Biggest home console launch weekend in the UK second only to the PSP's 185,000 unit launch weekend.
3/4's of the UK's 220,000 unit allocation sold, allegedly a 'plan to ensure units at retail'.
Comparison: Wii 105,000 units opening weekend; X360: 70,000 units opening weekend.
I posted this in the big LOL Sony launch thread, but figured most people are bored of that now, so thread for a bit of positivity? Without the bitching? Maybe?
Launch numbers mean almost nothing, as they're almost always limited by supply. The fact that this is one of the first launches ever that hasn't sold out demonstrates that it's not a good launch at all, in stark contrast to what the numbers would have you believe.
This is the first launch I'm aware off that hasn't sold out. Thats interesting because that lets you work out what the demand actually is.
Would the Wii have sold out if it had as many machines as the PS3? Probably as it's still in out of stock now.
Walking around Nottingham this saturday - ever shop had plenty of PS3s - but I saw no one buy any, though I did see one guy lining up to buy VF5 (I think). Virgin and Game had signs saying the Wii was out of stock however.
I think all that can be drawn from this is they would have done a hell of a lot better if they had launched early. If you believe their figures they stockpiled about 25% too much stock.
Wait...even when it beats the previous big console's numbers in launch, it's not a good thing just because it has units left...? I am not following. What would be a good thing then?

We're talking about demand. Sony had plenty of consoles, some are left over.
Other companies didn't have enough to meet demand and some still don't. Sony has met demand in many ways.

How many of those were tied to free home appliances?
I work in a game store and its true we never have Wii's in. Its also true that we never get any Wii's in the first place and when we do they're allocated to the 103 pre-orders we're still waiting to fill.
So Sony producing more than enough and selling that many in a non seasonal time? Yeah, Sony++.

What this is saying is that out of all of the people in the UK, 165,000 of them wanted a PS3 enough to go out and buy one this last weekend.
I think post-launch sales are going to be more interesting. Normally with a console launch the thing is sold out, and it is easy to assume any units that show up will quickly be purchased. What is going to happen to the PS3 now? I wonder what the next few months will look like...
It seems to me that what's important for the Sony PAL launch isn't so much how many they sold that day, but how many they sell in the next month. It's the only launch I can remember that didn't sell out - but it also had a much greater supply than most, so the real question is does demand for a very expensive console extend beyond the day one early adopters? The problems for Sony will arise if the units that weren't snapped up at launch gather dust on store shelves over the coming weeks.

True, one weekend isn't enough. Give it a couple years.
Nice to see someone finally launch with enough numbers to avoid the usual "sold out for months" BS. Kudos to Sony for that. Good to see I could actually buy a unit today had I wanted to.
Shame (not really, though, says my wallet) Sony released the PS3 here so late, expensive, and devoid of killer launch exclusives many folks have all but lost interest for the immediate future.
Drop the price, get some more games, see you in a couple of years depending on what Microsoft and Nintendo do in the meantime.
Oh, and props for the [email protected] thing Sony; that shit is just awesome.

I think a year after all the major consoles have been released in all major regions is enough. By then most of the companies should have decided what console they are going to spend most of their time developing for.

Food for thought: Within the first 2 weeks, the N-Gage topped 400,000 sales in the UK. I can't find launch-day/weekend figures, though.

Actually that number came about as a result of some number jigging by Nokia. What they actually said was that there were 400,000 N-Gages in the Uk, not sold, not in stores, but phyiscally in the country. They just said it in way that suggested that those were sales numbers.

I think what most people are getting at is that its probably a better situation to have demand higher than supply than the to have supply higher than demand. Though i do agree that the PS3 launch is not half as bad as most people would have you believe.
This is an extremely unfair comparison. Both the Wii and 360's sales were heavily limited by supply. Sony had 4 months to drum up huge supply for their Europe launch - this means that there are 165,000 people in the UK that actually want a PS3.
As somebody who works for GAME (we had over 50% of the UK allocation) I can say that while the numbers sold are great (due to the fantastic supply), the GAME head office isn't happy with how the launch has gone. They're of the opinion that if the Wii had shipped this many units, we'd have sold every one and we'd still be having a shortage now (our biggest store in the region got a Wii delivery on PS3 launch, and sold more Wiis than PS3s thanks to that shipment.)
I hate to piss on the Sony parade, but it sold that many because of the amount of consoles avaliable; plain and simple. The store I spend most of my working hours at still hasn't sold all it's consoles, has about 70 spare of 200, and that's on launch weekend. That's a £2 million/year grossing store - its not like it's a small store that wouldn't sell.
It seems to be the US launch all over again - record breaking, good numbers - but it was down to the hardcore getting their purchase out of the way. This won't sustain even in the slightest, as evidenced by stock.
Anyway; the official retail position given on today's company memo was: PS3 sales are good, but much lower than expectations - with Wii and 360 we would've sold these - push the console more.
What impresses me is they sold this many units yet out of all my gamer friends, hardcore and non hardcore, not one of them has bought a PS3. Nor have I heard of anyone by association (friends of friends, etc) who has bought one. Yet I know plenty that bought 360's and Wii's at launch.

I know one guy with a PS3. 'Course, I know zero guys with a Wii, but I at least know three people that want one.

again its worth remember that the Wii is still sold out pretty much across the entire UK. sure they're still having trouble meeting the demand but thats party because the demand is so high. they're flying off shelves they minute they get there, with many stores still filling(and taking) pre-orders. that almost 4 months since its launched here. its unlikely the PS3 will be in that situation come July.
Pretty much agree with what everyone else is saying here. If the Wii or 360 had shipped that many units in the first place, they would have sold out.
The lol, sony for me isn't being based on actual numbers. I knew last week, and still know now that it's going to do well at launch.
The lol, sony for me comes from actual consumer excitement. You didn't see the three-day lineups that you saw with the wii/ps3/360 before. Pretty much everyone who bought one picked it up the next day, instead.
What that tells you, is that people are buying them, but they're not enthusiastic about it. And in the long run, that is potentially a very bad thing.
Is this sold to consumers or sold to retailers? I know a lot of people who work in retail and their stores ordered alot of PS3s so that they wouldn't end up with another Wii scenario. As far as I'm aware, none of them have sold 75% of what they got.
Wait...even when it beats the previous big console's numbers in launch, it's not a good thing just because it has units left...? I am not following. What would be a good thing then?

Seriously, i understand the reasoning behind it, but when any other industry brings out a new product, having more than enough to meet demand and still breaking sales record is generally considered good planning. Here its considered a failure, and im not quite sure i can agree with that.

the number may not be 100% accurate but most(if not all) UK retailers pass on their sales figures for games/game hardware to chart track, which then releases it. its worth noting how ever that they do not give out numbers for software sales only hardware. they merely announce which games sold more, not by how many units.

How many retail stores do you think you could call and ask if that was your 9-5 job? Probably a lot.
Now say you survey 100 stores randomly located. You find that those stores sold on average about 75% of their allocations, with very few statistical outliers. Take the country's allocation (220,000) multiply by the average sell-through (75%) and you get an accurate statistical prediction of how many were actually sold (165,000). That number probably isn't off target by more than 5,000 I'd expect, which is statistically insignificant in this case.

If it was my nine to five job, I imagine I'd wrap the telephone cord around my neck after the sixty first call, but I guess for launch weekend Sony probably would have plenty of people checking these things.
Out of curiosity, why are people so worked up about all of the sales figures on the consoles... myself included?
I mean, I certainly have enough money where I could go out and get a PS3, and for those without the money, it should be irrelevant.
At this point, all three consoles have enough of a user base that none of them will be left in the cold:
Xbox with over 10 million.
Wii with over 6 million.
PS3 with 2.5-3 million.
So at this point, we've got a vibrant gaming ecosystem, with enough cool stuff for anyone that makes ANY choice.
Why is it then that we're "rubbernecking" the launches and the numbers? It's crazy!

I personally am not fond of having 3 competing companies. I would personally prefer just 2, as that would make exlusivity and whatnot easier on me. I don't like having to purchase 3 different expensive machines just so I can look at the entire wall of my gaming store.
