I will never cease to be amazed how wishy washy businesses can be about having easy money thrown at them. Half the reason I like dealing with Barca and SiS is because they don't fuck around like everyone else does. Needless to say, there is now a 99.9999% chance this will be at Barca again. Andy from SiS and Dan from Barca are both super excited to be working with us again.

The menu is getting sorted and things will be finalized in a couple weeks. They'd be done sooner but I'm out of town foe two more weeks. Stay tuned though because this thread will be getting awesome in June!

Getting awesome? It's already awesome. So glad you're going with SiS again, their food was amazing. And Barca has always been great hosts.

Barca has been a great venue for us for a while. The location for the drinking tournament can't be beat either. I'd say go with the easy option and stick with Barca again.

    TENTATIVE MENU!!!!
(And I say tentative because I wanna let you guys look at it and comment on it before I start throwing money at SiS)

    PLANT STUFF
    - Field & spinach greens with Maracuja vinaigrette topped with seasonal berries, mandarin orange, shallots, walnuts, and feta.
    - Steamed Basmati Rice
    - Black beans simmered with savory spices, bell pepper, crisp garden vegetables, and lime.

    WHITE MEAT STUFF
-Brazilian slow roasted marinated chicken breast with tomato, ginger, coconut, and jalapeno sauce

    RED MEAT STUFF
-Coffee marinated flat iron steaks char grilled with cracked pepper and topped with fresh spices and herbs.

    BREAD STUFF
    -Basket o' bread

Everything except the bread is gluten free!

Comments, thoughts, etc.? Is the plant stuff listed solid for a vegetarian spread? This is all easily changed so speak up now!

Ticket price is roughly sitting at 25 bucks per person again with the way things are set currently.

Looks good to me. Sounds amazing. I grew up with some vegetarians and that sounds like one of the best types of meals. Rice, black beans, and one killer salad. :)

    - Biting's excellent! It's like kissing. Only there's a winner.

Sounds delicious to me. I can't speak to the vegetarian question, but those look like good meat choices (barring a fish offering, which I'm sure would up the price point). Unless people like their food on the bland side, it looks like a good range of tastes to offer.

Not to be a downer, but coffee steak?? That sounds a bit odd

That steak sounds nice. Haven't tried coffee based marinades yet. I usually marinate with sour beers.

Just hoping that this will be a part of my evening, as Thursday is getting filled quickly.

I'm personally not a fan of it, but I don't like the taste of coffee so that's just me. That said, I understand how it "works" to those who aren't offput by coffee flavour. It's actually pretty good if that doesn't kill it for you. There's another place here in town that does a coffee-crusted boar that is similarly excellent (to others), so don't be off-put by the coffee angle if the grounds taste isn't a bad thing to you.

I'm not a huge fan of coffee to begin with. I enjoy tea and crumpets much more, but you can't marinate a steak in tea and crumpets!

    Or... Can you??

Tea, yes, though it's mostly used for duck and goose. Crumpets no - but you can integrate them into a rub!

Coming from the vegetarian angle, I've gotta say, sounds yum!

Might want to make sure the feta is optional for the salad, for any vegans. (I know, I know...us herbivores can be such a demanding bunch. =/)

I'm sure it'll be appreciated. Not sure how many vegans are likely to attend, so it may be a moot point (I could never go that route, love my sunny-up eggs too much for that!)

I'm very pro-vegan and cook for my vegan friends a lot. But having the feta separate is difficult from a food prep perspective and not really worth it unless you get a specific request from someone that is coming. Also, I'm sure that this is the case because this caterer sounds really professional, but you might want to make absolutely sure that the beans aren't simmered in any form of meat broth.

The red meat looks delicious. I would really want the salad without nuts so I could at least have steak and salad.

The menu looks amazing. I am not a huge coffee fan either but I bet the steak will be pretty awesome either way. I am looking forward to trying a coffee marinate.

  • LexiconGrrlLexiconGrrl Registered User regular
It sounds like there's not a ton of excitement around the coffee steak. Maybe they could do a different marinade or a plain steak instead?

The coffee marinade doesn't add as much coffee flavoring as you might think. The times that I have had coffee crusted or marinated steaks (not from this place) it adds a different flavor to the steak but it is certainly not like chewing coffee.

If I recall it was open to minors a few years ago because I remember having the option of going but deciding not to.
This year I am 21 so I am considering it again.
Will be interested in following the details of menu and price.

True, but a lot of people won't know that, and it sounds (to me at least) like an option that isn't going to be as universally appealing as catering should be. More like the kind of thing you'd see on a restaurant menu where there are many choices than on a catering menu when it's the only red meat option. Just my 2 cents.

I personally can't stand anything remotely coffee flavored either. but I'm more of a chicken guy anyway and that chicken sounds *awesome *

Not to be too picky, but are there any options for a vegetarian entree? Beans, rice, and salad are great and all, but maybe something like a pasta or a veggie lasagna?

  • TOGSolidTOGSolid Drunk sailor Seattle, WashingtonRegistered User regular
Hokay so based on the feedback it looks like:
    A) Coffee steak needs to be swapped out
    B) Maybe something more involved for vegetarians?

Didn't know there was such a dislike of coffee around here. I remember seeing it used on Chopped and it definitely got my interest... though I've never gone ahead to try it at home. Coffee isn't that uncommon when it comes to red meats. Anyway, I was looking forward to it, but this may just spur me to make a mess in the kitchen this weekend.

Had a nice time last year and will be bringing a friend this go-around.
