Kinda like a junior Librarian. You do reference work, help people find items, databases, teach various classes, that kind of thing.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You should go to a library some day and just watch people look for things. 80% of the time people coming into a library don't even know what they are really looking for.

There will always be a need for reference staff, unless everyone in the country suddenly become smarter overnight.

So, that interview went alright. Unfortunately I don't meet the requirements for the 32-hour a week position, but I may be offered the position that could be anywhere from 8 to 24 hours a week.

I'm kinda torn, honestly. I could accept the job if offered and continue to get unemployment, and the job could turn into something more, so I don't know.

I guess I'll hear back tonight, anyway.

This doesn't seem possible to me but maybe that is a california thing

What you'll have to consider are the prospects within that company (will working there 12 hours a week help you qualify for the 32 h/w position? etc.) and whether or not you need a job now based on your financial situation

Ah, I don't think I gave enough info. I mean I would still get some unemployment if I had a part-time job - it's something like the first $25 or 25% (whichever is higher) is not counted, and whatever's left is subtracted from your unemployment check that week.

Poverty statistics are pretty meaningless without context. US Department of Health and Human Services estimates the poverty line at about 11k for a single person based on average CONUS cost of living, but they define poverty as "not enough money to acquire food, clothing, and shelter".

$37k sounds like a "live to expected standards of living" thing- just enough to have a real home, transportation, a few basic luxuries. Again, probably based on Nation-wide or CONUS averages.

Personally, I can't imagine having 37k a year for just me, but I grew up ass poor and my career path, while I love the work I'll be doing, is gonna leave me that way.

So I think if that job calls me to offer the one to three day position I'm probably going to say no. If I worked there I'd probably be spending most of my time looking for a full-time position and that'd be a shitty thing to do to an employer, regardless of how long it would take me.

Okay maybe just priority logistics sucks. We deal with forward deployed inventory, priority air cargo, rush couriers daily on the operations side.

I am glad I am not in operations anymore.

Don't worry about being shitty to an employer, cuz they're going to be shitty to you every chance they get.

It wouldn't be extra income, though. It'd be about the same I'd get from unemployment.

I'm unsure now. I mean they say it could lead to a full-time position but I can't count on it. Once my unemployment runs out and I'm not getting that in addition to the paltry hours they'd give me... what am I gonna do? I literally can't survive on 8-24 hours a week just by itself.

Yeah I dunno about the super critical time-sensitive type stuff

I'm just happy we're not doing shit by hand any more.

But it's had the fun effect of

Customer Service guys don't do shipping paperwork anymore

They have more time to write orders

Bigass bottleneck in shipping is revealed as we have more orders than we can prep in a given day

They've opened up a second 'lane' of shipping, with a third, possibly, to prep shipments to help

We are movin shit like GANGBUSTERS

Yup, this is my reasoning. If I was being offered the 32 hour a week job I'd gladly take that, since that'd probably be equal to or negligably more or less than what I'll probably get on unemployment. But a shaky schedule like 8-24 hours a week? Ugh.

    I am poop.

I am approximately a month from graduation, and I haven't done anything to prepare for non-academic life. I have no resume, no experience, and nothing lined up. I can try to go for an on-campus internship program, but I don't know how much that would apply to me, what with the whole "I'm about to graduate" thing.

If you don't have much work experience don't freak out, work up a résumé with any major accomplishments, scholarships, and your gpa. Talk to your favorite professors and see if they can pass it on.
