd have gotten a ps2 instead and waited on the 360.

I think the 360 will turn out to have been a terrific investment a year from now, but the price can only go down (or the features only get better if the redesign rumors are true) so why not get the PS2 now and 360 later?

Also, if you get a 360 now and become accustomed to fancy shmancy graphics, it might make it harder to accept ps2 level graphics if you later decided to pick up a ps2 in a year or so.
