i'm not saying people are wrong for being competitive about shit, i just think it's important to not lose sight of the fact that not everyone is as competitive as you are
so the "take your bags and go home" attitude is really shitty because it's basically saying "you're not as competitive as i am? fuck along now this is where the adults are turning cardboard rectangles sideways"
Steam: Chagrin LoL: Bonhomie
i am glad that i'm done with prerelease
i hope to god that they do m14 without doing this stupid pick a thing bullshit
so tired of it
so tired
You can't hate BFL or Bugboy. It is impossible. They have protection from hate.
fucking
watch me
I can agree with this. The only thing is that you are not talking about competitive players, you are talking about assholes. Competitive players /= assholes.
Orzhov/Golgari - The best possible guild mix? Only deck fast enough to kill it before I stabilized the board was a Rakdos/Grull aggro deck, and it cost them dearly
Tithe Drinker/Sin Collector/The Black Gatekeepers are all fantastic cards that are either 2 for 1ing them or netting you a metric fuck tonne of life.
Especially for a prerelease.
Top 8 cuts at a release seem like the focus too many prize packs in the hands of too few people.
Now I am all hot and bothered.
One last thing: Most of the people at my LGS also have casual and EDH decks and can play a casual game and have fun. I imagine that is the case for a lot of competitive players.
agreed
i'm not saying all competitive players are like this
i think that there are some people who place a lot of importance on it and then think that because it's a tournament with prizes they're the only ones whose opinion about tourneys matters
nah dogg
you ain't the only pebble on the beach
ain't even the only kind of pebble
they're double that on SCG right now
Prereleases are just the ultimate casual.
prereleases, to me, are like the ultimate casual thing
the focus isn't even on the prizes
it's on playing a game with the new cards and having fun
at least, that's the intended focus. that's why wotc's been doing more to get the players involved in the prerelease itself beyond just cracking packs and deck-building
which is why someone saying something like 'just pack up your bags and go home' rankles the shit out of me
yeah i am down with this
fnm really can go either way
we have a lot of dudes who use it to finetune shit, but we have just as many who are just there to play magic and have fun
it works
people who act like jerks get treated with scorn
one of our superspikes was going on and on about crushing some kid who had never played before and i was like, fuckin really dude? get over your shit, you beat a twelve year old.
then the next round starts and one of our regulars literally just built a deck for the kid out of stuff she had laying around and was like "here merry christmas have fun"
One time, we had this semi cocky kid ( but he was a kid, like 12-13), pestering me for a game of overkill ante( every point below 0 life = an additional ante card), cause he had some deck that was tuned for my usual tournament deck.
I finally agreed, and pulled out my Johnny deck at the time, which was based around Homarid Spawning Bed, Hell's Caretaker, Leviathon's and Marton Stromgald. Proceeded to stall, got homarids to around 50-60 tokens, and came in with marton for 10k+ damage.
Store owner was even in on it telling kid, hey you asked for overkill ante, your entire box should cover half, we'll keep a tally til you get paid off.
We kept him going for about 20 mins, then let him off hook and I tossed him a stack of some staples of the day.
My lgs, which is the only place that is even remotely reasonable for me to drive too to play wizard poker, only does top 4 for prizes. 1st gets like 10-12 packs, it's nuts.
One of the reasons I stopped doing standard, because my entry fee was basically just paying for cards for the 6 or so guys that make a run at the pro tour each quarter.
just the funniest thing in the world
see we do prizes based on record
4-0 gets 12, 3-0-1 gets 8, 3-1 gets 4
for prerelease only mind you
it works pretty well. if you do decent you get stuff, if not, you played some magic and got some cards, and it doesn't feel like the only people being rewarded are the four guys who always win
edit: Seen him bloodrushed, scavenged counters onto, and lifelink/trample enchanted so far already, the RNG gods seemed to have decided he was gonna be 90% of the 2 drops at ours
I didn't even know the prerelease was this weekend until my friend called to find out what pre releases I was going to
I'm dead serious."
Sitting at 2-1, need to go 2-2 in the last four rounds to earn prizes
You can do it!
What guilds
I tweaked it between rounds, and I can't wait to see how it fares
I played my first actual game-store tournament earlier this week (just a silly bring-any-three-packs draft), and there was a stereotypical very overweight loud neckbearded guy there. Not only was he enough of a dick to make his first opponent (who was apparently sort of new to tournaments or Magic, couldn't tell which) leave after the first game, he proceeded to exclaim how he made a guy "scoop the tournament after one game", about 30 or 40 times by the end of the night. He was obviously a good player, beat me 2-0 in round 3 and didn't lose a game, but way to make a fun little event less fun for people.
I was glad he ended up getting second place, and the guy who got first was a more normal human being (proving that competitive skill /= asshole).
also three different guild runners,
its me i gots the magic
is that a thing
if it is it's dumb
azorius and rakdos utterly dominated the implicit maze at my shop of preference
I only complain if the person insists that he or she came up with it independently of the net. If it's an obvious archetype like Naya Blitz or something, then yeah that's at least possible, but I once played a game against someone who had almost a carbon copy of Omnidoor Thragfire and insisted he hadn't seen the deck anywhere else.
I don't know if he saw me rolling my eyes but I wasn't exactly trying to hide it so
no that's legit, i'm talking about people getting mad about it happening at all
i guess it's a thing?
it's pretty dumb though
I had Ral's ultimate prepared and then
Teysa punches him in the face
Ouuuch
