So, I found a prepaid credit card that I won a while back, so apparently I will be playing online now? Buggerrrr I need to resist all urges to buy cardboard crack.

I have never forsaken wizards until now and before i was irked about the mana burn issue but these other changes are fundamental differences I fell like I have to go back and relearn how to play all over again. I am not trying to act elitist or anything else cuz I am not I am just a concerned player of what was once a great game, and I am afraid magic is over the hill and I would have to say almost 17 years was a great run, and to be honest I would love to hear what Garfield would say about these changes.
But like others I will play still but it will be "old school" and I will die a little inside everytime I buy cards because my money goes towards a bunch of scrubs who care nothing for players and only worship the almighty dollar. sometimes capitalism is a thorn in my ass.

Ok I get that Wizards has their heart in the right place but look what they done by trying to SIMPIFY THE GAME. Half of the time I was reading these rules I had to stop and think about what the heck were they trying to say.
The blocking stages, in order of attacker and defense, no STACK after declaring damage is slowing down the game I think most of us have gotten used to. The end may not be Nigh but the game will get boHring and maybe we should all just buy basic core sets and play with RHOX! The naming is completely unnecessary I was just adjusting to reach, deathtouch, lifelink, now I gotta memorize new IN game name, battlefield?? That clears it right up.
The new style for combat may not be all garbage but please, D&D 4th edition ruined one game for me, LET NO THIS BE ANOTHER ONE.
So anyone feel Cryptic Command will be in Modern Masters? I've got one in my cube, but I'm watching one about to finish on Ebay for about 20ish I'm thinking about getting for my Commander deck.

So I was playing Izzet-Gruul but I ended switching to Jund because I had two Putrefys, over Izzet Staticaster and Catch/release, after I went 1-3 in the tournament, the winner suggested I go 5-color bomb and play my Pontiff of Blight, catch/release, breaking/entering, jehanna sphinx, basically all my uncommons, but not my skylasher.
Blood Baron would have looked fantastic foil though I imagine. Did you end up going with that over the mimic?
Both are going in my Cube I think, Stillmoon Cavalier hasn't been been lighting the world afire for a while, so Baron will probably replace him, Mimic I'm unsure but probably Simic Charm, which was not all that popular. Urban Evolution tends to get taken before it.

I think it's a good bet.
Yeah, I bid on it but the high bidder was willing to go to 28 and I don't need it.
I have never experienced anything like that before
That was crazy

Wizards is on a roll. First D&D 4.0 to completely alienate and abandon all 3.5 players and material, then these MTG additions (Mythic Rares, rules changes, etc.) to completely alienate old magic players. This is amazing! They've spoiled two products I've managed to enjoy for more than 10 years (D&D Basic > 3.5, obviously) in less than 1 year! And for what? Mass marketing! That's the true secret to goods and fame! Make the masses buy the product!

One the one hand, Cryptic Command seems like a big fucking duh as far as fulfilling the criteria of Modern Masters. On the other hand, they haven't told us a single card beyond goyf and Dark Confidant, so who the fuck knows?
So I lost 1-3, but the store gave away a Simic prerelease box at random among players that got no prizes, and I won. Out of those packs, I got a Stomping Grounds and a Watery Grave. So, lucky me!
Also, I got a whole bunch of Simic cards so I think I am going to build a Simic deck. For fun.
@Bugboy hi5! Wait, who is the Simic twin? Is there a Simic twin?

Case in point why Swiss Sucks Shit for these things (I understand why it's necessary, it just sucks)
I play a really tough, tough, tough game against a dude. He just happens to get a frontline medic out on turn 3 or 4 each time and I get fucked. I end up drawing my removal spell one turn too late. If I had my arrest spell (which came next) I also could have eked out a win with extort and eliminating his creatures post combat. Fucker also had the damn mythic rare selesyna two drop every game.
So I come off playing this guy and I am so pumped and excited about these tough games that I'm on tilt. I made one mistake my next round and it snowballs out of control. I mis-tap my mana and am unable to smite an evolving trample monster. Part of it was I was on tilt, the other part is that I was playing a kid and wasn't giving him my full attention, i.e. thinking it was going to be a learning game. He beat me bad after it snowballed in the first game, and the second game I couldn't do anything, he just rushed me down and I died.
I did when the final game handidly, extorting until I was at about 30 health and watching my opponent die of stab wound.
BUT TIME FOR THE SHAMMALLAMA TWIST YOU BROSEFS WERE NEVER ANTICIPATING!
The dude who beat me with the crazy battle-medic/mythic 2 drop? He went on to the finals match and lost to my friend. At the time, they were both 4-0.
Now, because I was on tilt and because I didn't take my match with a kid seriously, it affected a dude who was previously playing for the grand prize. He lost the match and ended up finishing fourth, taking home four packs instead of either a box or half a box.
That's why I'm not a fan of swiss as a be-all-end all sort of thing. It basically becomes a casual game if you lose the first round, and sometimes you end up screwing up someone else's fun because you played casually instead of like you wanted to.
I honestly do feel bad about it, because playing that guy was my favorite game of the night, and a huge part of it was because of the amount of stakes that were involved with winning or losing that match. Plus it was legitimately the closest I played one that day.
I didn't feel too bad for the guy though. He wanted to split the final pot, which if he had would have meant he tied for 2nd and would have gotten 2/3rds of a box while knocking the other guys who actually played their match down a slot. So in a sense, he got what he deserved by going for the split.

so the solution is clearly screw up your own fun? i don't even know what the appropriate response to this is other than "why does everyone need to be competitive at every single event where there's any kind of a prize ever"
especially at prerelease
where, again, the intended focus is not on being Prerelease Champ
I'm home! I ended up 2-2 after going up 2-0 in the early game. I was Gruul, but Rakdos was my backup and I pulled a rakdos out of it. I also pulled Breaking/Entering, and Entering is CLUTCH

it's about having fun playing with the new cards
Everyone doesn't have to agree with me, people play for their own reasons. The reason why my friend didn't split was because he wanted to play the game as a competition, he doesn't even play magic. He said he'd toss me a couple rares if I gave him some common cards for our cube.
People play for their own reasons, I don't think swiss is a great way to make everyone happy but I understand why it's done the way it is. And when I go to prerelease, I want to be competitive because it's a time where I get to be competitive. I don't have the money to buy cards that I need on demand so FNM doesn't have the same thrill. I play no-stakes casual cube draft on Sundays where the environment is lax because I enjoy the lax environment, knowing that if my buddies really wanted to build their A game from drafting, they could. I get the most fun out of building a deck from limited construction and trying to do my absolute best.
And that's just me.

wunderbar now explain to me that whole "oh no i played casually SOMEONE ELSE HAD LESS FUN" thing
because that just boggles my mind
oh no, someone...didn't have fun being hyper-competitive at an incredibly casual event....because you weren't being competitive?
i feel like as long as you're not going out of your way to be a dick to people whether or not your playstyle is infringing on their ability to have fun should not be a primary secondary or tertiary concern
this goes both ways too just so nobody jumps up my ding dong

I played lax and it ended up screwing the guy out of his winnings, and he was there in part for the winnings because he was trying to split.
Literally, if I had played my A game and won he would have finished 2nd place. I lost my next round and so he ended up in 4th because of how Swiss works.
I'm not trying to be condescending here, he ended up having less fun as a result of something he had absolutely no control over.

This prerelease was really wonky though, given all the cards. I think it took everyone an hour to figure out what the fuck they were going to do.

My store runs a single elim tournament with 18 players capped, 6 events over the weekend.
i guess if your local meta is spikey as shit that's cool but i can't help but think it misses the point of what wotc is trying to accomplish with these prereleases
which is "make people excited about cards"
"oh i was the nineteenth person guess i don't get to play in the only one i could make it to" and "i lost round one i guess i'm done" ain't all that exciting
for anyone
if people enjoy it that's cool i'm speaking solely for myself and not attempting to pass judgment or whatever
we do four rounds of swiss, five to seven flights, no cap on players
everyone just shows up and plays
the competitive guys do well because they're on their game and playing for keeps and have fun winning
the people who just want to play with the new cards and have a blast have fun playing a bunch of magic at midnight with a bunch of other nerds
it's just a big hot stinky crazy mess and as much as it sucks working the register during it it is absolutely a blast when it's done
ButtlordFornicusLord of Bondage and PainRegistered Userregular
because saying "hey i'm playing a game now that i've lost and my time playing in the prerelease lasted fifty minutes counting deck construction" is just as fun as saying "i'm playing in the prerelease"
not every event with a prize pool needs to be structured in a super competitive way
if it works for you guys that's cool keep doing it
i just disagree with it on a real fundamental level
