Pfft. Fuck Texas. Let "small government" conservatism handle this shit. I'm sick of assholes like them and in my own state of TN whining and trying to block help for other states, but when something happens at home "Oh no! We need big daddy to come save us!" Actually, it's more like "Come save us NOW you useless fuck that we make useless by our actions!" So no, no help for them, fuck them.

Well you're a no good cunt, aren't you?

you'd think withholding federal aid would be a good way to get that person not reelected though

Let's not. It probably won't work out that way and well only hurt those suffering right now.

Man, can't you all just want to help people because they need it? Their shitty attitude shouldn't be what decides if they get aide or not. And who knows, maybe getting help will change their attitude and they will realize what a shit heel Rick Perry is for lying out his ass all day, every day.

In the short term, supplies and temporary housing I imagine. And in the longer term, it will be rebuilding money. Really the same kind of thing you would expect if a tornado hit a town.

Just so you guys know, the OP from the D&D thread on this has some links to charitable organizations that are providing relief to the victims:

Just in case anybody is interested in helping out.

Nope, but people need to realize that shit like this doesn't happen in a vacuum. Their attitudes about helping others and safety have come back to bite them in the ass. Fuck them for trying to demand something from us that they denied to others.

Hell no it doesn't, because "being the better person" doesn't do shit except make idiots think they've accomplished something. I'm sick of "being the better person." All it's done is marginalized the very people who have the best interests of the country at heart, while those slimey bastards who play dirty run every god damned thing.

It didn't dawn on me right away that West was home to Czech Stop, but as soon as I figured it out I had to make sure it was okay. Required stop any time we travel down to Waco or beyond, as well as the return trip to Dallas.

I don't doubt it, biting the hand that once fed you is not new behavior, especially in politics. But, helping its citizens in a time of crisis is one of those things a government should do, so.

Yeah, I guess you're right. It just pisses me off. They're directly responsible for this because of their lax regulations and zoning laws. Who the fuck builds a fertilizer plant in the middle of town!?

You know, I don't agree with many of Rick Perry's decisions, but I also don't agree that a bunch of poor bastards should be punished for some jackass railing against the federal government.

And if you really think Texas is that bad, look up what they've contributed to in past disasters. I don't think these situations are appropriate for political beef. With victims of a disasters such as this, I hope relief gets to them. Whether that be state, federal, charity or all three. In any part of the US. And it'd be nice to see that take place everywhere, but I think writing the people in a state off and a blanket "fuck them" is pretty goddamn callous and immature.

Good thing he didn't get reelected then, eh?

So not getting reelected and retiring are the same thing, I guess.

EDIT - And the guy that replaced him voted against VAWA and Disaster Relief.

Personally, I'm just amazed that someone that supports increased oil drilling would get elected. In Texas.

Yeah, I guess you're right. It just pisses me off. They're directly responsible for this because of their lax regulations and zoning laws. Who the fuck builds a fertilizer plant in the middle of town!?

Unless you have conclusive evidence that:

-the plant was built after the town (and not the other way around)
-that there was no local comp plan (or one that was implemented before the plant's building which was modified or allowed for it to be built - as any zoning implemented cannot usually stop operation of an active facility without becoming a regulatory taking requiring compensation (which a town of this size probably doesn't have money or economic incentive to grant))
-that the locals are overwhelmingly in favor of the political spectrum you seem to be projecting on them
-that those injured by the blast were, in fact, of that spectrum
-that the plant itself was responsible for the explosion with day to day activities rather than a freak accident
-that there is some evidence that those supported by FEMA post-reconstruction are "greedy" in some fashion

I would kindly ask you to stop talking. You are projecting a lot of hate upon people who were living their own lives, kindly and quietly, and had them brutally destroyed. The role of government is to provide for the public health, safety and welfare. You are implying that, because of some obnoxious politicians, an entire state of twenty six million people should have no right to assistance. This is not only wrong, but petty and venturing pretty close to evil.

Yeah, Texas is extremely loose with zoning in general. Even if they weren't, if the plant predated the Comp Plan it would typically be grandfathered until such a time as the plant changes hands or is condemned and purchased with eminent domain. One of the good news things with the present situation is that now would be a perfect time to push for land use reform in Texas which is sorely needed. Maybe not to the Hawaii/Oregon/Florida levels, but as Texas is about 50 years behind the curve they will need to catch up fast in order for any differences to be made (typically a Comp Plan only starts having real effect on a town after 25 years).

Real issue is, with a town this size, that industrial use probably has a larger share of local employment than typically is of concern with this sort of case. Closing or relocating the plant wouldn't only cost money for the taking compensation (which the town probably doesn't have), but would likely also greatly wound their tax income via the plant going wherever is cheapest and not regulated along with the losses to local employment.

Planning isn't some magic wand that fixes towns like in Sim City. You can't easily just make a utopian city/village by passing local ordinances, especially when on increasingly limited property tax and business incomes. It's an incredibly complicated and subtle field.

Land use plans are definitely bonkers to create. It takes years and years, even in what might be considered relatively small municipalities. I do not think it is a thing I would want to try doing.
