Has anyone figured out how to unlock the bottom 2 quests in each Avalon Pact (Innocence, Desire, etc). Mine are blacked out and there are arrows pointing at things I don't understand. I assume it has something to do with Saving instead of sacrificing?

Some of them only unlock as you progress through the story or complete other Avalon quests .

Looks like I missed an invite from some of you guys last night by just a couple of minutes. Hopefully we can remedy that pretty soon.

Yeah I invited you to play with us a couple times last night.

Really? Only the first one seemed to pop up.

Admittedly, I've been doing a lot of "pick up and play for five minutes" so its totally possible that I missed it. I'll keep an eye out, or just PM me on here any time.

PSN/livearea messages are manual refresh unless you change the options. Push default is not on I presume to save WIFI/3g. I only figured out to turn on auto check during last night.

Slowly making my way through the story mode a few chapters at a time.

I feel like the game sort of assumes you'll spend time grinding different chapters and Avalon pacts at certain points, it really felt like I hit a couple points where my damage just wasn't up to par and it took too long to kill an archfiend. Farming up some SE+ and getting better sigils helped a ton.

It would probably be a lot worse if I wasn't almost totally Dark spec, I can't even imagine trying to level Divine your first time through.

The difficulty in this game really comes from fighting some of the bigger monsters in 4 person groups online. They have so much HP and tend to be much more vicious, can really come down to the wire. Really great.

I've been having a good time entirely solo. I don't feel like increasing the bosses' hp tenfold would really enhance the experience all that much.

So the soul and life shards you pick up from the enviroment, apply a permanent bonus to your character? I thought they were just temporary buffs... Anyone know what the revry stat is for?

I have no idea what the shards are for. I know there's a couple sigils that use them, but not many.

They hit harder and are more aggressive, too. Also, playing with other humans is fun. The game is extremely easy by yourself. I understand some people are not very social though.

I still need to do some multi play, I'm in the final section of single player story now.

Finally starting to see higher rank offerings as rewards, too.

Definitely need to do some farming for more + and ++ SE and LE though.

I really like how, at least early on, not sure about later, there's quite a few different places you can go rather than continue the main story. I just messed around with the game all day grinding previous quests and then went into The Wicked Sorcerer for the hell of it.

    Wicked Sorcerer spoilers, obv:
The only thing that really gave me trouble was the Avaricious Slime fight. I guess they have no weaknesses? I threw everything at it but Poison and I really doubt Gold is going to be weak against Poison. Still, the first time I beat it, I did so by sacrificing Carnatux because I didn't really like him and I wasn't thinking about it. Then in the cutscene, I started thinking "Oh....his story wasn't done. Hrm. Wonder how that's going to play out." Had a kick out of the game saying "Hey, uh, so....that wasn't supposed to happen. Good thing you have stuff that lets you change history as it's written!" and then I tried it again, saving him whenever he dropped. Ended up getting Level 2 Health out of it because of that and I saved a rat for a quick health boost. I have been sacrificing everything else.

I do like that they let me do that, though, since I got some essence out of it and the like.

It's just so hard to put this game down when you really get into it.

There are a few archfiends with no elemental weakness

Off the top of my head,
Slime, Wyvern, and Cyclops have no weakness. Makes them kind of annoying to fight, especially since it's so insanely difficult to inflict a status effect on them even if you're using the status effect boost and a tri root.

There's a couple monsters that have no element weaknesses, yes.

Though they still have corrupted bits you can hack off.

Now, the minotaur, I have no idea what that fucking guy's deal is.
He has an elemental weakness, but he heals or is invincible until you blow up his hammer or something?

I'm not entirely sure. I got him, but I'm hopeful there was a faster way of doing it.

Makes sense. At least you can still get the "Vulnerability" bonus from the little things that spawn during those fights to help you restore health or offerings. It's not "Archfiend Vulnerability" but still. Points!

It's fairly easy to get the Counter, and three Counters bonus in every archfiend fight as well.

I haven't really been paying too much attention to ranks and scores just yet. I like to get what I can get, but I'm not really shooting for the stars. I -have- gotten some good scores and ranks here and there, though.

Has anyone figured out the point thresholds for the titles and what bonuses you get for them yet?

It depends. Stuff like battles with sorcerers or the ones where you just gather stuff have a really low threshhold. You're also given a bit more time leeway during 2 on 1 fights.

Also sometimes I get the best item just from getting legendary, but sometimes I don't?

Oh my god, you can poke Librom to knock him over and piss him off. (Also poke him with the rear touch screen to knock him forward, and also spin him around by flicking one side to the other.)

Man, I'm totally glad someone mentioned pre-order bonuses, since I had no idea there *were* any. Went to look at my GS receipt, and there was the code. Almost threw it out.

Yeah but again, it's pretty much a garbage spell.

I guess people want it because you can't get it any other way, but it's not really worth using because you can get better offerings fairly early on and easily.

I used the Volt offering preorder bonus for a while!

Re: points: The threshold for Divine is 400 on a lot of fights. It's a moving target though, some fights it is low.

I'm using the preorder bonus spells since they're much higher damage even if the casts is lower, which isn't a problem if you cycle them and sacrifice stuff.

Right now my thoughts on the games are: It really reminds me of a game called Phantom Dust that was on OXBOX, both in the gameplay and the bleakness of the setting.

The most compelling thing right now for the game is probably the story, though I think I generally prefer the grind in Monster Hunter for whatever reason. Probably because I actually get new weapons and armors, whereas in SS, it seems like most of the spells I get are just elemental variations of spells I already have.

Oh, I think I realized another thing that makes the gameplay in MH more compelling. SS has basically designed each mission to be a fairly short arena to fit with portable gameplay, which is great for that purpose. However, when playing MH, the monsters feel more "alive" in a sense. They get tired and hungry, they get angry, they try to run away from you, they attack each other, they summon smaller versions of their species, etc. Which works when you're spending 15-30 minutes on average per quest. You get all the unique flavor just from fighting them. Whereas in SS, all that cool stuff is basically in the bunch of Lore text you get from reading, and I think the game loses a lot of the flavor if you just play the game and don't spend the time reading. Basically the game and the world seem more distinct. Whereas in MH, I tend to just skip most of the text, and that's okay.

SS and MH really aren't similar games.

I mean on the very topmost layer, you're fighting a giant monster with up to four people and you can break parts.

But when you get down to virtually every other aspect of the game, including the gameplay design beyond the most cursory glance, they're just very different games.

Something about this game reminds me of Dragon Quest more than anything else.

What with every little story being soul-crushingly depressing, but amazing at the same time. I think its those little side Sorcerer stories that really make it.

re: Pre Order Items - I like em. Not excessively powerful. Just a handy boost in the early-mid levels. Only gets a few casts with no method to upgrade. Seems pretty well balanced to me.

Yeah, I love MH and I love this game, but the two aren't similar in any way other than that they share a vague theme or genre. Both are just very different games trying to accomplish different things.

I've been using the "bomb" spells, the ones that you place on the ground and are triggered by movement or spells. They're very, very good for boss fights... lay them down while the boss is still "spawning" and then as soon as it's up, hit them with a spell and you'll do a huge chunk of damage and probably blow off a cursed part. Then you can repeat this anytime you get a stun or elemental "hell" off on them. those and the mortar spells are really good.

  • SightTDWSightTDW Registered User regular
I think MH is becoming a "genre" in the same sense that DOTA is one. Some kind of loose sub sub sub genre of Action RPG that's all sorta comparable. I just call it Boss Fight: The Game.

I usually click start the moment the monsters spawn cutscene starts, then summon a golem of appropriate element and them wail on them with tri root of the same element. Can force most bosses into a hell with it in soloplay so far, but I'm only up to 3-4 star missions.

Gotta try the bombs though, would be nice for the bosstypes who like to move around.

the area effect elemental spells are really good for large bosses - they'll always be in the area of effect and it forces elemental hells extremely quickly. very easy to stunlock them like that.

of course, most bosses aren't huge and slow, save for a few notables.

I'm a little confused about how elemental effects work. I was fighting Cerberus last night, and I was able to freeze individual cursed parts, but not actually freeze him. I don't know what benefit there is to partial freezing.

It appears to just be an indicator as to how far along you are toward totally freezing him.

Side note, partially freezing Wyvern is really great because when he splits into multiple shadows only the "real" one will have the ice chunks on him.
