I just want that engine to die. I mean, yesterday I got the new Borderlands game. Does it look as spiffy as Wolfenstein out of the box? Nope. But I can downscale the living shit out of it, edit the ini to remove all texture streaming and supersize the LOD on assets/shadows AND run Sweetfx with extra shaders on top of it to make it look absolutely pristine. All at a glorious 60 fps, without gutting PhysX.

By the time PCs exist that can do that with Tech 5, it'll have been thrown away for another engine.
Okay but the Unreal engine (Borderlands) is pretty dated, and while decent even today - it's getting rather ugly compared to anything else coming out. id tech 5 is actually pretty good, if it is used correctly, but we haven't seen many games on it because it's Bethesda's in-house engine. Plus the industry just likes to have a common standard like Unreal. Borderlands isn't really anything to write home about in the graphics department - so it's not of any great praise that you can downsample it or third party tweak it without much cost.

There are only three games that use id tech 5 - Rage, Wolfenstein: The New Order and The Evil Within. Rage wasn't very good, even as a game - and didn't make full use of the engine, which is understandable because it was basically a new team using a new engine for the first time. Wolfenstein was pretty great, they made decent use of the engine, but it was held back a little by console parity in my opinion. The Evil Within is less to do with the engine, and just horrible optimization - and again it was a new time using a newish engine, on new systems for the first time.

Even Rockstar has come out in saying that they don't want to release on new systems, or new engines right away because it requires a lot of experience and trailblazing.

Yeah i went to bed mostly through that chapter last night.
I was trying different ways to kill chainsaw guy. hes unfortunately a massive sponge. I usually start the fight by lobbing a grenade over the wall, then try and lure him to where a bomb trap is on his left, then shoot him with an agony spear, but hes still kicking after all that. Also tried luring him over to the shooty spear trap and hit him with that but he just shrugged it off and kept on coming. I guess im going to have to just waste a bunch of ammo on him. Was hoping to get creative and save it.
Also...sebastion...how the hell did you pass the cop physical.. You run more then 3 seconds at a time and you have to stop and hold your side for twice as long? LAY OFF THE DOUGHNUTS.

Wow, there is a room in chapter
5 that has nothing but a bloody restraining chair and the sound of an unhinged woman laughing moderately. That sort of stock shlock shouldn't work, but it does.

I know upgrading the starter pistol will totally screw me I should have held off until I at least got the shotgun and crossbow!

I do have to say that the stealth gameplay works in the horror style they are going for, but man sometimes you just get boned because you underthink a scenario.

The starter pistol is relevant throughout the entire game, FWIW. I never replaced it as a bread and butter weapon, and while it's shit vs. bosses, it's good vs. enemies throughout. I don't think there are any trap upgrades. Level 5 broadhead bolts are fantastic though, as they one hit kill everything but mini-bosses.

    As a minor note:
    * Unlike Resident Evil, you do not fill your magazine when upgrade its size. Your magazine doesn't count towards your ammo stored capacity, so upgrading it indirectly allows you to carry more total ammo
    * You do fill your health whenever you upgrade your max health.

Ok good so upgrading its capabilities didn't hose me. I just know that can play out like that.

I do have to give a nice middle finger to bethesda for not having the double barrel shotgun be upgradeable at all. "Heres a preorder bonus that uhh is barely a weapon you'll use."

Heck, if anything, I recommend dumping a lot of upgrades into the starting pistol. I had damage and ammo storage maxed out by end game, and I don't regret it at all. The weapon balance is fantastic in this, where everything is really useful and works in concert. My only minor criticism is the special bolts seem a little too pricy trap parts wise, so I never really used them outside of boss battles, and I think it would be fun to use them a little more often.

    I got past that
chainsaw guy by basically blowing all my explosive bolts on him as I led him through a yakkety sax chase up and down the ladder between the 2nd and ground floor of the barn he's caged up in. I think it took 4 exploding bolts and a grenade to finally kill his ass

If you got the preorder survival pack when you got to chapter 3 it was just in your inventory, you can swap the regular shotty for it on the select screen, but again it has zero upgrades and shooting it dumps two rounds into the target whether you wanted to or not.

The chainsaw guy is what I hate about these games. It's so unforgiving and I'm not fighting the guy, I'm fighting the crappy camera and combat mechanics since I can't strafe. It's driving me crazy, completely stuck.

The enemy you are talking about is surprisingly less dangerous up close than you think. There are a lot of dead zones in that enemy's attacks that are safe to stand in (this is true throughout the game. A lot of enemies with one hit kill melee attacks tend to have limited ability to actually strike you with them. Of course, a single mistake is a game over, so it is still high risk). Also, I kited that enemy around in the building you first encounter him in.

18 minutes in and this game has already found a way to piss me right the hell off.
Hid in a locker and the guy with the chainsaw smashed the door open. Fine, great. I sneak past each doorway while he isn't looking, and then wait for him to head back to the one facing away from the door on the far end of the room. I head through the door and hide on the right-hand side until he's not looking my way. As soon as I cross the doorway to make my way further on he notices me, even if he was facing the fucking opposite direction. He comes running at me and I get a chainsaw through my chest.

What the hell is going on?! I know he didn't see me, and one time I even waited until he was halfway across the room in the opposite direction before sneaking across the doorway, and he fucking turned around in mid-step to see me.

This isn't fun, scary or tense. It's just goddamn frustrating and not a good way to endear me to the game right off the bat.

Wait beside the first entrance. When he turns around go in the room and to the left. There is a bottle there. Toss it back towards the door you just entered to distract him then exit through the door opposite where you tossed the bottle.

So is that the only way you can possibly get past this part? Because I feel like I should've been able to sneak past him without the bottle and if it's scripted to notice you no matter what without it that's horseshit coming off the emergent stealth adrenaline high of Alien: Isolation.

FOV fix. Requires Cheat Engine so kind of a hassle but pretty much the only way to get a good fov. Can be combined with the "remove black bars" ini tweaks if they annoy you too.

Note if you install, CheatEngine comes loaded with Bloatware it tries to sneak onto you so make sure you read what you're installing and do a custom install, not express.

Holy shit, Chapter 7 was tense as hell. Lots of baddies, absorbing all my bullets and resources. Not to mention one hell of a frightening boss creature, when it comes down to it.

I think I'm roughly halfway through the game. I keep forgetting what chapter I'm on, until I beat it, and then I promptly forget again. I bee lined for max capacity for handgun ammo and the 50% crit on the starting pistol, and it does a pretty fine job of wading through normal enemies when the situation calls. I've barely used the crossbow, mainly because I find it cumbersome to swap bolt types mid-fight.

Personally, I'm finding this to be the best survival horror game I've played in probably as long as I can really remember. Maybe since Silent Hill 3? That seems almost too far back though, but the genre kind of died with RE4. It has it's issues, but the return of the survival aspect is greatly welcomed. It's a shame it's getting so much bad word of mouth.

  • Gaming-FreakGaming-Freak Registered User regular
I'm probably the exact opposite; I upgraded most of my innate abilities first, craving more health (which also restored my health completely per upgrade, so that was another boon), and getting a melee damage boost (while melee is pretty much ass, the damage is notable on higher upgrades, to the point where you actually CAN murder shit with just whacking it repeatedly then curb-stomping it). I only recently started upgrading the pistol, and my weapon of choice is usually the Agony Crossbow, mostly because those bolts are EXTREMELY useful.

Like seriously, the bolts and parts to make them might be hard to come by, but I can't think of more useful weapons. A bolt to freeze all enemies in the vicinity (including some boss-creatures), and the ability to shatter weaker-enemies when they're frozen; a bolt to incinerate all enemies in the vicinity of its target, which keep in mind, burning normal enemies = insta-death; an explosive bolt to do damage to all enemies in the blast radius, and can be launched to a surface to act as a land-mine; a normal and cheap to make bolt that can latch enemies to walls and instantly kill them; and a poison bolt that can attract enemies to instant kill whichever eats it first, which is perfect for... certain enemies that don't like to fight you legit (as in they like to sneak around).

Basically it's the best weapon in the game for your buck, but the bolts are harder to come by as a result. Upgrade the range so you can fire it straight, and you basically got a weapon of mass destruction when you desperately need one.

Of course you could always use grenades when you're desperate too, but Grenades are about as reliable as a sweater in summer.

Did you get all the keys in that chapter?

There is supposedly one key to be found
if you go through the doors the double-heads come out of when you use the spoked wheel to open the gate (that room where you can trick them into the large square pit then activate the trap to instantly juice them), but when I go in there I see a guillotine on the first level and a staircase into deadly gas, so I don't really know what to do.

Edit: Nevermind - you should choose the other path first so you can turn off the gas during that section.

Despite not having any ammo troubles since the first few chapters, I still try and conserve everything as much as possible. This kind of factors into me not using the crossbow as well, as it seems to be tailor made for pinch situations. The pistol, I don't care if I blow through some ammo with it, which is why I decided to upgrade the critical, so I could have a decent mook stopping weapon that I'd be able to use pretty much whenever.

I have no idea how much green gel you get in a typical play through, but so far I have had no shortage. I actually don't really know what to upgrade at the moment. I might actually pick up melee if it's decent. I was afraid even upgraded it would be useless, so hearing that it isn't is nice.

On an unrelated note, I found out if you time burning bodies with matches right, you can set other enemies on fire as they walk by. The enemies have to be almost on top of you for it to work, and the match lighting delay means it takes a bit of practice, but it has saved my life a surprising number of times. It's almost like having a miniature pool of oil everywhere you kill something.

Hum. I'm actually kind of awed. You mean the xbone is the preferred console choice? Thats a first.

Apparently the Xbox One version is utterly fucked:
What's worse, on Xbox One, it almost feels as if the renderer is out of sync with the game simulation. These particular issues don't appear in the performance metrics yet the issue is very much present. As a result, even when the game is rendering out 30fps, it sometimes feels worse than it should. To illustrate the issue, right-click, save as, and download this Xbox One clip, and compare it with this matched PlayStation 4 clip. Both games are rendering at a locked 30fps, but something's clearly very wrong with the Xbox One build. Looking at the numbers alone suggests that both versions produce similar performance metrics with some scenes even operating a touch smoother on Xbox One but, in practice, the Microsoft version feels worse, but ultimately, neither version feels particularly smooth during normal gameplay.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-the-evil-within-performance-analysis

So both console versions are bad, it appears.

Does anyone have first hand experience, is it ACTUALLY that bad? I fear my 560ti likely won't handle this game so I may have to duck out completely.

from what I understand, the recommended specs are lies.

I will say that locking the game to 30 fps is a pretty odd choice because it makes the decision to use id tech5 kind of pointless.

Well i picked it up for the PS4, and I havent regretted it. I havent had any bugs or felt the frame rate was poor or anything. I think most of the people complaining are just looking for something to complain about.

I will say that last night this game made me call my PS4 a whore. I didnt mean it honey....really...

    Chapter 6 spoiler:
I was about to go to bed since i had work the next morning, when i got to the sniper rifle area. I saw the mirror. Walked up to it about to log off....and a rock falls from the ceiling and smashes the mirror. I cursed the game, then i had to laugh. it was a really well done bit of psycological fuckyou by the game designers. That chapter basically has no saving from start to after you get into the towers. I was up late getting to the next mirror :)

Thinking I'm near the end of the game , loving the game so far . Though it is jarring that I get a feeling that I did this exact part of the game in re4. Then again I 100% RE 5 (before the dlc) and loved that game . So yeah near the end of the game almost NO ammo and barley scraping buy.

Sure, but thanks to obamacare in the fantasy world of The Evil within, all medical treatments needed to hit max health come in an easy to use needle.

For those tough things like ebola and cancer, use a med kit. You'll even feel younger and stronger for the experience!

As for the wet shirt? I didnt even notice and I'll admit i usually do notice these things. Your brightness is turned up way too high. I can barely see the characters in a (for this game) well lit room.
