My only concern with team-ups is it seems like turns would take much longer having to coordinate back and forth between every action (especially if there's a huge time zone difference).

We managed it pretty well in the last game - it only took us seven months to finish (which is how long I presume that 12-player face-to-face game took)!
That said, if people who didn't get in last time would rather play solo, I can be left out.

Eight months, actually - one month per round is an expected case.
If teammates have to coordinate every single action, yes, it can slow the game down. But if there's good communication, then each can act without need of the other's input and make the game go faster. It all depends on how people play it.
In any case, it looks like the best option is to have two separate games - I'll draw six players from the people with some experience for this one (considering that house rules will make things a bit more complicated) and then the remainder can be drawn for MrBody's game (which may be a mix of new and experienced players). Hopefully that'll work? I don't plan on doing the draw until tonight, so there's still time to discuss.

I am down with that. If there is a New Guy game, perhaps we could use fewer expansions to simplify matters?
The RNG has spoken, and chosen the following players for this game:
Player 1: caliber Player 2: Fidoh Player 3: Void Slayer Player 4: MrBody Player 5: Lykouragh Player 6: robinlambert
Apologies to all other people who signed up but didn't get in - but I'll keep your names in reserve in case one is needed. In addition, hopefully MrBody will have another game running soon so that you'll be able to play.
For galaxy creation, 32 system tiles have been shuffled together, comprising 4 red-bordered systems, 8 empty systems (including both wormhole systems), and 20 regular systems (including both wormhole-containing systems). Two systems have been randomly taken out of the stack and each player has received 5 tiles. Tile distribution has been constrained such that each player has approximately the same number of empty or red-bordered systems. In turn, players will place tiles to the board observing the following restrictions:
Each ring must be filled completely before moving on to the next, starting from the center and moving outwards.
Special systems with red borders may not be placed adjacent to one another.
If a player has placed a system containing no planets, then a system containing at least one planet must be placed on their next turn.
Once all tiles have been placed, eight races will be drawn and each player will have a choice of selecting a start position (A-F) or a race in the following order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
caliber may make his first system placement at any time.
EDIT: As promised, I shall list the potential list of objectives from which the Public Objectives line will be created:
Stage I
[1 VP] I have 5 Technology Advances.
[1 VP] I have Technology Advances in all 4 colors.
[1 VP] I now spend 8 resources or 8 influence.
[1 VP] I new spend 3 Command Counters from my Command and/or Strategy Allocation areas.
[1 VP] I am blockading an opponent’s Space Dock or have destroyed an opponent’s Space Dock this turn.
[1 VP] I won a Space Battle against at least 3 opposing ships in one system this turn.
[1 VP] I successfully invaded one planet containing at least 1 opposing Ground Force or Mechanized Unit this turn.
[1 VP] I took control of 3 planets this turn.
[1 VP] I control 5 planets outside my Home System.
[1 VP] I control Mecatol Rex.
Stage II
[2 VP] I have 5 Technology Advances of the same color.
[2 VP] I have at least 9 Technology Advances.
[2 VP] I now spend 16 resources or 16 influence.
[2 VP] I now spend 6 Command Counters from my Command and/or Strategy Allocation areas.
[2 VP] I won two Space Battles this turn, each in different systems and against at least 3 opposing ships.
[2 VP] I successfully invaded two planets, each containing at least 1 opposing Ground Force or Mechanized Unit, this turn.
[2 VP] I control 10 planets outside my Home System.
[2 VP] I control the Mecatol Rex system and at least 3 systems adjacent to it. I "control" a system if I have at least one (non-Fighter) ship there, and I control every planet in the system.
[WIN] Domination!: I control all the planets in the Home Systems of two other players and have at least 4 (non-Fighter) ships in each.
[GAME OVER] Imperium Rex: As soon as this card is revealed, the game ends immediately. The player with the most victory points wins the game.
Fidoh has conditional orders to place the El'nath (2R, 0I, B) system in 1-6. It is now Void Slayer's turn to place a system tile.
EDIT: Oh, right - for systems that have no worlds, their placing player may elect to name the system so that it may be uniquely identified. I'll name any systems that remain unnamed at the end of galaxy building.

caliber: Place Empty system "Void's Smile" at 1-3. Fidoh: Place El'nath system at 1-6. Void Slayer: Place Supernova system "Pride" at 1-5. MrBody: Place Lodor system at 1-1. Lykouragh: Place Cormund system at 1-2.
Generally no, although unless a player asks for it I tend to give them at least a few hours. Some people can't post from work and such. For someone with a space, enclose the name in quotes after the @ symbol. Quote my post to see precisely what I mean: @Void Slayer
Place Ashtroth (2R, 0I) - Abaddon (1R, 0I, R) - Loki (1R, 2I) at 2-10.

Lykouragh, MrBody, and Void Slayer are last to place in the middle ring.
System placement on the outer ring will then start with Lykouragh, followed by robinlambert, caliber, Fidoh, Void Slayer, and MrBody, then snaking back.

MrBody already said his game would be running a simpler game, part for newbies and part because I think it is just easier to run.
Can we be guaranteed a different race from last time, pretty please?
