I've done the flying thing and it's been a very pleasant experience so far. TSA looked at my ID, threw me a smile, and that was it. Anecdotal, but there you go.

Yeah, flying can either be fine, or the TSA can be horrible. It may just be because I live in Washington, but my flying experiences have been positive.
In a possibly unintended consequence of these threads, being more educated about these issues, and knowing all you wonderful people I am now arguing with some goose in the comments section of fucking Imgur of all places.
When I get into those situations I remind myself how lucky I am to be able to put those issues aside if I choose to rather than having them as a daily fact of life.
Ugh, flying and dealing with the TSA is already horrible enough as it is, I can only imagine how awful it will be when I'm full time as a girl.
I almost goofed a couple years ago while checking in a flight. I was checking in a couple and I noticed the woman was listed as male. I started to change it and tell her that the person who did the res made a mistake, but luckily I looked at her driver's license and it also said male.
"Whoops, looks like someone...didn't seat you together! Ok, it's all set now"
She didn't have any trouble with TSA but I could see the hushed whispering and backwards glances
While the loss of privacy is certainly extra-sucky for a trans person, it looks like TSA has reasonable policies in place. I can't really think of what more they could do other than lowering scrutiny across the board. Could be cis privilege talking? Maybe not having gender on the forms? But there's more (at least implicitly) gendered info on an ID than the "sex" box, so would that even help, outside of situations where the name and pic were accurate but "sex" wasn't?
I'm not saying it's not bad, it certainly is a situation that could turn out very embarrassing, if not traumatizing. I guess I'm just asking what should be different?
For a moment I thought "well, so long as the agents follow their own policies and behave with common sense and basic human desency...", then I remembered TSA
Also, if you're worried about checking in and having the person at the counter say something, just tell them you lost your ID. If you're flying domestically you don't need ID, so just check in at the counter without ID, then take it out when you go through screening.

Pretty much exactly this. The TSA agents checking our bags and checking us are untrained, poorly vetted, sometimes criminals, and almost always jerks. I know plenty of folks in commercial aviation and they don't like the "Taking Scissors Away" agents as they call them.
I suppose the TSA are just an example of how people in authority -sometimes scary people in authority with guns and handcuffs- can make life annoying, terrifying, or ruinous for an LGBT person.

Well this is my first Mother's Day.
It's weird that people are wishing me a happy Mother's Day. Not really weird so much as unexpected. But, as it was explained to me, I'm a lady who's helping to raise three kids, so that makes me a mom.

Still, it's fucking weird.

Miss me? Find me on:

all three would have been named elizabeth if they were daughters, my mother loves that name and is somewhat saddened that the gender coin toss never came down daughter after five tries at it
I went by Grace when presenting female for a while because I used to have a roommate named Grace and whenever anyone would call one of our names we would think they were talking about the other one and I thought it was funny.
Considered Erica for a while because I was always told I looked like my name should be Eric (???).
Thinking Simone now because "Max-Simon" was the French name I pulled out of a hat my first day of French class way back when, and so I spent a not insignificant amount of time being called that for six years of my life.
edit: pretty much all academic at the moment anyway.

I can't believe this is 10 years old.
Also it turns out my name would have been Taylor, so double whammy there.
