Bit more reading, it sounds like it could be duty + a UPS fee for handling that for you.
Apparently it's a real hassle to pay the import fee yourself now? I dunno.
Hmm, that's still a bit shonky cause its not something I agreed to. I'll check my receipts and if I haven't paid shipping then ok, but if I have I'm gonna quiz him.
checked and I have already paid $US30 for shipping (which is almost as much as the items) so an extra 20 quid on top of that is some excessive bullshit. I don't know if I've got much recourse at this point, since I doubt the delivery person is going to have any discretion about the fee, but I'm definitely not going to buy anything from modcloth ever again, I'll be emailing them about it and also UPS.
I'd find out exactly what it is. You say it isn't customs, for example, but I know in my role we absolutely do not compensate for customs fees or delivery fees, as that has nothing to do with us (says so on our website)
If they're trying to bill you for changing your delivery address, that's not necessarily ModCloth's fault, but I don't think UPS does that?
I'd call UPS directly and find out what the extra charge is for. Sounds like they're charging it, so they should know.
Address changes typically are an added charge, yeah.
Huh, really? I almost had to have them redeliver to a new address and they're like "as long as they've attempted delivery once, yeah we can change that"
I didn't wind up having to, though, so I don't know if they would have charged me, but they didn't say it would be a charge.
The charge was on the first delivery notice, so it's not an address change fee. Said 'cash on delivery'. The notice also said as long as they hadn't attempted delivery 3 times I could change address without additional charges.
I didn't say it wasn't customs, I just said it seemed too much. I looked up a customs calculator, which told me it should be at most 10GBP for VAT (which I'm not even sure applies in this case) and that customs duty is 0 for anything under 135GBP. So it could possibly be VAT+ UPS fee, in which case I'm ok with the VAT since I knew customs charges would be on me, but not whatever else has been added on. I will ask the delivery guy when I can, in case he knows, and otherwise contact UPS - but I'm going to email modcloth anyway because I think they should know that that kind of hidden fee is going to stop me shopping there again.
I only used UPS because ordinary post cost nearly as much and I thought 'oh well, why not pay a few extra bucks to get it two weeks earlier'.

That's accurate. It's only if they haven't attempted delivery and you're re-routing mid-shipment they'll charge the fee. It's really silly, but I suppose their thinking is 'if you're so desperate to get it re-routed mid shipment we might as well charge for it.'

That's not really fair. It's not ModCloth who "hid" that fee, and they gave you the option to ship with regular post, which I assume wouldn't have (such high) fees.
If it were a ModCloth-imposed fee, then yes, hold it against them, but it doesn't really sound like it's ModCloth's fault. They shipped with the shipping method that you indicated.

I'm not holding it against them, I'm telling them that there is an additional charge on UK customers which they may not be aware of, and that it's raising the shipping fees to the point where it's simply not economically sensible for me to shop there. I still don't actually know what the charge is for, but if it is UPS charging an extra fee to cover customs duties then I think that's a factor I should know about when choosing a shipping option. Personally I don't think it's fair to blame me for choosing a shipping option where the stated cost was considerably less than what it's going to actually cost me.
It's not "oh you're a horrible company for charging me more than was disclosed", it's "wow do you guys even know about this."

I always assume there's a customs fee for international shipping with UPS
If you think it's outrageous, I'd take it up with UPS, or with customs, though that'll get you nowhere fast
I mean, it's entirely up to you, but ModCloth literally has no control over customs or delivery fees. They just ship it.

They even cover it in their International Shipping page.
I guess because I work with it every day, I just assume that anything shipped internationally is likely to have some customs fee associated with it, because I see that every day.
EDIT: Also they can't tell you what customs fees will be, because they change constantly, they're based on where it's coming from and where it's going, plus what it is and how much it cost. So they couldn't possibly have informed you of that beforehand.
Sheri, I've said repeatedly. This is NOT a customs fee. The customs fee is at MOST 10 quid and this fee is double that. I have no problem paying any customs duty myself because I knew about that possibility at the outset - I do not know what this charge is for.

But you just said. . . you said you didn't THINK it was a customs fee
The possibility was raised that UPS charges a fee ON TOP of the customs fee for the 'service' of paying that for you, which is my current assumption for this charge. That is a) kind of bullshit (but that's all on UPS) and b) something that would be good to know about when selecting that as an option (and this is also on UPS because they may not have disclosed that to modcloth, but it's something they should be aware of or be made aware of).
Can you contact UPS before the delivery guy gets there? Maybe just call them and be like "what's up with this"
yeah I can but it's like 34c a minute. I might give it a shot.
Sorry, I said initially I didn't think it was a customs fee just cause it was too much to be that. Customs duty for clothing is not usually half the cost of the goods, so while it's possible that there is some customs stuff wrapped up in there, seems like there's something else going on.
I'm also really, really fucking tired cause I've been running on no sleep at all this week so I've gotten kind of antsy, sorry if I was being bitchy.

Don't be sorry it's okay I'm also a little touchy on stuff like that because my job is dealing with the other side (the "ModCloth side" if you will)
Does UPS not have a local number you can call, where it won't cost money?
Yeah, if I remember correctly both UPS and FedEx (and maybe DHL?) charge stupid fees when shipping international stuff, I think they call it a courier fee? Not sure how they get away with it but it definitely sucks

@lexxy dang I love those! anthropologie, you strike againnnnn! that place is trouble
guys this thread is about to be locked and I'm leaving for shanghai in an hour so someone else has to take over thread duty
I also probably won't be around much for a while so please continue to be very beautiful/fashionable while I am gone
that IS the local number! it's a toll number, man postal/courier companies can be such bullshit.
I can probably call them and at least find out exactly what's going on, but I doubt I can get out of paying the charge and I know it's gonna make me angry no matter what. Lose-lose I guess. I still do want to find out about it and tell modcloth, though; I think they should know.
It's actually exceptionally silly because I recently had really good dealings with UPS shipping stuff over from australia (20kg for under $200), so I was feeling kind of positive towards the company and all.

@tynic I would try the Twitter method first, to save yourself the cost of the call. They usually respond in a few hours and they're like "email this address with your info and tracking number" and then they take care of you via email
I've had great results that way, while calling is sometimes no help at all
btw @sheri thanks for talking me down just now. I was getting increasingly irate and frustrated at the whole damn world from this stupid thing and now I'm like "ok it's probably just customs+ some bullshit, it's not even that much money, let it go."
I'm just so bloody exhausted. I've been getting by on 3-5 hours sleep every night this week, thanks to insomnia and stress; finally got home last night and could sleep in but woke up at 6.15 anyway?? then I just crashed out on the couch after lunch for an hour and woke up feeling like utter shit. woo.
And I can't wait till next week where I have to get up at 5am to take a robot across to the other side of cornwall so it can chill out with a bunch of accountants all day. Oh and it's the same day we have a huge grant submission to put in, which I'm in charge of. Wow, I just realised how awesome that's gonna be.

I do not cope well without sleep I tell ya what. I get cranky. No wonder UPS is driving you nuts.
we were getting pretty giggly/stir-crazy by the end of the conference. On the last afternoon I programmed one of the desktop robots to say "don't get too close, I smell of cheese" if people were within a certain distance, and it turned into one of those things that just seemed to get funnier and funnier.

I love ex-wife jokes, but I feel like they're dangerous to make, these days.
For most situations, anyways.
One of my favorite ren faire bits ( not originally mine, sadly) was going up to any big guy in a scary barbarian outfit trying to look tough, pointing at his battle axe, and going, "Hey! What're you doing with my ex-wife?"
actually he probably smelt of something worse cause we were stationed directly outside the gents bathrooms, and the doors were always propped open. But we were trying to keep things vaguely professional.

Also, to chime in to middle name chat, I absolutely hate my middle name, to the point I never tell it to anyone. Very close friends and family are the only ones who might know. The problem is, it's my grandfather's name, a respect thing, so I couldn't ever change it.
Also I don't like my first name very much, which only makes this worse, because most people who dislike their first name use their middle.
