When I came back to school I thought about adopting my full name, but my RA facebook-stalked me so the sign on my door had my shortened name and that's what people took to calling me.

    Awake at 6am again. Wtf.

Also I'm pretty sure my modcloth stuff came while I was away. I have a delivery notice from UPS and I'm trying to get them to redeliver to my work, but they want a £20 cash on delivery payment. :? I paid shipping already and i dont think its import duty because the total cost of the items was only like £50 and that's a hell of a tax.

Anyone know how I can find out a) what the charge is for and b) how to argue if it looks like bullshit?

  • FyndirFyndir Registered User regular
http://www.ups.com/content/gb/en/shipping/time/service/value_added/cod.html might be what they mean?

The only other thing I can think of is import stuff, but a little bit of googling turned up a lot of people complaining about them applying that to items that it wasn't meant to be applied to, so I dunno.

Never had to deal with it, personally.

Lyles is cool, yeah. If you are worried about it not being feminine enough, there's a few names that are quite close, like Lily or Lydia or something like that.

It's too much for VAT. And yeah I thought maybe shipping but I paid that already in the initial transaction? Ill have to print out the PayPal receipt and have a look. Also, if somehow I didn't pay shipping and its for that, that's a LOT more than the cost they gave at checkout, which was in the $20 range. So either way I'm pissed.

  • FyndirFyndir Registered User regular
Bit more reading, it sounds like it could be duty + a UPS fee for handling that for you.

Apparently it's a real hassle to pay the import fee yourself now? I dunno.

Hmm, that's still a bit shonky cause its not something I agreed to. I'll check my receipts and if I haven't paid shipping then ok, but if I have I'm gonna quiz him.

my middle name is Hunter. I'd guess most of you know that at this point via social networking.

It's become a bit of a running joke amongst my friends and work group that I'm definitely more of a Hunter and I should have been going by that instead of my first name, for a while now. But instead I made the stupid mistake of introducing myself as Kyle when I moved up to NY last spring and met all of them

    i have known:
    two girls named Spike
male and female Jesses, Jamie/ys, Erins, Ryans, Charlies, Becketts
and that's not even looking at the unusual names

having never run across a Lyles, i would be perfectly willing to parse it as unisex. i've got two fairly girly names, but i also respond to various gaming nicks (pooka, Spider) and family nicknames/variations on my names. it's kinda funny to hear the toddler hollering, "kway, kwuuuuuuaaaaaaay."

also, i painted my nails with the HEMA polish (850, "black spa", someone called it), and it just looks like i'm rocking gothblack today; can't see the blue sparkles unless you're inches away, sigh.

Huh, my parents changed their mind on the whole name change thing, "You were gonna do it anyway". They said they want to see my list of names tomorrow and will help me pick something out.

I figure I'll go for the whole shebang, first, middle and last. I think the last name might be tougher, really, the temptation to pick a ridiculously cliche surname (Powers! Steele! King!) is so much more potent.

I used to not like my name much as a kid, just from knowing other Heathers. But I never knew anyone could go by their middle name, and I had a classmate with my middle name as her first name (Stacy).

I did luck out that I never had a Heather as a classmate though, so I never had to be known by my last name.

And the name my parents gave me is infinitely better than what they said they were going to. My mother liked Magnolia. My dad liked Esmeralda. I have never actually figured out if my dad was screwing with me, or if he was serious.

But names are hard! I was recently talking about them with Dan for what we could name future babies. I got one of my names approved, and several of them vetoed.

Esmeralda is a beautiful name, I think. I know a girl with that name, she frequently goes by 'Esme'. I feel like people don't have much patience for names with more than two syllables, so if there is a way to feasibly shorten the name, people will. Something to keep in mind when you pick a baby name.

Oh and I asked my mom about the gypsy name and if she'd named me after a tv gypsy (I did some Googling), and she said yes, yes she named me after a tv gypsy.

[edit] I've always thought Lexi was a cool-ass name, it was and still is one of my favorites. Lexxy is lucky!

Esmeralda is a lovely name. Just not good for a super awkward kid. With the Disney movie coming out when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade, and with kids being little shits, I still wonder if I would have been made fun of more.

  • Muse Among MenMuse Among Men Suburban Bunny Princess? Its time for a new shtick Registered User regular
Yeah, I really wanted to go by Lexxy when I was a younger teen, but decided to pick a nickname that wouldn't upset my parents too much.

@Futore: A lot of people had already known me by my real name when I made the switch to the nickname. You just have to insist they use your new name. I never bothered with family, but in time everyone else (if perhaps begrudgingly) was using my nickname exclusively. You could still try to change to Hunter, if it sticks it sticks, if it doesnt, at least you tried.
