I don't know if this is fashion, but maybe? I started getting the paperwork together to get my name changed and I'm just 'abuhhhh?' about the whole thing. I don't like my name, and I haven't even been using it for the past 5-6 years, I've used a nickname for everyone but family and employers. But I guess my nickname is actually kind of odd and old-fashioned and a name people give to their dogs now, so I wouldn't be able to change my name to that because it would not be that great professionally.
So I'd sort of be changing my name for the second time now? I feel extraordinarily vain and odd about the whole thing. Isn't that what aspiring rock-stars and brides do? I'm neither.
And picking a new name is difficult, the first time I was trying to pick something similar to my real name and now I can pick whatever I want. It is too much freedom.
That is tough
I have a hard enough time naming my character in a video game; I can't imagine having to redefine the way I identify myself to the world (it would be Max Power, I would change my name to Max Power and that is what everyone would have to call me)
But if a girl decides she wants to be known as something else then a girl just gotta rename
There is apparently this whole sociological aspect to names, how they get picked for us and what they say about our background and how it colors people's perceptions of us. So I wonder what people have thought of me based only on the past two names I've used. The first one probably went something like, "Wtf how do you even pronounce that" and the second one was probably, "That can't be a real name no one is named that anymore other than animals". So it does feel oddly stressful to have to pick something new out.
My parents are both upset, understanding and confused, "Don't you already have a nickname?". I told them they should have picked out names you could have turned into nicknames, which was something my mother expressly did not want. She picked out names that would have to be pronounced in full.
I think I'll try using the name for a while before I file the paperwork.

Muse, I personally like your nickname, if that counts for anything.
When I moved to the new city I briefly considered going by my middle name, just for something new, but I know I'd never answer to it because I'm too used to my first name
I've been going by my middle name (or my last name) since I was eighteen. No one but my parents and strangers use my first name anymore, and sometimes I forget to answer to it.

Yeah my middle name is boring compared to my first name, or even my nickname.
of course now that I think about it, outside of the 5 people I work with there is literally only 1 other person in the city who knows my name
I guess I could still start telling people a different name to call me

I distinctly remember you having a difficult time pronouncing both my name and my nickname!

Exactly. I've been "Ahava" for so long online that being anything else is sometimes just weird.
I used to hate my middle name, but as i've grown up I've gotten better with it.
Now I kinda love it, as it is. but I hate the diminutive form still.
It's Abigail. Not Abby.

"Dan..."
"Dan!"
"... Infidel!"
"Hm?"
I guess I could still start telling people a different name to call me
Especially web AusPAX insisted on calling me by Gatsby. I'm fine with either it or my real name, Julian.
